Hey Moondance Families!
Day 12: Happy Birthday, Davis!!! 🎉🥳
We kicked off the morning the right way, storming Davis’s room with balloons and tunes to celebrate his birthday! We feasted at the breakfast buffet, Clare pounding some passion fruit, and Emma, Jack G, and Jack C ransacking the chocolate muffins. We headed to the airport, where the girls picked up some coloring books, grabbed snacks, and hit the plane. Always a comedy show flying with 12 teens without phones. Leslie and Emma worked hard on the coloring books, Clare and Jack C ran some cards, Beegee taught Davis some card games, and Nate demolished Jackson in ERS (and celebrated a little too loudly).
We got off the plane and hit the road toward the beach, stopping at a few gas stations along the way, playing some Wavelength with Jack C, Charlotte, James, Henry, Jackson, Beegee, and Davis, and belting some tunes the whole ride. We arrived at the beach, enjoyed a nice spaghetti dinner, and celebrated Davis’s birthday properly with a cheesecake and sparkling candles. We hit the beach after, feet in the sand, and closed the night with a moon-up led by Leslie and Jack C, capping things off with a round of Duck, Duck, Goose. Finished with a night pool session and got ready for our first full day at the beach!
Day 13: Everything is better at the beach!
We woke up bright and early and split into two groups, one hitting the waves for surfing and one tackling beach cleanup. Nate, Jack C, Henry, Davis, Leslie, Ansley, and Beegee were up first in the water. Jack C got up multiple times despite it being his first time surfing, Davis and Leslie were riding without the instructors in no time, and Beegee looked like an absolute pro on the waves. Clare, Jack G, Jackson, James, Lolly, Emma, and Charlotte followed up our surfing (and apparently they were the stronger surfing group, but Nate wants a revote). Charlotte got up on the first wave like a natural! Clare’s group had a friendly game of volleyball before going out for a swim! We swapped over, did some beach cleanup, and rode some waves before sitting down for a beachside lunch followed by some relaxing. Nate, Beegee, and James took down Henry, Jack G, and Jackson in volleyball before we made our way onto the boat for our ocean safari, where Jack C got some stellar dolphin footage, along with the rest of the group
Back on shore, Beegee, Jackson, Henry, and Nate ran some Spades while Clare, James, and Lolly soaked up the view. After a delicious dinner and dessert, we jumped into a fab game of Fish Bowl, where Leslie, Ansley, Beegee, Jack C, Henry, and Davis came away with the win. Henry and Ansley closed the night with a poolside moon-up, a star gaze to finish, and some great questions throughout. Ready for day 2 at the beach!
Day 14: Cooking, Crabs, and Sunset Sails!
Top of the morning- today we had a few brave souls wake up at sunrise to go on a run on the beach with Clare and Nate: shoutout Charlotte, Jack C, and Jackson! Post run, we awoke everyone up with some morning jams, and we fueled up on scrambled eggs before heading out to scuba for an ocean safari. Our driver, spotted a whale early into the drive, and we rushed to get in the water, but it swam off just as we jumped in. Lolly did manage to catch a glimpse of its tail, though! We cruised around some more and came across a fishing net. Davis helped the crew pull it into the boat, including a ton of crabs on the net, which Emma loved, and Jack G and Lolly were decidedly less enthusiastic about.
Back on land, we got ready for our cooking class with our guide! We started by cracking open some coconuts, with Charlotte, James, Jackson, and Henry going all in on the full coconut experience to reach the middle. We learned about Mozambique’s famous dessert, Matapa, and helped form some delicious rolls-shoutout to Leslie, Ansley, Emma, Lolly, Clare, Henry, Jackson, and James. We sat down for a huge feast: crabs, rice, grilled fish, fruit, and Matapa. It hit the spot!
We headed back to base before setting sail on a little sailboat through the inlet for our sunset cruise. With tunes going, a gentle breeze, and some end-of-trip energy in the air, it felt like an absolute fairy tale soaking up the Mozambique sun. Back at camp, we enjoyed some pasta dinner, got a little Connect 4 going with Clare, Beegee, Nate, Charlotte, Jackson, and James, then some Jenga and poker to top it all off, with James and Davis dominating the table. Beegee and Jackson closed out the night with a moon-up and a Pass the Pulse to wrap up a fabulous third day!
Day 15: Last day of Mozambique!
Good morning Mozambique! The sky was shining bright today as it was our last full day here in paradise. We opened with Nutella crepes before heading to the waves for round two of surfing. Clare, Beegee, Lolly, Ansley, Jack G, and Davis made up the first squad, all looking like pros out there. Nate, Henry, James, Jackson, Leslie, Emma, and Charlotte were up next, getting up multiple times and riding the waves all the way in. We headed back to scuba for another ocean safari. No whale shark this time, but we enjoyed swimming off the boat, and James and Davis wasted no time splashing Clare, Lolly, and Ansley. Back on shore, Clare, Jackson, Jack G, and James took down Henry, Nate, Charlotte, and Beegee in a heated volleyball match before we headed to the Mozambique market, where the kids showed off some shopping skills, picking up bracelets, t-shirts, and other goodies.
Back at home base, Davis, James, and Henry held it down at the card table while everyone else enjoyed some pool time. We took a few pictures on the beach to soak up the last Mozambique sunset before heading to dinner, blasting tunes on the short ride over. Japanese cuisine was on the menu, fun bucket hats were handed out, and sushi, noodles, and teriyaki made for a fab meal to cap off a fab trip. Back at camp, the leaders surprised everyone with dessert and an engraved whale shark keepsake, followed by a closing game of Family. We headed down to the beach for our final moon-up, opened the floor for each person to receive compliments, relived the funniest moments of the trip, and shared what we were each taking away. No better way to end such a fabulous experience!
Day 16: So long, farewell, SAF!!!
We woke up at the crack of dawn for our drive to the airport, lots of zzz’s to start before morning tunes kicked in, and the laughs started rolling as we revisited trip highlights. A gas station stop for some Appletizers was a must before arriving at the Vilankulos airport, where Clare, Charlotte, Leslie, Emma, Ansley, Lolly, Jackson, Henry, Davis, Jack G, and Jack C all grabbed some African shirts before boarding. James, Nate, Jack C, Beegee, and Jack G ran some hacky at the gate while we waited. More cards and sleep on the flight back to SAF before our final dinner at the airport: steaks, pizza, and pasta to close it all out.
We checked in, said our goodbyes strategically before handing the kids their phones and losing their attention for good. Despite Clare’s Irish roots, it was a long and well-deserved goodbye, complete with hacky sack, dancing to our favorite tunes, and cinnamon roll hugs all around.
WHAT A SQUAD! A trip for the ages, and no other group Clare and Nate would want to do it with. Thank you for sharing your kids with us for a few weeks; it’s a life-changing experience we won’t forget.
XOXO,
💖💕💓🫶

Hello Moondance Families!
Day 7: Out of Mabula, Onto Mongena!
We hit the road early and headed straight to the lions, who were enjoying a nice post-feast slumber after taking down a zebra. We got within a few feet, with Charlotte and Jack C being the closest to all three! We made a quick stop for hot cocoa and tea at a scenic lookout, soaking up the sun before heading back to camp for a beautiful breakfast spread: bacon, eggs, tomatoes, waffles, toast, yogurt, fruit, and a traditional South African breakfast of toast, meat sauce, and syrup. Interesting to say the least, but not bad at all!
Before hitting the road, we squeezed in some games. Beegee, Charlotte, James, Jackson, Jack G, and Henry ran some classic card games. Ansley and Davis played the longest Spit game yet, clocking in at over 45 minutes, and James gave Nate and Jack G a battle at the Spit table. We finished with Shake and Pop where Leslie, Emma, and Jackson shined with their on-beat moves at double the speed. On tour drive, Henry, Jack C, Lolly, Ansley, and Beegee curated some fabulous tunes on the queue sheet, with Clare and Jack C hitting some Pitch Perfect notes hard. We stopped at a grocery store where Nate and James nearly bought full cakes for under 4 USD, and Jack C treated the whole group to two bottles of kids sparkling cider. Successful run to say the least.
A little after 3 we arrived to our destination, dropped our bags, admired the baby zebra hanging out on the steps from the hotel lobby, and headed straight to our sunset boat cruise. Multiple hippos swimming, crocodiles tanning, and a gorgeous sunset. From there we walked into dinner and were immediately greeted by the sound of drums. We jumped into a full African drumming course with two teams battling it out. Henry and Emma captained the teams, and James, Charlotte, Leslie, and Jackson were called up front to show their moves as we all drummed along. SO COOL AND SO FUN, we felt completely immersed! After dancing around our chairs and learning a few drumming patterns, the sun was fully down and we feasted: steak, chicken kabobs, grilled veggies, rice, sausage, and beautiful rolls. Henry and Emma closed it out with a campfire moon-up, nailing every part, landing laughs on the silly question and getting genuine answers on the deep one.
Day 8: Give It Up for Service!
We woke up to a delicious breakfast and a view overlooking the lake. Jack C gave the group a full breakfast haul and rating on his spread, while Clare and Nate enjoyed fruit cup parfaits. We set off for service where we painted a church and adjacent buildings with primer and beautiful navy and white accents. Henry was active on every wall, Davis churned out the outer blue of the church, James was loving the yacht rock playlist, Lolly and Jack C kept the group energy high with a ton of singing, and Jackson and Charlotte were absolute beasts late in the afternoon, never wearing down and just kept painting.
While waiting for the local kids to get home from school, Ansley and Lolly tied in an epic Hacky Sack game, then we jumped into soccer with the kids. Charlotte dominated with her footwork, but could not stop Henry, Jack G, and Davis from taking the W. Back at the hotel, nice refreshments were awaiting us, while Charlotte, James, Nate, and Clare hit the sand volleyball courts. We headed out for a safari ride, spotted some lions, stopped for a sunset where Nate got smoked by Henry in a race, and on the way home found the animal Davis had been waiting for: a male kudu!
Dinner was a full cooking battle. Charlotte and James handled the chicken, Beegee and Ansley chopped veggies, and Henry stirred all of the spices in like a pro. Lolly locked in on the other team, helping them win on presentation and cleanliness for the victory. Leslie and Emma were showing off their knife skills with the veggies. Davis was a huge fan and help with the seasonings- could have been the secret ingredient that won team B the victory haha. We finished with a bonfire moon-up led by Topher and Ansley who had great questions!
Day 9: Slaying Service!
We fueled up with an all you can eat breakfast feast: eggs, waffles, and sausage, then got straight to work. Leslie and Ansley painted the outside of the house all day, Lolly and Davis handled touch-ups inside the church, and Jack C and Emma painted well on the church wall. Nate, James, Jack C, and Jackson played some Hacky Sack in the street in between, all getting their touch back. Back at camp we ran a volleyball game with Clare, James, Jackson, Jack G, Lolly, Beegee, and Leslie taking the W in a nail-biter 27-25 game!
We headed out for a night safari where we spotted some cheetahs and enjoyed a sunset with a round of Zip Zap Zop, with Clare, James, Lolly, and Clare running the show. Back at the restaurant for dinner, Charlotte taught a card trick, and Nate, Jackson, and James ran the table through Black Magic as we enjoyed steak and pasta. Jackson and Charlotte closed the night with a moon-up, opening with a great game of Imposter and ending with a big cinnamon group hug.
Day 10: Night at the Bush!
Henry was first to the breakfast buffet and rightfully so, it might have been one of the best breakfast buffets witnessed on this trip. We geared up for our last day of service with Ansley and Leslie back at the rollers working hard, and Beegee helping touch up a wall with some of the local painters. We fueled up on chicken wraps before finishing with an epic soccer game with kids from the village, playing Hard Knock Life and Work by Rihanna to keep the energy high, with Jack C and Clare putting on the moves. James put on a full performance with multiple assists and goals; Davis was an elite keeper; Charlotte brought sweet ball-handling skills; Emma and Jackson played lockdown defense; Clare and Nate both scored; and Jack G put on the moves at striker.
We headed back to camp to prep for a big night! We set off on our bush walk and surprised the kids with an overnight stay in the bush! We soaked up some rhinos walking by and sat down for the final sunset. Dining on lasagna in the bush, playing a round of Mafia where James, Lolly, Beegee, Leslie, and Davis stole the show, and then finishing off with cocoa and s’mores, we all had the best evening! James and Lolly led a fabulous moon-up packed with games, great questions, and a star gaze to wrap it all up. Everyone grabbed their sleeping bags, got as cozy as possible, and fell asleep under the stars, though both leaders got called out in the morning for snoring.
Day 11: City life, City lodge
We woke up early from our sleep out in the bush, and apparently the whole group slept right through some lion roars in the night! A breakfast buffet, a few naps, showers, and some packing, we were off from our camp back into the city. Lots of zzz’s in the car, but the energy picked right back up when LODs Emma and Davis announced a trip to the mall!
We stopped at Nando’s, a classic South African lunch spot, where Nate, Jackson, and Henry battled it out in a hot sauce competition. Jackson took home the title. Next up, laser tag! Full circle from sleeping in the bush to laser tag, but an incredibly fun switch up. Clare took first place (still under review), with Jack C close behind at 3rd, Davis at 4th, Nate at 5th, Jackson at 7th, and James at 8th representing Moondance proud. We continued the mall trip with some exploring, Davis and Beegee picked up some solid South African bucket hats, and Henry grabbed his classic refrigerator magnet. We also stopped for some face paint where Emma, Leslie, Ansley, Lolly, Davis, and Jack G enjoyed some spider main face paint.
Dinner was at an Asian spot where Nate taught the table Jacob’s Ladder, and despite a close series, Nate, Clare, Lolly, Emma, Jack G, and Henry took the W, scoring three unanswered to close it out. We finished with well-deserved ice cream before our drivers took us back to the city hotel. We wrapped the day with a moon-up outside, ending with a fan favorite round of Pookie where James, Ansley, Jackson, Davis, Clare, Jack C, and Beegee ran away with it. Big day tomorrow, Davis turns 17 and we are all pumped for the Mozambique flight! The waves are calling us, got to go! Thank you for following and talk to you soon xoxo!

HEY SAF-A !!!
We are so pumped to meet and greet you all at the Johannesburg airport! Beegee and Lolly were the first ones to meet us outside the door of customs, and just like that, the adventure began! The whole crew grabbed our bags and made our way over to our home for the night: City Lodge. We indulged in some comfort food: pizza! Jackson’s geography knowledge got put to the test, we played the name game (shoutout to Jack G for going 100% on everyone’s name AND hometown), and the leaders even tried to spice things up with a round of non-fun facts. After a long travel day, we hit the hay, so stoked for what lies ahead. Thank you for tuning in as we adventure along SAF!!
On the Road to Mabula
We woke up at the city hotel, fueled up at breakfast, shoutout to Charlotte and Nate for loving the omelet station, and were treated to a beautiful South African song greeting from the Jetlag Jammers. What a way to start the morning! We hit the road toward Mabula and our driver nicknamed Doctor made a pit stop at a gas station where Henry and Emma hooked the whole crew up with a bag of Nik Naks. A South African rite of passage, officially complete.
We were greeted at Mabula Game Reserve with sparkling orange juice, settled in, and jumped into some imposter and wavelength before our first game drive. And what a drive it was, crocodiles, giraffes, a baby zebra, and one crew even got an up-close look at some baby hippos. Dinner brought more good vibes with get-to-know-you games where we learned that Jack has not one, but two sets of triplets in his family. We wrapped the night with hot cocoa, a bonfire moon-up led by Nate and Clare, and some real talk about why everyone signed up and what they’re hoping to get out of this trip. Heated beds on, lights out!
Early Mornings and Big Cats
Still dark out, but nobody complained, we grabbed our tea, coffee, and hot cocoa and hit the dirt road. It didn’t take long before we found two cheetahs walking right down the road. They stopped, laid down in front of us (and, well, took care of some other business) as we snapped some flicks and admired these beasts. From there, we raced back across the reserve to catch the three lions, three brothers soaking up the sun as we got a full lesson on the path to kingship. Safe to say, a group Lion King and Planet Earth viewing session is now officially on the itinerary.
Back at camp, we fueled up on veggie and steak wraps before free time took over. James and Leslie ran the spike ball court, Clare, Nate, James, Jackson, Davis, Jack, and Henry got a hacky sack circle going up front, and Leslie introduced the group to “Family,” a group game we played multiple times with Lolly and Jack C leading the charge. Dinner was a spread of steak, chicken, and pasta, and we closed out the night with a moon-up led by James and Beegee. Best question of the night: if you could master any skill, what would it be? We went to bed under the most beautiful, clear South African sky pumped for day 5!
Baby Cheetahs and Night Elephants
Early wake-up, and Nate and Davis wasted no time, straight into a polar plunge at 36 degrees outside. We fueled up on yogurt, granola, and fruit before heading out to feed the rhinos, hopping into the back of a pickup truck to toss barrel after barrel of grass. Clare, Topher, Lolly, and Beegee were first up helping to feed a baby rhino, while Charlotte, Ansley, Leslie, Jack, Jackson, and Henry got hands-on with the buffaloes, which as we learned are actually the most dangerous of the Big 5 (rhino, leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo). Jack was thrilled to spot some monitor lizards, and James casually mentioned he’s saving up to buy a giraffe as a pet. Completely reasonable.
Lunch was fabulous, chicken kabobs on an overlook spot in the South African sun. Back at camp, Leslie and Henry took over the spike ball court, and Davis, Emma, Ansley, and Jackson battled, with Davis coming home with the hacky sack championship.
Then came the drive of the trip. Our guide, Morneas took a shortcut and stumbled upon baby cheetahs, just a few weeks old. Both guides had never seen baby cheetahs in the wild, and you could feel the energy in the vehicle. These cheetahs walked right past the car. Unreal!!! We also spotted baby giraffes, buffalo, baboons, some wild turkeys, and plenty more before heading back for our night ride, where we watched elephants absolutely uproot trees in the dark and learned their trunks have over 14,000 muscles. We caught a sunset stop along the way, learned and played a South African spitting game (definitely meant for the bush) after taking some sunset pictures, mixed up the dinner seating for some fresh conversations, and capped the whole night off with a bonfire moon-up led by Leslie and Davis & a game of “family” to wrap it up. What a day. What a night.
RHINO day!
Clare and Nate ran throughout the camp, waking the kids up to “Ribs” by Lorde (which Clare received as a celebrity look-alike from the kids; Nate’s still waiting for a good one). We gathered for hot cocoa and biscuits, having grown to love our early morning tea time all together. We hopped onto the safari buggies as the sunrise shone on our faces and off we went. On our first stop, we saw wild hunting dogs, various birds, giraffes, and a crocodile. Next, we ate breakfast as we watched hippos graze across a lake, get up, and tan in the sun SO COOL!!!
We headed back to camp where we played various games, spoons, hacky sack, and spikeball. Davis beat out our two South African guides in spoons (USA holding strong). After lunch the card table got serious. Charlotte led a game of Spades, James, Ansley, and Lolly were running a team in Spit, Jackson led a game of Egyptian Rat Slap (and absolutely dominated), and Beegee taught the crew Casino. We had quite the time with all the games going on at once, and it looked like a casino in our little lounge area. We kept the games going with some Shake and Pop, where Emma and Leslie showed off some dance moves.
Then Nate and Clare pulled off a solid prank, leading the group to believe we were headed for a bird-sighting when, in reality, a veterinarian and the game reserve crew took us to witness a rhino darting experience firsthand! Absolutely unbelievable! Charlotte and Jackson led wound cleaning, Jack G and Henry helped move the rhino away from the thorn bush, Henry stepped up for vaccines, Davis handled taking samples, and Lolly cut the ears to help tag and label the baby rhinos. And all of us were hands-on, helping the vets as well. It was AWESOME, truly a life-changing experience where we all felt intertwined and part of the safari vet team!
We returned to camp for more cards before dinner. Jack C, Beegee, and Clare threw a full karaoke dance party at sunset. We played our favorite game of Family before sitting down to the final feast at Mabula, and what a feast it was: lamb chops, sausage, oxtail, salad, pasta salad, potatoes, polenta, and chocolate cake. We finished around the campfire one last time for moon-up, tried to chase down a porcupine, closed it out with a spit tournament, and then hit the hay. Full day yet again, excited to do it all again!
