Hello from the Grand ol’ Tetons! The past couple of days have been a blend of so many bittersweet moments as we wrap up the trip. This adventure has truly flown by and we are so devastated to say goodbye after these two weeks. However, here are some highlights from our last days out west!
Good morning! Our team woke up and headed to Teton Village once we finished our tasty campsite breakfast. After a short drive we landed in the village and it was time for the aerial tram. We all piled into the tram where the guide shared a little bit about the mountain and the resort of Jackson Hole. Within the tram we were able to see the ski slope below along with the valley and mountains that stretched around the beautiful area. After a short ride we made it to the top where we found Corbets Waffles. Within the restaurant we all purchased the famous mountain waffles and invested in many unique stickers. The waffles were delicious and everyone loved them. While we were up on this peak we scanned the area in front of the resort and behind it seeing many cool birds and paragliders. Next, it was time for our hike down. Our group took the Cirque trail, which in total is about 2 miles, and started heading down the mountain. Early on into the hike we walked by Corbets and was able to witness the steep terrain of this famous ski run. We then continued on seeing many fascinating birds and views. At the conclusion of our hike was the bridger gondola that we took back to the base of the mountain. After arriving at the car we headed back to the campsite to change and quickly headed back to town. We found a nice picnic table at Snow King to have a nice cookout of burgers and hotdogs. During dinner we played hacky sack and basketball while the meal cooked. The burgers were a success and a perfect way to kick off our night at the rodeo. After cleaning our dinner location up we started walking to the rodeo. It was such a special night where we all cheered and screened for every event and rider. We also got a shoutout from the announcer which was extremely special and everyone was so excited to hear this. It was many students’ first rodeos which made this experience even more memorable. After the rodeo it was time for moonup and bed. We decided to do moonup in the town square to finish off a wonderful and action packed day.
Day 11 marked the start of our last big challenge and long awaited activity: rock climbing! With some nervous excitement, we woke up and immediately prepped for the day to come with a hearty breakfast before returning back to Teton Village to tackle some amazing bouldering and rock climbing routes within the Jackson Hole resort. We were lucky enough to be joined by the guides from Exum Adventures, the oldest and most experienced climbing service in the United States! After getting us “geared” up, we hopped on the Bridger Gondola, took in some amazing views of the mountain resort, and landed at our destination at over 9,000 feet in elevation! Then, bouldering and climbing time! We practiced both ascending and descending the rocks without rope using expert balance techniques. Then, we learned how to set up and climb a route using multi-pitch climbing. Here, we were connected to each other via ropes and had to trust and listen to one another to succeed. The teamwork displayed was seamless and demonstrated our tight group dynamic off the bat. Shoutout to Whalen and Heyward for taking the lead during the climbs! After some great rock time, we hiked back to the top of the Gondola for a joyride back down before an incoming storm hit. We made it with 10 minutes to spare. Alex was so speedy on the ropes, he was even told to slow down so the guides could keep up with his belay! After making it back down, our team hit downtown Jackson for some well deserved local ice cream at Moo’s Gourmet! Here, we surprised the group with a new, fun challenge and plan for the evening: Master Chef. Virginia led one group, while Heyward led the other in a friendly cooking competition. The two groups each came up with their own dinner extravaganza and grocery shopped, all under a set budget. Shoutout to Elinor for taking the lead on grocery shopping for her team! Sam, on the other team, added some friendly competition with his quesadilla cooking and presentation skills. Then, they got to cooking, presenting two amazing meals: chicken fried rice and loaded chicken quesadillas. Both dinners were so good – some even said they were the best of the entire trip! This truly was a special and fun day – ending in a Moonup at Wedding Tree, a special location with some of the best views of the Tetons in the area.
The following day was an extension of climbing from the previous day. We started the morning off with a surprise breakfast of cinnamon rolls for the students. After breakfast we packed up the van and headed to Grand Teton National park to meet the Exum guides at their Jenny lake outpost. We then acquired our gear, suitable for the climbing we had in store. We hopped back into the car and had a short drive to “Boulder City” where there are many rocks scattered throughout and one larger boulder in the middle for climbing. This climb featured 4 different climbs to offer a variety of difficulty for everyone. It was so amazing to see everyone so excited about the day once we made it to the rock. During this time many students surprised themselves with their climbing abilities and bravery. Elinor was so impressive during this time and was able to scale up the most difficult section at such a fast speed. In addition to the climbing there was another boulder with a crawl space through it. This was a unique technical feature of the rock that most students conquered. This demonstrated so much bravery and the ability to stay calm in difficult and uncomfortable situations. Shoutout to Heyward for facing her fears of claustrophobia and heading straight through the tight hole! After multiple climbs we ventured further into the boulder field where we sat on top of a 20 foot cliff to learn how to rappel. Here, we personally lowered ourselves down a cliff or rock edge. Each student was successful at completing this new skill which was amazing to see the courage when heading down a steep slope. After finishing up repelling it was time to head back to re-distribute our gear back to the guides and finish up our day on the rocks. We then headed into town to grab some supplies before heading back to the park to settle in at Chapel at the Sacred Heart on Jackson Lake. Here, each student designed custom tee shirts with markers and signed one another’s. This was such a hit and it was amazing to see each student’s creativity when drawing. During this time everyone also headed down to the rocky beach overlooking the lake. After some hang out time it was time to cook where our LODs Elinor and Eve cooked one of the best meals of the trip, creamy tomato pasta with sausage. Each of them collaborated so well to prepare a fan favorite meal of the trip. Following dinner, we again walked down to the beach to witness one of the best sunsets ever, the sky was full of pink, purple, orange, and red. We concluded this day with moonup overlooking the lake and watching the final moments of the sunset. This was such a special day that we are sure the students will remember.
Happy 4th of July!! Day 13 was an especially exciting day, as this holiday marked our last full day together. What better way to celebrate than camping in the beautiful Tetons together? After munching on some gooey chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes, we showered and then headed into downtown Jackson to catch the rail end of the parade festivities. We then hung out at a local park, enjoying a grilled cheese and tomato soup cookout while playing hacky sack and sparkling up with 4th of July glitter and face paint. Shoutout to AC, Wrenn, and Molly for getting especially artsy with the paint! We enjoyed our town day, shopping through the western stores and apparel for fun gifts and candies. So many cowboy boots, leather jackets, and cool western gimmicks to peruse! After some time, we headed to Billy’s Burger for our big banquet dinner together. Burgers, fries, wings, salad, and shakes galore! This motivated us to pack up camp back at Gros Ventre to prepare for departure early the next morning. Rand was so helpful, packing up tents for other students and lending such a great helping hand. Then, FIREWORKS!! The downtown Jackson show was short and sweet, allowing us to enjoy a meaningful last Moonup together under the stars. So many kind words, aspirations, stories, and memories were shared encapsulating the entire trip. This was a perfect, deep, silly, and sweet way to end our big, crazy, wild adventure out west.
We have truly been on such an outstanding journey together. We’ve withstood cold and rainy weather, scaled mountains at 9,000 feet, slept under the stars on the banks of the Salmon River, and ziplined down tall mountainous peaks. We’ve sled down hot Idaho sand dunes, jumped into glacier lake water, and traveled through 4 different states. The memories, challenges, music, stories, jokes, and deep relationships we’ve formed are ones we will never forget. Thank you for sharing your amazing children with us this summer. Saying goodbye was such a difficult day, and tears were shed, but we are so thankful for this opportunity and so proud of everything we’ve done and accomplished. Cheers to Big Wild 3A!
Best wishes,
Franny and Stephen

Hello Moondance families and friends,
Big Wild 3A is here to check in, as we’ve gone on some amazing, fun adventures since we last gave an update! We just touched back in Jackson after a whirlwind of exploring Idaho, and even some bits of Oregon and Washington! Let’s start where we first left you, as we were on our way to rafting!
Day 5 started bright and early at the Salmon River. It was a rainy, cold day, but this did not stop our excitement about this 4 day, 3 night overnight white water rafting adventure that was starting today. We got ready for the trip, which consisted of packing all of our necessary overnight belongings into a large dry bag that would join us on the river, as we would not see our van again for the next couple of days. We met our amazing five guides: John, Kylie, Hayden, Justin, and Avery! After going through safety protocol and general of reviews of whitewater rafting, we hit the water in our two raft boats! Nerves were a little high, especially hearing it would be pretty cold and rainy for the trip. However, the students seemed so motivated and continued on with smiles on their faces. About an hour in, we jumped off to a white sand beach and enjoyed the perfect white water lunch: sandwiches, fruit, and cookies! Then, back to rafting for another 4 or so hours! Time flew by, especially with lots of singing, funny stories, beautiful views of the canyons and good company. We rafted a total of 20 miles today, before heading to our first campsite a pristine white beach. Some students even got to row, including Alex, Rand, and Wrenn! After setting up camp, Eve and Elinor explored the areas, hiking around the beautiful Idaho Hills, Rand enjoyed some fishing, and others enjoyed the riverside views at the beach. After crackers, and cheese appetizers, we enjoyed an amazing chicken and asparagus dinner cooked by our very guides. The cake was an especially amazing touch to a great day. Alex and Molly we’re amazing helpers for the guides as LODs and led a special Moon Up on the beach. We all went to bed, exhausted, and excited for what was to come the next day.
Day 6 commenced as we arose from our tents to the smell of eggs and bacon cooked by our awesome guides on the beach of the Salmon River. After packing up camp and breakfast, we threw our wetsuit back on and jumped back into our two boats for another day rafting. Today was considered a big rafting day, full of class two, three, and four rapids, throughout two various canyons! The geography was stunning, as we moved between extremely rocky and narrow shoots down the river, to open fields filled with cows, deer, birds, and even bighorn sheep. The weather was rainy, but lightened up a bit towards the end of our 20 mile stint. We made it to camp, which was this stunning rocky beach, filled with large stones of all colors and sizes. This was ideal for the wet weather, as we did not have to deal with cold sand! We chilled, enjoyed a campfire, and ate bruschetta in our Crazy Creek chairs as one big family. Dinner was once again amazing, in which we scarfed up pork chops, mashed potatoes, sautéed veggies, with a dessert of warm, gooey brownies. Virginia and Heyward led a Moonup, in which the guides joined us for. They were so impressed by how close and deep our conversation went, thanks to our amazing LOD’s and entire group. The moon that night was huge and shining bright, allowing us to sit and enjoy the light together before hitting the hay. Only a small chance of rain in the forecast meant a possibility of Cowboy camping! In fact, Sam, Rand, and Whalen all set sleeping bags up under the stars!
Day 7, our final full day of rafting! Luckily, it did not rain overnight, so the cowboy campers were saved from the rain! Rand, Whalen, and Sam all woke up in their sleeping bags to a cloudy but dry morning! After packing up camp, we all enjoyed homemade breakfast burritos together and prepped for another cold and challenging, but amazing day on the water. Eve and Rand were amazing sports as our LOD’s for the day, helping the guides clean every single dish and pack up the kitchen. They helped facilitate such positive energy for our last full-day push, which was helpful in the multi-day rain storm. We paddled through Blue Canyon today, a gorgeous section known for blue colored tall rocks lining each side of the river. Even as tired and cold as we were, the energy was still as positive as could be. AC led this initiative, continuing to add jokes and lighthearted comments which made the trip fly by! After about 12 miles, we stopped for lunch on a beach, huddling together and warming up with some sandwiches and chicken caesar wraps. Post lunch, our group got to experience something new: tying the two raft boats to the two “gear” boats and motoring through the confluence where the Snake River meets the Salmon River! We continued to motor through until around 4 PM, where our last campsite lie. This campsite was amazing, as we were staying on the Idaho side, looking into Oregon across the river, and we’re next to mountains that lied in Washington.. We unpacked camp, changed, and got warm! This beach was special, as it had hiking trails above and a beautiful Orchard next-door that we could walk-through. The whole group enjoyed a small hike above the beach to see a better view, though Sam, Rand, Alex, and Whalen adventured even further up! Some of the girls braided hair and hung out at camp, enjoying chips, salsa and bean dip. Dinner was again, SO GOOD!! We enjoyed make-it-yourself beef tacos with fixins and homemade slaw. The weather improved just in time for Moon up! Today marked a really special bonding day for our entire group from start to finish, and we couldn’t believe tomorrow would be our last day on the water.
Day 8 marked the last time, all white water rafting together. It was bittersweet, as we definitely went through challenges and hardships due to the weather however, we also bonded, learned so much, and felt such pride in our capabilities to have gotten through this time together. After enjoying breakfast sandwiches and hot chocolate, we packed up camp for the last time and got into our makeshift motorized boat. We mowed through the last stint of the snake river into Heller Bar, about 6 miles down from our campsite. Here, we pulled out and met our van to unpack all of our dry bags. Then we have dinner Van, heading directly from Washington back into Idaho. The car ride was perfect time to catch up on some zzz’s. We even fit in some time to grab items from Costco, with the help of Wrenn and Whalen to speed everything up! Within but felt like a flash, though ended up being six hours, ended at our next campsite: Bruneau State Park. The geography throughout this drive change drastically in which this new campsite sand dunes! After some much needed showers and a late dinner of pita pizzas, we headed to bed: cowboy camping style. The day was a success, minus some super late night battling of the sprinklers at the state park.
Today, day 9, marked the end of our non-Wyoming travels. We started our morning sledding and boarding down the infamous Idaho sand dunes! After lots of fun and sand, we made the long journey back to Jackson. We listened to lots of music, laughed to funny stories, and slept! We are happy to be back at Gros Ventre campsite, where it all started!

Wow… BIG WILD 3A is already off to an amazing start! It’s crazy to say we’ve only known each other for 3 days, yet have adventured through two states, seen amazing wildlife and views, and learned new skills! We’ve seen bears, deer, and ziplined down the deepest zipline in all of America. We’ve climbed through trees and ropes courses, swam in glacier lakes, learned to fly fish, caught Sucker fish, and experienced what it’s like to cook at a campsite. We’ve viewed amazing sunsets over the Tetons, jammed out to oldies songs on long drives, and turned acquaintances into deep friendships. Through it all, we have become one big family! Let’s rewind and share what exactly we’ve been up to so far on our journey!
Day one: arrival day! What an exciting, long, busy, nerve wracking but amazing day. We met our whole group at the Jackson, WY airport, with Virginia being first to arrive around 11:30am! Soon, everyone started flowing in, and we got to play icebreaker games outside, eat sandwiches, and officially meet! Then, our group headed straight to our first campsite of the trip, Gros Ventre. This famous campsite overlooks the stunning Teton Mountains, making it an ideal place to start the trip right. When we arrived, we got settled in: we went over basic guidelines, expectations, and goals for the upcoming two weeks. After setting up their tents, we headed into town to pick up warm, comforting pizza from the best pizza place in Jackson! However, we needed a view, so we jumped in our van, which we’ve deemed the “Litmo Limo,” and headed towards one of the most iconic spot in all of the Tetons: Mormon Row Barn. Here, these views of the Tetons was perfect for a sunset dinner, the first of many! We paired cookies with chats about what Moondance means to us as leaders and as students. This set us up to dive right into Moonup, one of the coolest and most important parts of Moondance! This time to reflect, share quotes, ask deep questions, and laugh at the day’s silly moments is truly so special. We completed this last activity by the National Elk Refuge before going back to camp to experience our first night camping together!
Day two was our first full day, and boy was it jam packed with fun and adventure. First, we munched on bagel breakfasts and packed lunch sandwiches. Shoutout to Rand and Elinor for being so helpful and packing up the U-haul early in the morning with us. Then, we headed to Snow King Mountain, Jackson’s hometown ski and adventure resort. First, we hit the ropes course, a set of treetop rope adventures built into the mountains. The views were incredible, soaring above the Tetons, Jackson, and the entire valley. The activity was no joke, giving us difficult challenges that tested our physical maneuvering and mental strength at such high distances. Rand led the team, easily and swiftly jumping through the tree challenges, as the rest of us followed. Alex joined Rand on the second course, completing a more difficult set of ropes with one being a “Tarzan” like leap into huge netting. The whole group successfully completed the course just in time for a lunch break on top of the mountain. We squeezed in some time to go on the Alpine Slide before getting set up to zipline. This activity encapsulated 3 ziplines, one of which is the steepest in all of North America. While nerve wracking, everyone stepped up to the challenge, including Ann Campbell, Hayward, and Eve who among others faced their fear of heights! After some leisure time to ride Snow King’s mountain coaster, our group headed straight to String lake. A local favorite swimming area, this place was perfect for a dip, one that all eleven students happily jumped in on! A HUGE shoutout to Whalen and Wrenn for being amazing Leaders of the Day (LOD) and cheffing up an amazing meal! They learned how to use our camp stove, cut certain veggies, and make a wonderful chicken taco bar for everyone. After another great dinner, our group headed to Gros Ventre for another great Moonup and bedtime under the stars. It was such an amazing day – everyone was shocked at how much fun and connection we developed by day 2!
Day three we hit the road, waking up early getting ready for our beautiful drive. We started off with a quick breakfast of yogurt and bagels. Sam stepped up to make a few bagels for those who were cleaning dishes, demonstrating a quality leadership skill of helping others which was fascinating to see. In addition to breakfast each student learned how to pack up and take down their own tents. After we were all packed up we hit the road. This drive started off with our group driving over the pass from Wyoming to Idaho, a spectacular view. Next leading us into the hills and desert of Idaho. After everyone was awake from a quick nap in the car we started to listen to music where every student sang and bonded with one another. We then landed in Boise, Idaho where many students tried In-N-Out Burger for the first time. This was a very nice stop to stretch our legs and get a nice meal. We then hit the road again filled with more singing. Shoutout to Molly for keeping up the good car energy with lots of song recommendations, entertaining funny stories, and lots of friendship bracelet making. Also the students partook in a trivia game to keep everyone engaged and to get the car ride to keep on moving. After moving through the deserts of Idaho we hit Payette National Forest, winding through the mountains next to the Payette River. After a long but smooth car ride we finally made it to Ponderosa State Park settling into our campsite. Our dinner was spectacular, spaghetti with red meat sauce, cooked up by two wonderful chefs Elinor and Rand. It was now long awaited bed time after a long day in the car.
Good morning, time to get the lines in the water! Our group woke up excited to learn how to fly fish. We started the day with a nice breakfast and packed up the van. Every student hopped into the van excited about learning a new skill. We met the guides nearby and we followed them to a nearby park. This is where each student got a rod in their hands. The learning experience started with the guides teaching our group how to set up the rod and string the line. Following we lined up and the outfitters started teaching everyone how to cast. Quickly we witnessed beginner fly fishers turn into pros. We learned many techniques for example how to roll cast, mend, and false cast, all essential mechanics to catch fish. After a nice morning session of learning it was time for lunch. Our group drove to a nearby park next to Payette lake to indulge in a nice self made sub lunch. These views were spectacular of the lake with mountains in the background. The guides then met us here and took us to a nearby river to get the lines in the water. When roving up we saw many fish getting everyone excited to start fishing. We strung up the rods and we were off. Watching each student use their newly developed skills from the morning was a special sight to see. Everyone scattered on the river and some caught their first fish with the fly rod. It was so incredible to witness Alex, Rand, and Whalen catch not just a fish but a big one. After multiple hours on the river we packed up our gear and headed to town. In town we all explored visiting some gift shops selling cool McCall and Idaho trinkets. When the shopping was done we walked to Frenchies for our local food stop. At this restaurant we were able to have a wonderful meal of Po Boys, chicken tenders, salads, and burgers that everyone enjoyed. When dinner was all done we walked to a local ice cream shop to get a sweet treat after a long day in the sun full of learning. Next we piled back into the van and explored our camp grounds. During this time we found a wonderful lookout over the lake to conclude a fantastic day. After seeing the sun set we discussed the big days ahead on the Salmon River. We are so excited for the next adventure!
It’s been such an amazing couple of days that’s felt like a lifetime of memories. Plus, it is only going to get better and more cohesive at each moment! We are all so grateful to be here and experience the Wild West together as a team. We will catch up soon, but for now, we have to get prepped for a huge next section of our trip; white water rafting! We will see you all soon, and thanks again!
Best,
Franny and Stephen
