Hi families and friends! We can’t believe our trip has already come to an end, but man, what an incredible two weeks we just had. We truly can’t be more grateful for all of the laughs, memories and friendships we made in Slovenia with your kids. Since we last updated you, we’ve done a lot and we want to tell you about it!
On Wednesday morning, we woke up to the bright sun and gathered for a delicious breakfast spread of cream cheese danishes, apples, muesli, homemade bread, ham and cheese. Our LOD’s Graham and Aubrey led us in morning huddle with an inspiring quote. We hopped in the vans and were off to Croatia! On the way, we made a pit stop in Slovenia’s Tuscany region, and we climbed up a tower to see rolling hills covered with vineyards and classic Tuscany- style buildings with red clay roofs. Our next stop was a Slovenian cooking class! Cole, Aubrey, Emily and Graysen peeled and cut peaches and potatoes on a lovely patio shaded by lemon trees and vines. Fritz, Isaiah and Gigi cheffed up homemade pasta, learning how to use a pasta machine to roll out and cut the dough into ribbons of pasta. Merris and Tyson made a beautiful peach pie with the peaches prepped by Emily and Aubrey. Harrison grated zucchini and carrots for veggie fritters, while Graham and Ava Jane slow
-cooked turkey in brown butter. The whole group worked together preparing an incredible meal of vegetable soup, pasta with tomato sauce and pancetta, turkey with potatoes and veggie fritters, and peach pie for dessert. Stuffed to the brim, we got back in vans to Pula, Croatia, where everyone fell into a post-lunch slumber. We arrived at our campsite, and a group of us learned a new card game while Harrison, Fritz, Graysen, and Isaiah played basketball. Dinner was delicious and we finished our meals with chocolate pancakes for dessert. Yum! At Moonup, Aubrey and Graham asked the group “how do you want to be remembered” and we closed out playing guitar and singing on the beach overlooking the Adriatic Sea. We went to sleep in our cozy tents feeling grateful for another day!
We woke Thursday morning to the warm and bright sun. At breakfast, Gigi and Aubrey concocted a new group favorite treat- Nutella on bread topped with coco puffs. A chocolate lover’s dream! Bugy and Jaka drove us to the beach to meet our guides for sea kayaking. Cole and Aubrey absolutely crushed it, paddling effortlessly ahead of the group. We kayaked for an hour around the coastline of Premantura and arrived at a rocky cove with deep blue water. Our guide gave us snorkel masks so we could explore the water below. We swam into a cave and were amazed by all the fish and rock structures beneath the surface of the water. Gigi and Isaiah kept swimming while the rest of the group took a break to admire the cave walls. Next, we all climbed up a big rock and jumped into the water, Graysen leading the charge. Everyone in the group jumped off this high rock showing such courage and eagerness to step out of their comfort zones. We paddled back all together to return our kayaks and drove to lunch at Istria Farm, where we saw long horn bulls. The group experimented with Istrian dishes and fresh sea food. We drove to our next activity and surprised the kids with an afternoon at Aqualand, an inflatable obstacle course on water. We played a group game of tag, with Fritz and Cole nimbly dodging the obstacles. Ava Jane, Gigi and Graham took a break from tag to watch some epic wipe outs from their friends on the course. We had such a blast all afternoon and laughed till our stomachs hurt as we clumsily slipped and slid all over the course. Wiped from our awesome day playing in the sun, we went back to camp to shower and get ready for dinner. We drove into the city of Pula, and Jaka walked us around the Pula Arena, a Roman coliseum built between 27 and 68 AD known famously for being the most intact coliseum in the world with four towers still standing to this day. After learning the history of this cool town, we sat down for dinner at an Istrian restaurant and devoured Neapolitan style pizzas, burgers, and homemade pasta. We enjoyed gelato at a local gelateria nearby, then headed back to our campsite. Cole and Graysen led us in a wonderful moonup on the beach watching the sunset, asking us to recall a memory that we never want to forget. We played guitar and sang along on the beach and watched the stars, soaking in our penultimate moonup together.
And then somehow, it was our last day!! Feeling sad for the goodbyes to come but immensely grateful for our time all together, we circled up for morning huddle with Emily and Harrison who spoke about the importance of being yourself and not being afraid to take risks. Everyone by now has caught onto the Nutella bread with coco puffs, which filled the kids up before our drive to the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana! We listened to some Noah Kahan and Ella Langley requested by Merris and Tyson, and took some power naps in the car. By lunchtime we were in Ljubljana, where we said some sad goodbyes to our guides Bugy and Jaka who were such an important part of our group. We dropped our bags off at our hostel, and soon we were eating pizza and pasta at a delicious pizzeria. We spent the next few hours walking around and exploring this cool city, and some of us bought some souvenirs to take back home. Fritz found a cool retro USA long sleeve tee, and Harrison and Graham bought Team Slovenia soccer jerseys. Ava Jane, Cole and Graham helped Tyson pick out a very Euro-style fit to wear to dinner. We stopped for frozen yogurt which was a fan favorite- we could tell by everyone finishing theirs within 2 minutes! We went back to the hostel to start packing and getting ready for our banquet dinner. We bought notebooks for every student so we could write personal ‘nugs’ to each other to take home with us, so we spent some time writing thoughtful notes to each other and recalling our wonderful memories together. We then got all dressed up and headed back into town to explore Ljubljana more. We sat down for dinner at a bistro right next to the river running through Ljubljana. Harrison and Cole ordered one last meal of goulash with gnocchi, and we said cheers to an unforgettable two weeks! Of course, we had to hit one more gelateria before heading back to the states, where Emily and Aubrey got bright blue gelato. We all bought matching Slovenija shirts and took pictures together to capture our last moments in between laughing at our silly new looks. We made it back to our hostel where we listened to music and finished packing before sitting down for Moonup one final time. At Moonup, the nug jug seriously could have gone on forever! Emily and Harrison prompted us to recall our favorite memories together, and tell about the time on the trip where we laughed the hardest (it was very hard to pick just one!). Gigi and Tyson went back and forth recalling funny moments which had us all laughing. We rounded off the night playing guitar and singing together one last time.
We (Luke and Claire) could not be more grateful for these kids and their impact on our lives these past two weeks. They each shined in unique ways throughout the trip and challenged each other to step out of their comfort zones and try new things. Thank you to all of the families reading this who shared your children with us, we will miss them dearly!
Signing off one last time with so much love!
Luke and Claire ❤️

Živjo from Slovenia 1A! We have made it out of the mountains and into the beautiful Soča Valley since we last updated you all, and we have so much to share!
On our first day of trekking, our LODs Emily and Tyson valiantly led us up into the Julien Alps. We began near Bohinj and walked our way up to our first stop- a lovely mountain hut where we fueled up with apple pie and a beautiful view of a mountain meadow covered in wildflowers. Graham and Graysen helped us polish off the group’s leftover apple pie- it was so delicious! Back on the trails Cole, Graysen, and Harrison asked each other “table questions” (fun icebreaker questions) on the trail while Fritz enjoyed getting to know our guide Jaka better. Aubrey, Emily, and Ava Jane crushed the day, hiking at the front of the group with a positive attitude the whole time. We made it to a mountain hut that we would call home for the night, and we were served delicious traditional Slovenian meal of goulash with polenta. After lunch, we settled into our rooms and got ready for an afternoon hike. Bugy and Jaka led us to Kidney Lake, one of the lakes in the seven lakes region, where we spotted adorable marmots running around the remaining melting snow. Back at the hut, we tried some Slovenian snacks and desserts, played cards, and made friendship bracelets… Isaiah now refers to his friendship bracelet making as his “Flow state” as he locks in and crafts these nearly perfect bracelets. A thunderstorm rolled through in the afternoon, so we gathered in the boys’ bunk room and played a game of Mafia all together. For dinner, we ate another great Slovenian meal- some had sausage and sauerkraut while others had macaroni noodles with veggies, or bean stew- shoutout Tyson and Fritz for trying something new! We moved on to Moonup, led by our LODs Tyson and Emily overlooking an incredible view of the mountains and an alpine lake, and we wrapped up Moonup by acting out mountain goats. Before bed, Claire played guitar with Emily, Aubrey, Graysen and Cole as the sun set. Then it was bedtime!
Before another day of trekking began, our mountain hut hosts graciously provided scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast. Fritz and Graysen tested their palates by smearing chicken pâté on their toast for some early morning protein. We set off again for another beautiful day in the Julian Alps, where we hiked through rolling hills and beautiful forestry. Our LODs Merris and Graham kept the group energized from the front and back of the line, and trail talks were active once again with Graham and Harrison detailing their past travel history. Just three hours after setting off at brisk trekking pace, we arrived at our next hut to a lunch of penne pasta with bolognese sauce and a beautiful Alpine view to pair. During free time, Fritz and Graysen tried their hand in something new once again, but this time it was watercolor painting. All the while, bracelet making ensued with Isaiah and Aubrey leading the charge. Once everyone had a chance for rest, we were back on our feet once again for a quick hike to another hut for a treat of homemade lemon-lime tea and cinnamon rolls! Isiah, Graysen, and Harrison enjoyed the views after finishing their snack and we all strolled back to our hut for an activity: the NOLS Leadership Grid! The kids each placed themselves somewhere along the grid to get a better idea of their leadership style and information processing. For dinner, most of the group ate Kranjska sausage with fries, but Tyson took a risk on the mushroom soup with fries. We enjoyed our dinner, like lunch, in the beautiful Alpine scenery, and followed it with a long Moonup and several hours of talking before bed.
On Day 7, we enjoyed breakfast at our hut, which included coco puffs! Gigi and Tyson were super excited. Our LODs Cole and Fritz led us in morning huddle, then hyped us up for the day ahead of trekking. With a couple of miles behind us, we found WWII bunkers in the side of a mountain. We explored the dark tunnels as a group with headlights on and imagined being soldiers 80+ years ago- so wild. Isaiah and Graysen were especially curious when we stumbled upon the Italian army’s barracks in a mountain meadow. We made it to our next hut by lunchtime, where we enjoyed a lunch of pasta with bolognese again, a classic crowd pleaser. Feeling satisfied with our lunches, we settled into our bunk rooms. In the afternoon, we walked to a dairy farm to learn about farming in these mountains and the cheese making process. There, we met a Slovenian woman who lives at the hut in the summer months and makes cheese from her cows and goats to sell to hikers passing by. We even got to pet her cows and donkey, which was a highlight for Isaiah and Tyson. Our guides led us on a short walk to Krnska Jezero, or Krnska Lake. Bugy led us in a five minute meditation where we observed the stillness and nature around us, which the kids loved. Back at the hut, we got to try Slovenian dumplings with blueberry and cottage cheese inside. Ava Jane especially loved these! At dinner, we also got the chance to try buckwheat hash with sour milk- Gigi and Tyson were the first brave taste testers. We finished dinner with pudding topped with whipped cream and strawberry sauce, then headed to Moonup. After Moonup, we played another round of Mafia then went to bed.
Before our last day of trekking, our group ate a filling breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast, and cereal. Graysen and Isaiah stretched their minds early in the day with a game of chess over breakfast. Graysen and Aubrey led our Morning Huddle before our downhill hike into civilization, in which we spent 2 hours on the trail. After arriving at the end of the trail, Jaka guided us through a meditation where we immersed ourselves in the stillness of nature and reflected on our trekking experience – a well deserved moment of peace. We hopped back in the vans and found a burger and pizza restaurant, where no crumbs were left behind. Following lunch, we arrived at our campsite in Soća Valley and immediately changed into swimsuits to take a dip in the Soča River, even though the water’s temperature was a chilly 55°. However, that did not hold anyone back from full submersion, especially the girls, who all dunked their heads at the same time. Harrison clocked the most time in the river, and Tyson and Isaiah found the perfect skipping rock in a nearby pool of water. Once we dried off and made our way back to camp, Tyson and Gigi started a game of hacky-sack, and Cole and Graysen started a game of volleyball. All the while, Aubrey and Merris were teaching Graham how to make bracelets using string and a Nalgene bottle. While bracelet-making was underway, Fritz, Isaiah, Harrison, and Graysen played keep-away soccer. For dinner, we feasted on mac and cheese with a side of cabbage salad, and topped it all off with some delicious apple strudel. Moonup soon followed, where we shared which celebrity we would bring with us on the trip, and we ended the night with guitar playing and singing.
This morning we woke up in our cozy tents to a sunny day in the Soča valley, and Graysen’s 17th birthday!! At breakfast we all got birthday glasses to wear and ate delicious banana oatmeal and bread with marmalade. We packed into the vans and drove down the road to meet our guides to go canyoneering. We gathered up our gear and started hiking upriver up and over the canyon walls. Tyson opted for a cold plunge at the start! We suited up in wet suits and harnesses, and jumped into the water. For the next two hours, we would be hopping in and out of deep blue pools of water, dodging canyon walls and sliding down slippery curvy rocks. It was the coolest thing we’ve all ever done!! Cole and Harrison crushed it at the front of the group, bravely jumping off rocks into the water. Gigi and Isaiah laughed their way down the final drop into the water, enjoying every second. It was such a cool experience! Afterwards, we rode back to camp where we enjoyed Slovenian stew with polenta and a delicious Greek salad with cucumbers, tomatoes and feta. Then, our guides drove us to another swimming hole where we paddled around in another gorgeous emerald green river. Aubrey, Emily and Merris sun bathed on the warm rocks in between plunging in the water. We headed back to camp and threw an ice cream party for Graysen’s birthday! We devoured our ice cream and snacked on veggies and fruit as well, then took to games. Graysen, Harrison, Fritz, Cole, Tyson and Ava Jane played ultimate frisbee with Luke and Claire. Fritz scored two points and Tyson scored one too! The rest of the group hung out, tirelessly working on their friendship bracelets. We rounded up for a dinner of chicken Caesar salad wraps and fries, which we all devoured. We all sang Happy Birthday to Graysen as we brought out his birthday cake, which was so delicious. We played some games and spent time together before Moonup, where Graysen got a birthday card and birthday gift of Slovenian chocolate bars. Tyson and Ava Jane led us in Moonup, and we all got to tell Graysen what we love about him when we opened a Nug Jug just for him! After Moonup, we played some more music and another round of Mafia before going to bed. It was so fun to celebrate Graysen all day for his 17th birthday!
This morning we woke up and got ready for another day in Bovec, fueling ourselves with fried eggs and homemade toast. Gigi and Isaiah hyped us up for the day during morning huddle. We headed down the road to meet our guides for our final activity here in the Soča Valley- rafting! Back on the emerald green Soča River, this time on rafts, we paddled through class III and IV rapids. We got to jump off a giant rock into a deep pool of water, and Graysen eagerly went first. Our guides set up a raft slide for us, turning one of the rafts upside down so we could slide on our bellies into the water. Gigi and Graham caught air bouncing off the raft into the water! Nearing the end of the river, we got to hop in and float lazy river style in the freezing cold water- so refreshing in the hot sun. We met back up at camp for a delicious lunch of rice with carrots, beans, potatoes and sausage with incredibly fluffy focaccia bread on the side. The group gathered up to walk back to the riverside beach where we swam and sunbathed, jamming out to great tunes suggested by Harrison and Isaiah. We could’ve stayed there all day. This group just loves to be around each other no matter the activity! We waited out a short summer thunderstorm listening to music and making bracelets, then it was time to prep our barbecue dinner! Ava Jane helped make the salad with Aubrey and Emily, and Tyson and Gigi chopped vegetables to grill. Meanwhile, Fritz and Isaiah helped Bugy and Jaka grill sausages, chicken, and cevapi (classic Slovenian grilled meat). Once everything was prepared, we loaded up our plates and ate- it was so delicious, no leftovers here! Graysen, Cole and Ava Jane selflessly helped clean up before we roasted marshmallows for s’mores by a campfire. After, we all played an intense game of volleyball while Aubrey, Ava Jane and Emily came up with an impressive cheer to keep us motivated. Harrison and Graysen threw some impressive shots at the net. We gathered for Moonup where Gigi and Isaiah led us in a discussion about what we would tell our younger selves if we could go back in time. We played another game of Calibra- our new favorite dance game- which Graham, Cole and Harrison won, then topped the night off with a game of Mafia. Today was just another amazing day.
We are so grateful for all of you reading this for sharing your kids with us! We have been having the best time, and our days are FULL of laughs and incredible experiences. We’re so sad to only have a few days left, but we are pumped for the activities we have in store!
With love,
Luke and Claire

“Dobrodan” – or “good day” – from beautiful Slovenia! We are so thrilled that our long-awaited trip has finally begun – and what a start it has been! Everyone arrived safe and sound in Venice, where we enjoyed a quick breakfast of chocolate croissants and met our Slovenian outfitters Bugy and Jaka, who will be working with us these next two weeks! The scenic drive from Venice was broken up by lunch near a lake in Kranska Gora. There, we gathered around the Goat Horn statue for our first group photo. That afternoon, we arrived at our first hostel in Lake Bohinj! Graham, Graysen, Harrison, Isaiah, Fritz, and Cole quickly formed a game of hacky-sack with Claire and Luke. Emily generously shared her friendship string with Merris, Aubrey, and Ava Jane who started making bracelets. We went into the adorable town of Bohinj for dinner at the local pizzeria, where Harrison and Graysen impressively almost finished their giant personal pizzas. Back at our hostel, Luke and Claire led our group’s first Moonup on a beautiful beach overlooking Lake Bohinj. Each student spoke so genuinely about how they want to grow in these next two weeks, showing us what a strong group of leaders we have! Gigi and Harrison were chosen to be Leaders of the Day (LODs) for the following day due to their uplifting spirits and expedition behavior. We closed out the day playing “Wagon Wheel” on the guitar and harmonica, and went to sleep in our cozy hostel rooms.
On Day 3, Tyson, Isaiah, Cole, Harrison and Claire eagerly jumped in the lake for a morning cold plunge to start out the trip strong! We then met the group at breakfast for delicious homemade bread, meats and cheeses, cereal, and fruit- our first delicious European-style breakfast. Fueled and ready for the day, LOD’s Gigi and Harrison led us in our morning huddle, hyping up the rest of the group for today’s activities. We hopped in vans with our guides, and headed to Zgornja Sorica for a beautiful morning hike. All 12 kids powered up the hill, bright with green grass and wildflowers. We reached the ridgeline and saw an incredible view of the Slovenian Julien Alps, Mount Triglav (the highest peak in Slovenia), and the Austrian Alps- insane!! On the hike, the group bravely explored historic World War II bunkers on top of a mountain. We also came upon a herd of sheep and their shepherd, and Graysen and Graham were approached by a friendly ewe and her baby. At lunch, the group tried veal paté for an appetizer, a new delight that Fritz and Gigi enjoyed, and Cole displayed her talent for the Rubik’s cube. In the afternoon, we visited Bled Island via rowboats, which were steadily rowed by Cole, Tyson, Graysen, Isaiah and Graham. This island is the only island in Slovenia – and Slovenians are very proud of it! – found in the middle of Lake Bled and home to a beautiful church and a delicious gelato shop… where we stopped for some of the most delicious gelato we’ve ever had! We spent the rest of the afternoon into the evening on an idyllic grassy beach. Ava Jane and Merris jumped off the dock while Harrison and Isaiah waded in the water. For dinner, we lounged on the beach for a poké bowl picnic before making our way back to Bohinj. The kids had a blast playing volleyball, ping pong, and cards back at the hostel, then Gigi and Harrison gathered us up for Moonup. They asked the group to tell about an influential person in their life, and it was so wonderful to hear more about the important people that made them who they are today! Following Moonup, Emily serenaded the group with a few tunes singing and playing guitar to cap off our incredible first full day.
On Day 4, the group had the option to sleep in or get an active start on the day by walking, running, and/or cold plunging. Graysen, Tyson, Graham, Cole, Harrison, and Isaiah went for a light jog that turned into an all-out sprint for the finish, while Fritz, Merris, and Gigi took a leisurely stroll. Afterwards, the runners plunged into the chilly Lake Bohinj to kickstart the day. Following breakfast, Isaiah and Ava Jane enthusiastically led the group in today’s morning huddle, inspiring the group with Isaiah’s quote “You can’t add years to your life but you can add life to your years”. We made our way to our first activity of the day – rock climbing! Tyson and Emily took to the wall first, and everybody eventually scaled the rock’s face. After a few hours of climbing, we enjoyed pizza, pasta, and salads before heading back to our hostel for some free time, where the group partook in a game of charades! Next, everyone met at the lake for an afternoon of paddleboarding on Lake Bohinj. Aubrey, Merris, and Emily were the first to make it across the lake, where we paddled around on our boards and swam in the chilly water. Isaiah and Graysen showed us the true meaning of speed when they combined forces on one board. The group then made their way back to shore where Jaka and Bugy announced that our trekking trip starts tomorrow! We spent the next hour preparing our bags for this spectacular section of our trip.
For dinner, we went to Foksner in the town of Bohinj and gathered on their outdoor patio to enjoy a delicious meal of burgers and onion rings. Harrison branched out, ordering the Kimchi burger, which looked amazing. Back at our hostel, Ava Jane and Isaiah led the group in Moonup, where we discussed which super hero we would want to be for a day for the unserious question and our biggest fears for the “thinker” question. The Nug Jug could have gone on forever because there were so many awesome moments of our day! Alas, it was bed time, and the kids snuggled into their bunks for one last night in Bohinj.
Over the next few days, we will be completing our trekking section in the Julian Alps, where we will discover some of the best that Slovenia has to offer and challenge ourselves all the while. Before we go, we wanted to express how wonderful it has been to hang out with your kids thus far and the excitement we have for the rest of the trip! Thank you for sharing them with us!
Best wishes,
Claire and Luke
