Bittersweet Bye Bye to Big Wild!

July 23, 2026

Hi Big Wild family and friends,

We come to you with our final trip update as we wrap our heads around having to say goodbye. It’s hard to believe the last time we checked in, we had just finished our rafting trip and landed back in Jackson. So much has happened since that we can’t wait to tell you about!

Day 10. Starting from where we last left off, we woke up this morning at our well loved and original campsite, Gros Ventre. Not too shabby of a Grand Teton National Park view! Today was our hike day, so we set off towards Teton Village after a hearty breakfast and packed lunch sandwiches in our packs. When we arrived, we hopped onto the Jackson Hole aerial tram, a cable car ascending 4139 feet up the mountain. The views were spectacular, and only got better once we got out and enjoyed the lookout spot. The smell of waffles coming from Corbet’s Cabin, a famous waffle shop, was delectable, and immediately became our next stop. Nothing beats munching on Nutella, cookie butter, or bacon waffles while overlooking the mountain range. Then, we hiked to the absolute peak, reading about the formation of these mountains going back to the Ice Age. We held a daytime Moonup, also called Sunup, to both hype and ground us before our hike down the Cirque Trail. The hike was so geographically diverse: we walked through snow and rocks followed by wildflower meadows and streams. A couple miles later, we ended at the top of the Bridger gondola for lunch. We then headed back down to the village via gondola to prep for an amazing evening ahead. We took a grocery pitstop and headed to Phil Baux park, a nice green space walkable to the rodeo. Shoutout to Oliver and Lily for grocery shopping and heading up our grill out tonight! We cooked burgers and hot dogs, eating and listening to music on this perfectly warm summer evening. Then, we walked to the famous Jackson Hole Rodeo to see a classic western rodeo filled with bull riding, bronco busting, and horse barrel racing. The evening was amazing, but bittersweet as we said goodbye to Oliver on his last night. We shared a nice moon up, and cupcakes to finish out the night. Oliver, we miss you already!

Day 11. Our first day of climbing! We woke up bright and early to prep for an awesome day in the Park. We met our guides, Hally, Simon, and Garrick, who got us ready and fitted with shoes, harnesses, and helmets. The Exum Mountain guides were extremely knowledgeable, working for the oldest mountain service in North America! Together, we headed into a remote area with tons of big boulders to practice off, called Boulder City. Thanks to Mae for learning how to belay, we ran four routes ranging in difficulty, but all with challenging sections. Gaining practice and tips from the guides was the number one key to our success. Shoutout to Alban for his speed and technique up the rocks! We then learned how to rappel down from that same rock, utilizing different techniques to hoist ourselves down. It was a great introduction to rock climbing, which called for some well deserved ice cream, so we headed into town! Moo’s Gourmet Ice Cream was the perfect place for a delicious treat with a side of the World Cup finale, which Harry was especially excited for. From there, we introduced the newest and exciting evening activity: Iron Chef! The group was split into two, being Mae’s team versus Harry’s team. The goal was to plan a meal plan, grocery shop, and execute a creative dish all following a certain budget and time restriction. May the best team win! Lillian was awesome in the grocery store, finding ways to fancy the meal up with drinks without going over budget. Hudson’s creative vision included steak sandwiches, in which he led up the bulk of the entree. Wells, on the other hand, envisioned a pasta dish with three sauce variations! John was on bacon duty, with Lily on pasta. Both meals came with drinks, appetizers, the dish, and dessert. To say we ate good would be an understatement, and ultimately, both teams excelled. This night was epic and kept us fueled up for tomorrow’s bigger climb!

Day 12. Second day of climbing awaits! This morning we started off waking up and having breakfast of bagels, fruit, and yogurt. After getting ready for the day, we headed to Grand Teton National Park to meet our guides for the day on the rocks. We met the guides at their office and they gave us a run down on what the day would look like and how we were going to build off of the previous day. Following this debrief we headed to the boat dock at Jenny Lake. We waited for a few moments before taking a short ride on the water to the other side of the lake for our climbing. This ride was gorgeous as we were able to see the Teton peaks to the left with rolling hills and mountains to the right. Once we landed on the opposing dock, we had a short hike up to hidden falls, a fantastic waterfall hidden in the trees of the park. This is where we geared up and got ready to hit the rocks. We next had another short hike up to where we all started our climb. This first section was a good path to get warmed up for what came later in the day. It was fun for us all to be in lines next to one another as we scaled the rock face. Once we conquered this section it was time to move to the more intense aspects of the day. There were many routes of climbing so our group split up into groups of three each having a designated guide for that group. Everyone then started moving up the rock. These sections were multi pitch meaning as you climb up you must continuously clip into new holds on the mountain. Watching each member of our group successfully challenge themselves and succeed at this activity was extraordinary. Shoutout to Lily for her super speedy climbing, of which the guides quickly noticed! This was not an easy climb and everyone was able to make it through. After reaching the top we walked slightly down the mountain to repel. While the others practiced this skill the day before, Caroline tried repelling for the first time today! Without hesitation, she was a pro! This was fascinating and a fun, unique way to get back down the climb we just completed. Once back we had around a 2.5 mile hike back to Exum’s office to unfortunately say our farewells to the guides. We then headed back to camp to grab our U-Haul and drive to Jackson Lake where we had dinner, personalized pizzas, and hung out with an incredible view of the water. This area was extremely pretty and it was nice to reflect on our tough two previous days in a fun environment. The night concluded with a gorgeous sunset over the water and mountains, finishing up a perfect second day on the rocks.

Day 13. Town day!!! Today was unfortunately our last full day, however, it was the highly anticipated town day. We started the day off with a wonderful breakfast of pancakes. This was a perfect way to start the morning and keep everyone happy and fueled. We then headed to town where our first stop was at the recreational center to shower, leaving everyone feeling nice and clean for exploring town. Next, it was lunch time where we prepared bbq pork sandwiches sitting in May park soaking in the sun and relaxing. After a great lunch it was time to hit the town. We started off by going to Browze and Buy, a local thrift shop, to buy fun clothes for the day ahead. Everyone’s outfit was unique and fun to be around. Caroline’s nightgown outfit for Hudson got some especially great laughs! Following our thrift store stop, we visited several souvenir stores where the students were able to buy local Jackson, Wyoming merchandise. In fact, in one store in particular, Lee’s Tees, some students were able to score a free t-shirt from the manager because of his love for kids having an enjoyable time in his store. Next, we found a fun old feel candy shop where most students got a unique candy they usually can’t find or don’t usually have as a nice treat. Following some further exploration of the town it was banquet time. For the banquet we decided to go to Cutty’s, a Philly cheesesteak specialty restaurant. The dinner was super special, where we all continued connecting with one another as well as laughing at moments we had experienced earlier in the trip. Our dinner lasted a while, however, it didn’t feel long because the conversations continued rolling. Following dinner we made our way to Albertsons to get supplies to make root beer floats, a perfect final dessert for our trip. We enjoyed this sweet treat at a nearby park as the sun went down. To conclude a wonderful final day we headed back to camp to have a heart felt Moonup reflecting on the relationships we have formed and how we have grown as people throughout our trip together.

Day 14. Departure day. It is such a bittersweet day, reflecting on how amazing the trip has been all while having to say goodbye. Hugs, cries, and words of hopefulness for the time we meet again were shared. While it’s only been two weeks, it’s so difficult to imagine life not spent together camping under the stars each night. Thank you so much for sharing your child or friend with us this summer. This trip has been so memorable in so many ways, and we couldn’t be more grateful to have experienced it all with these amazing kids. We can’t wait for the next time we meet again, but for now, have a wonderful rest of your summer. We miss BGW 5A already!

Best Regards,

Franny and Stephen

Stories from the Salmon!

July 18, 2026

Greetings from Jackson,

We’ve just touched base back at our campsite in the Tetons after having explored three other states, including Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. We fit so much in and can’t wait to tell you all about our crazy adventures that have led us back to the beginning. It’s been so amazing so far, we can’t believe we’re already over halfway! Let’s get into the details.

We left off last time getting prepped for our white water adventure on the Salmon River! Hence, day 5 was a big one. After an early wake up and munching on some croissants and fruit, we were ready to start making our way towards the Salmon. We met our guides at Hammer Creek, about two hours from McCall. Here, we learned all about safety protocol and what the next couple days would look like, rafting, camping, and enjoying three nights and four days on the Salmon River! From there, we hopped into our boats which consisted of two paddle boats, and two gear boats that held our stuff and food. Each student learned how to paddle and we hit a few class II rapids before landing at our lunch spot. Shoutout to Caroline for rowing the entire boat within the first 15 minutes of being on the river! At lunch we threw the football and frisbee while enjoying the white sandy beach and an amazing sandwich spread.  Then it was time to get back on the river! We enjoyed lots of float time and jumps into the cool water, allowing us to escape the heat and mess around.  After the swim we had a few more rapids before we started looking for camp. It was a packed day; beaches were full, so we kept going, paddling through Green Canyon and into Cougar Canyon. However, our patience to find the best beach proved us right as we stumbled into the most coveted beach on the lower Salmon: White House beach!  This pristine, large white beach was perfect for our crowd. We helped the guides unload the supplies boat using a fire line, unloading our bags and kitchen and cooking supplies. After unloading, our group played spike ball and went on a short hike before dinner to explore the surrounding mountains and get a sunset view. Dinner time included grilled chicken, asparagus, rice, and the best carrot cake you could dream of. After dinner we hung out a little more and had a nice first Moonup of rafting under the stars. This meant Cowboy Camping, as there was no cloud in the sky and no need to sleep under shelter!

Day 6: FIRST FULL DAY OF RAFTING WOOO HOOO! Today we woke up on a wonderful beach with slightly rainy weather. Despite the rain, we were ready for the day having breakfast burritos for breakfast. Following our meal, we hit the water. Today was our big rapid day with two class IV rapids. Early in the day we went through Cougar Canyon which was home to our first class IV. Cougar canyon was beautiful with tall jagged cliff edges. Before our first class IV rapid each student got out to help scout the water to find the optimal path to make it through. This was such a wonderful opportunity from each student to see how our guides approach the water. Once we conquered this rapid we continued on. After the morning the rain stopped and the weather became clear and wonderful. Everyone was able to get in and cool off as the water got warmer. After some swimming it was time for our second class IV rapid. Again, our group got out to help scout the water. In addition to scouting the water, this area was home to remnants of an old Chinese immigrants stone home from the past. After scouting, we again were able to safely make it through this water. It was now lunch time where we found a nice large beach. During lunch we played spike ball and had wonderful deli sandwiches. Wells crushed spike ball and it was so cool to see his skills and competitiveness come out during the games! It was then again time to head back onto the water. In the afternoon we played two games, T-grip Tuesday, one we made up, and T-grip wrestling. T-grip Tuesday was where we each attempted to push one another into the water during the calm sections, T-grip wrestling is when you link T-grips and try to lean back with a partner as far as you can off of the raft before falling in. These games were a great way for each of the students to bond and have fun on the water. Following a few more rapids we landed at camp. This camp site was extremely large and we continued to play spike ball and swim around. While at our campsite, Imogen showed her curiosity and love for the outdoors hiking up the mountain with Franny on the back side of our campsite to look over the surrounding area and peaks above. In addition to this, Hudson and Stephen got the fly rods out and landed a few small mouth bass on top water! We also explored the area until it was time for dinner. Shout out to Alban for giving Harry and John some sweet beachside haircuts! Dinner was fantastic with pork chops, mashed potatoes, and sautéed vegetables and pineapple. Dinner time meant an incredible sunset that was perfect to see after a long day on the water. We concluded the day with Moonup star gazing in our sleeping bags, a perfect moment after an incredible day in the rapids.

Day 7, known by some students as the best day of the entire trip! It started off like the previous days on the beach, but with the fuel of warm, vanilla blueberry pancakes and eggs. Since we’d already traveled quite far the past two days, we had less mileage to cover. This meant more fun on the river! Shoutout to our guide Kylie for turning 23 AND rowing her first paddle boat on this day! The rapids were smaller sets of class II and class III today, where we explored fun, roller-coaster like water. By 11am, we hit a super cool cliff jumping spot above the bright blue water. All thirteen of us jumped in, going over and over again. Today was a hot one, with temperatures soaring over 90 degrees, so the water was idyllic. Oliver hit up some especially cool jumps along with his cousin Harry! Shoutout to Mae for overcoming her fear of heights and jumping right in! Then, we continued rafting until we hit the confluence between the Salmon and Snake River. Here, we had lunch on this beautiful beach covered in colorful rocks that Caroline deemed “rainbow beach.” We ate Cesar wraps and played in the water; Imogen, Lily, Lillian, and Caroline fought through some intense shoulder fights! After this, we hit our last rapid of the paddle section and “motored up” where the four boats attached into a diamond shaped power boat to get us through the flat part of the Snake river. While boating up, the students all explored a huge waterfall, hiking around it and swimming through it. Then, we all took some time to relax and nap on our big boat before finding our last campsite of the trip. This campsite is especially cool, as it connects to a public Orchard. Not only did we see deer and other animals roaming, we also found apricots, apples, cherries, pears, and so much more. The serve is a great snack before our taco dinner. Post tacos, homemade peach crumble did not disappoint! We then had an early Moonup, joined by our amazing guides. We ended up spending the evening looking at the stars for a while, before sleeping right underneath them to sum up an amazing day.

Day 8, was unfortunately our last day on the water. We started the day by packing up camp and having breakfast sandwiches as our morning meal. It was then again time to hop back onto the rafts. We started our day by motoring through several rapids and slower moving sections. Early on, we crossed the border of Oregon and teetered along the borders of Idaho and Washington as we continued on the river. During this motoring section we saw many houses that were only accessible through the water. Along with this the mountains were spectacular seeing many cool cliffs, peaks, and boulders. After a short ride with the motor and the boats attached we detached and paddled our way to the put out at Heller Bar. At the put out we re-packed our duffles and unfortunately had to say goodbye to our guides. Each student thanked everyone one of them for our time on the water. We piled into the van and headed off to our campsite. Early in on the drive everyone got a much needed nap in. This early part of the drive was in Washington state, a new state for many of our students. After everyone was awake, we sang and listened to everyone’s favorite song to keep the drive entertaining. In addition to this singing, we played karaoke which was such a hit as everyone was able to sing together. We passed through several small towns including Riggins and McCall, our fly fishing and rafting base town. Following more time in the car we made it close to our campsite where the LODs, Lillian and John helped us leaders shop for the night’s dinner. After shopping we pushed on and made it to our campsite at the park. The drive in was spectacular with an unbelievable sunset with plateaus and sand dunes in the distance. Once we got into camp we unloaded and had Moonup and slept under the stars, our best view of the stars all trip!

Day 9 was a mix of sand dune exploration and travel, eventually getting us back to our home in Jackson, WY! The sunrise and morning light was absolutely stunning here surrounded by beautiful dunes, lakes, and forests! We started with some amazing cinnamon rolls and eggs before summiting some of the most beautiful and natural dunes in all of North America. The drive took eight hours, with a couple of fun stops in between to explore towns in Idaho and see the last of the state. The car ride involved lots of fun music, karaoke, games, and good power naps. It was only right that we landed in Jackson to the most stunning pink and orange skies. Dinner was one of the best we’ve had, shout out to our Atlanta LOD’s, Hudson and Caroline, for cheffing up the most amazing tacos inspired by Willy’s Mexicana Grill!

Now that we are back in Jackson, we will be staying here for the rest of the trip continuing on with amazing Teton views, hiking, and rock climbing. And maybe even a Rodeo! It’s amazing to think we’ve only known each other for a couple days, as we are one BIG WILD ⛰️ family, and will continue to explore these next couple of days! We look forward to checking in with you all, but for now, see you soon!

Best,

Franny and Stephen

Exploring the Tetons!

July 13, 2026

Hi Moondance families and friends,

We are so thrilled that our Big Wild adventure has finally started!! It’s been an amazing start to our trip, full of fun activities, insane views of the Tetons, good food, and even better bonding. We are so excited to share what we’ve been up to so far!

On Day 1, everyone arrived safely in Jackson, WY. It’s safe to say that landing within the Grand Teton National Park boundaries is a pretty amazing first view of the trip. Once all together, we hopped in our special van, a 15 person vehicle with a U-haul attached to join us on our Wild West tour. Then, we headed straight to our first campsite. Just five minutes from our campsite, we witnessed a mama and baby moose eating down by the river. If that’s not a sign that this trip is going to be amazing, I don’t know what is! The campsite was so spacious and snuck in some amazing looks of the Teton peaks. We set up our campsite for the evening: tents, sleeping bags, and bedtime essentials laid out for our return post dinner. Mae and Imogen set up their tent in record speed, one that everyone impressively commented on! Then, back to the van for our first stop, some comfort pizza! We brought dinner to T.A. Moulton Barn, a historic old structure facing the National Park. The sunset views were astonishing, making it ideal for some light football and barn grounds exploring. During dinner, we shared stories and lighthearted ice breakers about ourselves. The group felt so excited to meet and become friends, as it felt so seamless. Once the sun’s last rays disappeared, Franny and Stephen led our first Moonup, a time each night where we spend moments together sharing and reflecting. The kids shared what they were most excited about and most afraid about on the trip. It was a perfect way to connect and set ourselves up for the next two weeks together. We hit the hay hard the moment we returned to our little campsite home, excitedly preparing for our first full day together!

First full day! We are so excited! To start the day, we cooked pancakes with chocolate chips. This meal was definitely a hit and was great to start our trip off right. Following breakfast it was time for our activities of the day. We headed to Snow King Mountain which overlooks the town of Jackson to do ropes courses and zip lines. We began with the zip line section which features three ziplines increasing in steepness and length as they go on. The first zipline is smaller and more of a practice to get an understanding of how to control your speed with the zipline. Next was the medium course followed by the largest. The largest zipline we rode is actually the steepest zipline in North America. This ride reaches up to 65 MPH, an unreal speed to hit heading down an entire mountain. After our zip line section we began the ropes courses. There are a total of 4 ropes courses progressively getting harder as time went on. Each student bravely conquered the first two courses, helping conquer a fear of heights and learning more about what they are capable of. Only two students, Alban and Lily, were able to complete each of the courses. This demonstrated a lot of perseverance and dedication to keep moving forward because the courses were difficult and took long periods of time. In addition to the ropes courses and zip lines, during our free time we were able to ride the alpine coaster and alpine slide, both fantastic past time activities. Following our day at snow king we headed to May Park where it was time for dinner. Imogen and Wells helped out a ton with this meal where we cooked stir fry. They were such wonderful chefs and everyone loved the first cooked dinner of the trip. It was now moonup and bed time. We headed back to camp where we all got ready for bed and had a fantastic Friday Moonup ran by the LODs Imogen and John.

Day 3 was a long one, so “buckle up!” Today, we embarked on our biggest road trip of the summer. After an early morning bagel breakfast, we packed up camp and said goodbye to Gros Ventre. Don’t worry, we will be back soon! We hopped in the van and started our journey from Jackson, WY to McCall, ID. This long journey started with a couple good extra hours to catch up on sleep. Then, it transformed into a car full of karaoke, car games, 20 questions, and many laughs. We can’t forget the fun gas station stops. Shoutout to Wells and John for heading up much of the music queue! We broke up the trip in Twin Falls, ID to munch on a Raising Cane’s lunch. We ate while out looking onto the amazing waterfalls and famous bridge overlooking the Snake River. It was amazing to watch people BASE jump off the bridge, soaring through the skies before safely landing at the bottom. Then, we took a quick stop to grab friendship making string. Shoutout to Caroline and Lillian for kindly teaching Lily how to make string friendship bracelets! The journey lasted 11 hours as  we followed beautiful Idaho mountains and the Snake River all the way to our destination. Cheers rang through the car the moment we saw the sign for “McCall, ID” as a sense of excitement and relief passed. Lily and Harry were great helpers once we arrived, picking up last minute grocery supplies and immediately getting started on cooking dinner. Our campsite for the next two nights was part of Ponderosa State Park, an area overlooking the beautiful Payette Lake. It was a great place to throw the football and sit around our campsite “kitchen” eating pasta bolognese and Caesar salad. We all couldn’t wait to sleep under the stars, so we collectively decided to “cowboy camp,” ditching the tents and committing to the fresh air. Lily, Alban, Lillian, and Caroline set up hammocks, while the rest settled in below. Having Moonup and falling asleep under that open sky, surrounded by people we met only days ago yet already feel like family, was a gift none of us will forget.

We can’t believe it’s already Day 4. Today we woke up and it was time to get our lines in the water. We started the morning off with breakfast of bagels and yogurt. Next we headed over to Drift West to meet up with our fishing guides. We followed them to a nearby park where everyone learned many different casting techniques as well as how to tie many knots. It was now lunch time where we headed to a picnic table overlooking Payette lake, a perfect view for lunch. After hanging out for around an hour we met back up with the guides and drove to a nearby creek. The day was difficult, however, despite this difficulty Oliver was able to catch the only fish of the day, a nice 19 inch rainbow trout. Even though it was a tough day on the water, each student was able to learn many new skills and overall how to fly fish. After packing up, we went to Salmon Raft to collect our gear for the following days rafting. We next went back to our campsite to pack up for the days on the water. Once we concluded packing, our group went to Pueblo Lindo Mexican Restaurant for a meal in the town. This was a perfect meal before heading out to the water. Following a wonderful dinner we raced to see the sunset over Payette Lake and have Moonup in a beautiful location. Shoutout Hudson and May for running Moonup on a Payette Lake dock during one best sunsets of the trip so far. We finished up another great day connecting with each other and learning more new skills.

Tomorrow, we embark on a whole new adventure: white water rafting! This three night, four day overnight trip is the perfect next activity for us. We can’t wait to travel over 70 miles by boat, and look forward to telling you all about the many adventures we will face. Time to go rest up!

We will chat soon,
