It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the final section of our South African adventure! After an unforgettable safari, we packed up and made our way to our last destination at Mongena. The excitement never slowed down as we settled into a beautiful new camp surrounded by wildlife, ready to spend our final days serving a local community, exploring even more of the bush, and soaking up every last moment together.
As we drove into camp, everyone grabbed their cameras as zebras wandered through the property and monkeys played just outside our tents. After dropping off our bags, we headed straight to the water for a sunset boat cruise, and the sky did not disappoint, all pinks and oranges stretching out over the whole horizon. Cora was right in the thick of it, camera up, determined not to miss a single frame. Somewhere along the way, the whole group also fell hard for South Africa’s beloved Grapetiser, and Annie S. quickly became its number one fan, sipping it while watching the sunset. That night, after dinner, we gathered for a drum circle, split into two competing teams, and Teddie ran the show, the loudest and most energetic person in camp by far, impossible not to follow her lead. By the time we called it a night, everyone had danced, laughed, and cheered themselves out.
The next morning, we swapped safari vehicles for paint rollers and headed to a nearby village to help repaint the local church. Everyone worked hard, but a few kids really made it their own. Maddie turned out to be a natural with a brush, taking her time on every corner while still somehow managing to chat about her entire life story. She was easily one of the best people to work with all day. Cora kept the same eye for detail she’d shown behind the camera the night before, and Harper quietly put in solid work alongside everyone else, giving no hint yet of the other talent he’d reveal later that day.
Despite the fun we had while painting, the best part of those village mornings was always the kids. Within minutes, the local children had folded our whole group into their games and decided we should all just become part of their families. West happily took on the role of “mom” to a little girl named Olia, while Annie S. became “mom” in another family with Ona. Miles was incredible with the kids, the kind of guy the younger boys looked up to and wanted to be around all day. None of it needed translation. Bracelets went back and forth, piggyback rides never seemed to stop, and by the time we had to leave, the kids didn’t want to let us go. Annie F.‘s quiet, gentle way with people made her an instant favorite among the youngest ones, who trailed after her all morning. And somewhere in between, West became the unofficial camp hairstylist, braiding hair for pretty much every girl in our group over the course of the trip.
After lunch, the paintbrushes came out, and a soccer ball went in, and what started as a casual street game turned competitive fast. Carys was the clear star, scoring goal after goal while making sure the local kids got just as much time with the ball as we did. Harper casually mentioned he’d played soccer for seven years right before proving it, and the plays kept coming, leaving all of us wondering why he’d waited so long to bring that up. Owen threw himself into every match with everything he had, and honestly kept the whole group laughing while he did it. Soccer clearly became one of his favorite parts of the trip. Emily held it down on defense the whole game (not goalie, for the record, despite many accusations from the other team!).
Back at camp, we had just enough time to freshen up before another golden hour safari drive, where the conversations in the vehicle ended up being just as good as the animals we spotted. Kate’s infectious enthusiasm made every drive even more fun, and it seemed like everyone naturally gravitated toward her, eager to join whatever conversation she had started. That evening, we split into teams for a South African cooking competition, and Jane went full head chef mode. She knew exactly how to get the chicken right and steered her team to a well-earned win, though the debate over who really deserved the trophy is probably still going. We ended the night with Moonup under the stars, tired in the best way and already looking forward to doing it all again.
The next few days settled into a rhythm none of us really wanted to end. Each morning we were back at the church, watching it come together one coat of paint at a time, and each afternoon we were back in the village with the kids, picking games and friendships right back up where we’d left them the day before. The soccer only got more fun. Carys kept finding the back of the net, Harper kept making it look effortless, and Owen kept everyone loose with his energy and his jokes, on the sidelines and on the field. Back at camp, free time became one of the best parts of the day. Some people watched the wildlife wander by, others just talked, and there was genuinely never a dull moment with this group. More safari drives filled our afternoons, with Cora never once missing a sunset worth photographing.
Our final afternoon brought the adventure we’d been building toward the whole trip. Instead of climbing into vehicles, we set out on foot with our guides for a bush walk, spotting rhinos, wildebeest, and more birds than we could count while learning from our guides about the ecosystem around us. As the sun dropped, we rounded a corner to find a full dinner waiting right in the middle of the bush, lanterns glowing, tables set, everything lit by firelight. It was the perfect place for one last Moonup, a chance to really sit with everything we’d shared over the past two and a half weeks before heading back to camp to sleep in our own tents.
Before sunrise the next morning, we bundled up in blankets, grabbed some hot chocolate, and climbed back into the vehicles for one final game drive. Just when we thought the trip had run out of surprises, we came across two cheetahs slowly circling a waterbuck in the early morning light, an incredible way to close out our time in the bush. After one last breakfast together, we packed up, stopped for coffee on the way, and headed to the airport.
It’s hard to put into words how grateful we are for this group. Cora, Harper, Kate, Annie F., Teddie, Carys, West, Annie S., Miles, Jane, Maddie, Emily, and Owen worked hard, embraced every challenge, and made these past two and a half weeks something we’ll genuinely never forget. Thank you for trusting us with your incredible kids this summer. Watching them grow closer to each other and to a community halfway around the world has been one of the true highlights of our year. We can’t wait to see everything they go on to do.
Until next time,
Claire & William

What an unforgettable few days it has been! After saying goodbye to the beaches of Mozambique, our group traded surfboards for safari vehicles, and the excitement has only continued to grow. Every morning has brought another incredible wildlife encounter, every afternoon another story to tell, and every evening another campfire filled with laughter. This group has embraced every early wake-up call, every game drive, and every new experience with excitement, curiosity, and plenty of smiles.
Our journey to the reserve was an adventure all on its own. As we drove through the gates, everyone was immediately pointing out the windows as elephants wandered nearby and greeted us before we had even reached camp. The drive through the savannah was breathtaking, with zebras, impalas, wildebeest, colorful birds, squirrels, antelope, and warthogs appearing around nearly every corner. By the time we reached our beautiful glamping tents, everyone was already convinced this would be an unforgettable part of the trip.
After settling in, we climbed into our safari vehicles for our very first game drive. We watched hippos splashing alongside their babies, admired graceful giraffes reaching high into the trees, and couldn’t stop taking photos of the incredible scenery around us. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we headed back to camp for a delicious dinner before ending the evening around the fire.
The next morning started with one of the coolest experiences yet as everyone had the chance to feed rhinos and buffalo from the back of a utility truck. Watching these enormous animals gently take food from our hands was something none of us will soon forget. Annie S. and Madeline couldn’t stop smiling as the rhinos walked right up beside the truck, giving everyone an unforgettable up-close encounter.
From there, we visited the Ground Hornbill Conservation Project, where we learned about the incredible work being done to protect one of Africa’s most endangered bird species. The guides were amazed by how engaged our group was. West and Carys asked thoughtful questions throughout the visit, while Owen was just as enthusiastic, eager to learn more about the birds and their conservation. By the end of the visit, the group had already decided they wanted to keep up with the project back home, making sure to remember the Ground Hornbill Project so they could follow its work once they had their phones back.
Lunch that afternoon overlooked a peaceful lake filled with hippos while monkeys climbed through the nearby trees hoping to catch a glimpse of our picnic. Soon afterward, our guides led us into the bush in search of two brother cheetahs. Tracking them through the reserve before quietly approaching on foot with our guides made the experience feel like something straight out of a nature documentary. Watching the two brothers lounging in the shade just a short distance away was one of those moments that made the entire reserve feel incredibly wild and untouched.
Our next full day somehow managed to top the last. The morning began with another search for wildlife before we stumbled upon two lionesses resting beside their three tiny cubs. Watching the cubs curiously wander around their mothers was one of those moments that left everyone speechless. We aren’t sure who was more excited- us or the guides! After lunch back at the lodge, we spent the afternoon exploring more of the reserve, eventually spotting a herd of elephants as they pushed over trees while feeding. We even stopped at a scenic overlook where we could watch the sun begin to set over the reserve before heading back down to get even closer to the elephants. It was one of those evenings where every direction seemed worthy of another photo.
Between game drives, the lodge quickly began to feel like home. Free time usually meant someone starting a spikeball match, another group pulling out Bananagrams, and, almost without fail, Owen organizing another hacky sack circle that eventually grew large enough to include several of our safari guides. Jane and Kate quickly established themselves as the reigning Bananagrams champions, while Annie F. and Kate became a formidable spikeball team that was tough to beat. Some afternoons were spent dipping our feet in the pool, relaxing in the heated tents after early mornings, or simply watching rhinos wander just outside camp.
The long drives between wildlife sightings have become some of our favorite parts of the trip. Teddie somehow manages to keep everyone laughing no matter how early the wake-up call was, whether she’s confidently breaking into song or delivering another perfectly timed joke. Miles has become our resident fashion expert, somehow managing to wear the best outfit in camp every single day. Meanwhile, Harper’s thoughtful observations during our game drives have led to some of our favorite conversations as a group, and his calm perspective has become something everyone appreciates.
As incredible as the wildlife has been, it’s been just as rewarding watching this group grow closer with every passing day. Every meal, every campfire, and every safari seems to bring another shared joke or unforgettable memory. Little did we know, however, that our biggest adventure, and one very special birthday surprise, was still waiting just around the corner.
Our final full day at the reserve just happened to fall on a very special occasion-Jane’s 16th birthday! We made sure she woke up to birthday music, balloons, and plenty of excitement, although none of us realized the best birthday surprise was still to come. That morning, we learned we would be joining a wildlife veterinarian for a routine health examination of a white rhino. It was an experience few of us ever imagined we would have, and one we certainly won’t forget.
After the rhino had been safely tranquilized by the veterinary team, everyone had the opportunity to take part in different aspects of the examination. Birthday girl Jane and Carys climbed into the dart vehicle with the veterinary team, giving them a front-row seat to the entire conservation process. Owen carefully helped clean a wound on the rhino while West, Annie S., and Madeline monitored the animal by helping administer oxygen throughout the procedure. Kate worked alongside the veterinarians to create a small identification notch in the rhino’s ear while also collecting a tiny skin sample used for conservation records. Teddie located the rhino’s microchip before she and Annie F. helped administer two of its injections, while Harper helped measure the rhino’s horn as part of its health assessment and Emily carefully sprayed disinfectant over the treated wound to help prevent infection and tick bites. Everyone else had the chance to closely observe the examination, gently feel the remarkable difference between the rhino’s soft and tough skin, and learn firsthand about the incredible work that goes into protecting these amazing animals. It was an unforgettable morning filled with learning, teamwork, and conservation.
After such an incredible experience, we enjoyed lunch atop a beautiful rock formation overlooking the reserve. The views were spectacular, and everyone spent time climbing around the rocks, taking photos, and soaking in the scenery. Cora was one of the first to scramble to the top, making the most of every viewpoint before we headed back out for another game drive.
As if the day couldn’t get any better, our guides had one final surprise waiting for us. That afternoon, we found two tiny cheetah cubs resting with their mother, and before long the curious cubs wandered right up beside our safari vehicle. It was one of the rarest wildlife encounters any of us had ever experienced, and there were smiles all around. West couldn’t stop talking about how incredible it was to watch the cubs from so close, while Cora declared it one of her favorite moments of the entire trip. Cameras were clicking nonstop as everyone tried to capture a memory that almost didn’t seem real.
Back at camp, the celebration continued with a traditional South African braai featuring pork chops, pap, oxtail, vegetables, and, of course, a giant birthday cake for Jane. We gathered around with candles, confetti, and plenty of singing before ending another wonderful evening with Moonup beneath the stars. It was hard to imagine a more memorable way to celebrate turning sixteen! We love you Jane!!!
Some of our favorite memories haven’t even happened during the game drives. They’ve happened in the little moments in between-playing hacky sack while waiting for dinner, getting way too competitive over Bananagrams, warming up with hot chocolate after chilly mornings, or sitting around the fire talking long after the day’s adventures were over. It’s been so much fun watching this group grow closer every single day.
Our final morning began before sunrise for one last safari. Wrapped in blankets with cups of hot chocolate in hand, we set off just as the bush began to wake up. We were lucky enough to spot the lion cubs one final time, along with countless giraffes, zebras, antelope, wildebeest, birds, and other wildlife that made every game drive feel completely different from the last. Although we were sad to say goodbye to our incredible guides and this beautiful reserve, everyone left with full camera rolls, unforgettable memories, and a much greater appreciation for the incredible conservation work taking place here.
As we packed up and headed toward our next adventure, we couldn’t help but reflect on everything this group had already experienced together. From feeding rhinos and tracking cheetahs to celebrating birthdays, learning from veterinarians, and watching sunsets across the African savannah, these past few days have been nothing short of extraordinary. We are so grateful to spend this adventure alongside such kind, adventurous, and enthusiastic students, and we can’t wait to share what the rest of South Africa has in store.
Until next time,
Claire & William

Hi SAF 2B families and friends!
What an incredible first few days it has been! It already feels like this group has been together much longer than just a few days. Every activity has brought new adventures, plenty of laughter, and lots of memories that we know will stick with us for a long time. From riding waves in the Indian Ocean to exploring local villages and sailing at sunset, this group has jumped into every experience with excitement and enthusiasm.
Our adventure officially began after landing in Johannesburg, where everyone was ready for a good night’s sleep after a long day of travel. The next morning, we were back at the airport, eagerly boarding our flight to Mozambique. As we flew over the coastline, everyone pressed their faces against the windows to admire the turquoise water, towering sand dunes, and endless stretches of untouched coastline below. The long drive to our beachside home gave everyone time to get to know one another, and before long the conversations and laughter made it feel like we had already been traveling together for weeks. Long drives have quickly become one of our favorite parts of the trip. Somewhere between Jane’s stories, Owen’s Ace Hardware tales, Teddie’s running jokes, and Miles’ perfectly timed one-liners, the hours seem to disappear before we even realize we’ve arrived. After enjoying a delicious spaghetti dinner followed by brownies and ice cream, we gathered for our very first Moonup on the beach beneath an incredible blanket of stars before heading off to bed.
Our first full day started with surfing, and this group wasted no time impressing us. Cora, Emily, Harper, and Kate all looked completely at home on their boards, catching wave after wave and encouraging everyone around them. Harper also has a way of saying exactly the right thing at exactly the right time, and the group has quickly come to appreciate his thoughtful perspective. After a morning in the water, we headed straight to the beach for volleyball, where Annie S. quickly became one of the strongest players on the court while Owen made sure a hacky sack game was never far away whenever there was free time. Before lunch, Miles quietly took it upon himself to collect beach trash during our cleanup, making a real difference while helping keep the shoreline beautiful.
That afternoon, we climbed aboard our ocean safari boats hoping to spot marine wildlife. Although the whales stayed hidden this time, everyone loved bouncing through the waves, searching for sea life, and soaking up the sunshine. Back at the hostel, downtime quickly turned into card games and friendly competitions. Annie F. proudly claimed victory during a spirited game of BS, while Jane kept everyone entertained with one hilarious story after another. Our first Leaders of the Day wrapped up the evening with a wonderful Moonup before everyone headed to bed excited for another full day ahead.
The following morning started with another beautiful boat ride before we made our way to a nearby village for a traditional cooking lesson. We learned how local ingredients are transformed into matapa, a delicious Mozambican dish served alongside fresh fish, rice, tropical fruit, and homemade bread. Everyone enjoyed helping prepare the meal, and West eagerly jumped into the cooking activities while Madeline was happy to lend a hand wherever she could. After lunch, many of the group spent time playing with local children before we headed to the coast for one of the highlights of the trip: a sunset sail aboard a traditional wooden dhow. As the wind filled the sails and the sun began to set, everyone soaked in the incredible views while enjoying snacks and conversation together. It was one of those evenings none of us wanted to end.
Our final full day in Mozambique brought another chance to surf and play volleyball, and somehow everyone was even more excited than the first day. Teddie kept the energy high by confidently singing along to every song during our drives and making the whole group laugh with her endless stream of jokes. After lunch, we climbed aboard the colorful local trucks and headed to the market to celebrate Mozambique’s Independence Day alongside the community. The market was full of music, handmade crafts, paintings, and delicious treats. Carys and Teddie showed off their impressive bargaining skills while searching for souvenirs, and Madeline carefully picked out thoughtful gifts for family back home. Meanwhile, Cora and Teddie were still proudly showing off the matching bucket hats they had picked out together during our airport travels, which quickly became a favorite group joke.
Back at the hostel, everyone squeezed in as many games as possible before our last evening together in Mozambique. Whether it was volleyball, hacky sack, cards, or simply talking on the porch, no one seemed quite ready for the day to end. Owen continued to keep everyone laughing with stories from home and his now-famous morning routine, while Miles proved that he does not have to say a lot to make the whole group laugh. We wrapped up with another meaningful Moonup before packing our bags for an early departure.
As we made our way back toward the airport, it was amazing to think about how much this group had already experienced together in just a few short days. Between the endless conversations, shared meals, beach adventures, and plenty of laughter, these students have already built friendships that are so much fun to watch. We are incredibly excited for everything still ahead as we continue exploring South Africa together.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful kids with us. They have been adventurous, encouraging, and always willing to jump into something new. We can’t wait to share the next chapter of our adventure!
Until next time,
Claire & William
