Trip Update 6-27-08

After picking the group up at the airport we soon hit the road and headed for the put in on the Salmon River to start the rafting section. By the time the first rapid crashed there were already a plethora of nicknames for multiple people such as Tater-tot (Tyler), G-man (Giles), and P-dawg (Peter B.). When we hit the river we started out on a gnarly rapid named Ruby that was supposedly the roughest rapid on the river due to the uncharacteristic high water volume of the river, but boy was there some gnarly stuff headed our way on the second day. Throughout the first day Anna, Tyler, Jack, Leader Peter, Ned, and Ann all joined the Salmon River swim team. For the first day on the River Jack and Tyler were the leaders of the day splitting up into two rafts. Tyler's was Team Alpha in large part due to G-man and P-dawg or Peter and Giles as they are known to some. When Jack's raft AKA the Humbarian Cheesecakers, due to some interesting choices on the name by Coates, hit a rapid one half of the boat feel in due to some of Will's "magic powers". Will made sure that Jack, Leader Peter and Ned all took a nice swim in the chilly waters. The next day we hit the biggest rapid on the river. Led by Ned and Anna the groups got to experience the wrath of "Bung hole" which had swells up to 25 feet. This was one intense rapid as all the people in the rafts had audible gasps at the size of what was coming at them. We hit the rapid right before we set for camp on White House beach. The whole group went for a hike up the canyon. Unfortunately the group had to split up into cook crew and non-cook crew. From the beach Jack, Ian, and Ann could see the non-cook crew lead by Hadley as just specks on the top of the massive mountain. But, those three made some delicious spaghetti that nestled very nicely into those exerted stomachs. The next day under the guidance of Campbell and Ian as leaders of the day the group made it to the last campsite where they relaxed, played some volleyball, wrestled in the sand, and had a pepper eating contest. It would be safe to say that what ensued was an uproarious and at times unsettlingly funny shenanigans. Jack was the winner indeed eating an entire raw Jalapeno and then eating twenty jalapeno pieces that were soaked in pepper juices. The group from here spent one last night on the Salmon before returning with a little sadness for leaving the river but a lot of stories to tell about the chaos that ensued and a lot of gusto heading into the climbing segment of the trip.
