Rounding Out with Rafting!

The kids woke up excited for our final activity: rafting! We had a slower morning this morning, so we hung out and enjoyed our breakfast of cinnamon rolls, sausage, and eggs. We packed up our clothes for our rafting trip and hopped in the car to meet up with our guides. Once we got to our rafting base, we packed all our stuff into dry bags, ate lunch, then got our wetsuits, life jackets, and helmets on and got ready to go. We had a bus ride to the top of the river, and then we were ready to be on the river! There was a heatwave coming through, so it made the water feel amazing. We split up the rafts into girls’ and boys’ rafts, which were quite fun for all the kids. We started down the river and hit some awesome rapids. It was Sloan’s first time rafting, and she did an amazing job. There was a spot where we could get out and swim in the glacier melt water, and all the kids did it. Even though the water was quite chilly, the hot air made it feel amazing. We continued on the river, playing games in the raft and crushing it on the rapids. Jane and Evelyn were all extra brave and “rode the bull,” which is sitting on the very front of the raft while we go through rapids, which was awesome. We even had a chance to hop out of the raft and float down one of the smaller rapids in the water, which was so cool. After a couple awesome hours of rafting, we were finally at our camping spot for the night. Tonight we were staying on a beautiful island in the middle of the river. Our raft guide set up a wonderful camp along with delicious snacks for us to enjoy once we got there. Everyone filled up on snacks, then went to set up tents. We came back down and played games, and before we knew it, it was time for dinner. While we ate, Coleman told stories that had us laughing so hard we could barely eat our dinner. The guides had prepared a fabulous dinner of pork, salmon, potatoes, garlic bread, salad, and a delicious brownie to top it off! We were all stuffed and then headed down to the beach to look at the incredible sunset. The view was so beautiful we could hardly believe it. After we had taken in the view we headed back up to camp to do moon-up. Elle and Jack M did a fantastic job leading us in moon-up before everyone headed back to their tents for some chatter and laughter before bed!
The raft guides woke us up in the morning with a full breakfast prepared! We packed up our stuff and headed over to grab breakfast. They cooked delicious French toast, bacon, fruit, and more. We all happily filled up on it before heading back out into the rafts. Today was a much more chill day, more of a float so we didn’t have to put on our wetsuits which was very nice. It was still hot outside so the water felt amazing. We floated down the river which was so enjoyable. We stopped at a beautiful waterfall and Sophia went completely under it which was awesome! Before we knew it we were at our put-out, so we paddled in and hoped out of the raft. We helped the guides pack up all the gear and had a very quick bus ride back to base. There we changed into dry clothes, had some snacks, and headed back to camp. Back at camp we ate lunch and rested for a bit before changing into sneakers for a hike. We had a very short drive to a beautiful hike. It was a steeper but shorter hike and the kids absolutely crushed it. Elle and Vaunne were awesome hiking in the middle of the pack doing great and keeping all the vibes up. When we got to the top no one could believe how beautiful it was! We sat around admiring the view and celebrated with some Canadian fizzy candies that Michael especially loved. We sat up top taking in the view and Fitz made us laugh with some great impressions! After a while we decided to head back down the trail and continue on our day. We hiked down to the bottom of the trail and the kids did so amazingly we surprised them with ice cream! We all died laughing as the kids attempted to eat their massive ice cream cones. Mac especially loved his ice cream and Jack M not being a fan of sweets enjoyed his big bag of chips! We headed back to camp and the kids showered while we cooked dinner. Tonight we did a build your own nacho bar which the kids were very excited about! After dinner, we sat around enjoying each other’s company and our last night together in Canada before getting ready for bed and heading into moon-up. Our amazing LODs Sophia and Fitz did a fantastic job as usual and it was a great way to close out the night.
We woke the kids up with a combination of their three favorite things for breakfast, cinnamon rolls, sprinkles, and chocolate chip pancakes with bacon and apple slices. The kids happily ate up their breakfast enjoying our final hours in beautiful Canada! We spent the rest of the morning throwing whipped cream up in the air and trying to catch it in our mouths. Coleman was so good at it and had us dying laughing. Mac also had us dying laughing although he wasn’t particularly great at it he had some awesome attempts. Once we cleaned up everything we packed it all up and headed for America. We headed to the border crossing and crossed from Canada back into America seamlessly! The kids cheered loudly as we played American music when we crossed! By then it was lunch time so we decided to celebrate our return to America we stopped at Chick-fil-A! The kids were beyond excited and happily ate their meals. Jack M and some of the other boys all got delicious milkshakes! We stopped at Goodwill to get some fun outfits for the kids for our banquet dinner tonight. Elle was rocking a full Kobe Bryant outfit while Vaunne and Sloan had a hilarious hodgepodge going on. Once all the kids had their outfits we went straight to our dinner place. We ate at a small family-owned burger restaurant. The kids enjoyed their dinners in their ridiculous outfits. Michael had a milkshake that he said was delicious! It was a perfect banquet dinner to end our trip. We continued on our drive to our campsite. Evelyn helped with picking songs to play to keep the vibes up and she killed it! After many songs sung at the top of our lungs, we were at our campsite for the night. We got out the kids’ sleeping stuff and did moon up led by our final LOD, Jane who did such an amazing job. We cowboy camped outside for our last night and the kids chatted for a while before heading to bed for a shorter night of sleep before our early airport morning!
We had quite the early morning but the kids were so on top of it they made it so easy for us all. They packed up their stuff and we hopped in the car blasting their favorite songs one final time on the way to the airport. Once we got to the airport we rearranged their duffle bags and packed up all their stuff. Once everyone was ready came the bittersweet goodbye. Everyone was so sad to leave but so overwhelmed with happiness from the trip. As the kids headed off in different directions for their flights they reflected on the quote from Moonup last night, “How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard”.
We have absolutely loved getting the chance to get to know your amazing kids over these past two weeks. Each one of them is absolutely amazing in their own way. We feel overwhelmed with gratitude to have had the chance to be their leaders and watch them learn and grow as well as have an amazing time during this trip. Thank you so much for sharing these incredible kids with us, it was truly our pleasure.

Surfing the Waves!

The kids woke up full of excitement because today we were going fishing! We had English muffins, bacon, eggs, and cherries for breakfast. We didn’t have to be on the boat until later in the morning so the kids hung out in their enos laughing and spending quality time together. When it was time to go fishing we hopped into the van and headed to the pier. We split up into two fishing boats and headed out into the water. One boat was trolling and the other one was jigging. We drove around for a while enjoying being on the water and all the incredible views. Our guides yelled for us to come to the front of the boat and when we did we saw a whale that was 50 feet away from us. We saw it surface a couple times and do some tail flips which was incredibly cool. The guides said this was the closest they had ever seen a whale. Evelyn and Vaunne stood on the front for a while watching the whale in awe. Before we knew it there was a fish on the line. Mac reeled it in and it was a big king salmon! The guides measured it at 70 cm so we could keep it. It was an awesome catch and Mac did a great job! Before we knew it Fitz was yelling from the other boat that he had caught a big one too! Fitz reeled in a Koho Salmon which we could also keep.
The jigging boat caught lots of other little fish throughout the day. Jack O was holding the record with 15 salmon!! The trolling boat continued driving around catching some but not many keepers. We enjoyed sitting on the boat soaking up the sunshine and listening to music. Michael was quite invested in who was going to catch the biggest fish and it ended up being, Sloan, who reeled in the biggest catch of the day, a 72cm koho salmon, which we could also keep! We pulled back into the dock and the kids took some pictures with their fish before the guides prepared them for us to cook later. Once we were back on the pier we grabbed some delicious ice cream to celebrate a successful day of fishing! The kids exchanged stories from their boats while they ate up their ice cream. Once everyone was finished we got back in the van and headed back to camp. The kids hung out on the beach and in their enos. Jane and Sophia hung out on the beach laughing and soaking up the sun! We started preparing the fish for dinner, Mac and Fitz were awesome at deboning their catch. We cooked the fish in little nuggets in tinfoil with lemon and butter which turned out absolutely delicious. For dinner we did rice bowls with the salmon, broccoli, edamame, and teriyaki chicken for those that didn’t love the salmon. After dinner it had started to rain so we did moon-up under a tarp we set up so everyone could stay dry! Our amazing LODs Vaunne and Jack M did a great job leading it even in the rain! The kids were tired from a big day of fishing and fun so they headed to bed!
When we woke up it was still raining so we had a quicker morning. We were heading to another campsite today so we had to pack up camp. The kids were awesome and packed up all their stuff and tents so quickly. We had muffins for breakfast and headed to our ferry terminal. It was a short ferry ride and we continued on with our drive. We stopped at Tim Hortons which is a Canadian restaurant that is delicious! The kids got breakfast bagels and donuts, they said it was delicious and we were so glad we stopped there. It wouldn’t be a trip to Canada without it! We continued on our drive until our next stop which was at a country store called Goats on the Roof, which actually had goats on the roof! The kids pet the goats, for ice cream and goodies from the store. Coleman made us all laugh as he showed us his purchase which was just prosciutto. After everyone was full from lunch and their snacks we headed back in the car and kept driving to our campsite. Before we knew it we were approaching the town of Tofino where we were going to stay for the next couple of days. The kids played while we got dinner ready, tonight we had personal pizzas that the kids got to make. Our wonderful LODs Jack O and Elle, led a great moon up before everyone headed to bed to rest up for our activities tomorrow.
The kids woke up super excited for the day today because we were paddle boarding and surfing today! For breakfast, we had delicious French toast sticks with bacon and a berry compote and maple syrup of course! Once everyone was ready we did a quick walk on the beach to meet up with our paddle boarding guides. We all put on our wetsuits to keep us warm even though it felt very nice outside the water was still pretty chilly. We played some hilarious warm-up games and then the kids hopped in the water! We paddled all around and to a nice open spot in the ocean where we played some more games. Last man standing was a favorite of the kids, Jane and Sophia were the winners of that game! We paddled back to the beach and hoped out of the water and out of our wetsuits. We walked back to camp and had beef quesadillas for lunch still laughing about memories from paddle boarding. After lunch, we drove to a different beach to meet our surfing guides! We put our wetsuits on, sunscreened up, grabbed our boards, and headed to the water! The guides gave a demo on how to do it and then it was the kids turn to try! Right off the bat Michael was killing it, catching awesome waves and riding them in! We were so impressed with Coleman’s bravery in surfing, not just waiting for a wave he liked but taking any wave which led to some awesome surfs and some pretty hilarious wipeouts. But regardless of how it went we could always count on him to pop up out of the water with a huge smile on his face and go do it again! The waves were beautiful and the sun was shining bright. It was a perfect day for surfing. After surfing we dried off and changed into our clothes and headed into the town of Tofino. It is an adorable tiny surf town with lots of shops and food places, making it perfect for a town day! The kids got to explore in groups a little bit before we all regrouped for dinner. The boys spent most of their time at a local candy shop and the girls walked around some of the local shops. There was also a sting completion inhaling in the park so that was fun to watch for a little while. For dinner, we surprised the kids with getting takeout from a local taco restaurant that is delicious. The kids placed their orders and we got the food to go and sat on the pier enjoying the amazing view and delicious food. After everyone was done we headed back to camp and made a s’mores dip for dessert! The kids loved it and as we ate it they told hilarious stories that had everyone dying laughing! After everyone laughed so hard their stomachs hurt we decided it was probably a good time to go into moon up. Sophia and Coleman were our amazing LODs and did a great job leading moon up to finish out such an amazing night.
The kids woke up with the same excitement as the day before, ready to get back on the water. For breakfast we had sprinkle and chocolate chip pancakes with eggs. The kids love pancakes so we were so glad we could cook them for them again! We did the same thing as yesterday walking to the beach to meet our guides and changing into our wetsuits. We played lots of warm-up games and had some friendly girls vs. boys completions. The kids hopped on their boards and we paddled out to a large area with lots of sea kelp. The guides told us to pull some kelp up and there were crabs on them. The kids went crazy pulling up the kelp and throng to spot the crabs hidden in there. Jack O found a huge crab that he showed everyone! Evelyn impressed us all and made us laugh with her tolerance of the chilly water as well as her paddle boarding skills! We headed out of the water and back up to camp where we had bacon grilled cheese for lunch with tomato soup and veggies. We turned the radio broadcast on for the kids to listen to the World Cup. After everyone ate lunch we got in the car and headed back to the other beach for our second day of surfing. Once everyone had their wetsuits and boards we headed into the water with our guides. The waves were a bit rougher today which made for some awesome surf. Jack M was crushing it today we were so proud of him! The kids were doing amazing especially our San Diego girls Elle and Vaunne who were naturals! Once we wrapped up surfing we headed back into town for the kids to have more time to enjoy the beautiful little town! After a few hours in town, we headed back to camp and the kids got to shower! While they were showering we set up a huge charcuterie board for dinner. Since most of the kids had decided to eat in town we thought it would be perfect for tonight. Thankfully we were right and the kids loved it! Many of them made comments about how much their moms would love this meal 😄! After everyone was full we headed down to the beach where the kids played a boys vs girls game of volleyball. It was an absolutely stunning night and the sunset was incredible. The kids played until they were exhausted and the beach was so beautiful we decided to do moon-up right there. Vaunne and Mac did a splendid job of leading moon up before everyone headed to bed for a great night of sleep.
Today we woke up pretty early because we had a travel day. We all packed up camp then grabbed breakfast of muffins, bagels, and grapes before hopping in the car to go to our final ferry of the trip. The kids love this two-hour ferry and we’re so excited we got to go on it today. They hung out together playing games and enjoying the ferry ice cream and before we knew it we were at our terminal! Er got off the ferry and continued our drive to our campsite. The kids were so helpful and easy today it made it such a smooth travel day! When we got to our campsite we all sat in a circle chatting and enjoying our beautiful campsite for the night. Everyone then set up camp and we started to cook dinner. Tonight we had chicken pesto pasta with green beans and garlic bread. The kids loved this meal especially the garlic bread. After dinner the kids ran around playing volleyball and football before tiring themselves out and settling into moon up. Our amazing LODs Jack M and Sloan did such a great job leading us in moon up before we headed to bed! The kids headed to their tents chatting about how excited they are to start our final activity tomorrow!
We have had an absolutely fantastic time so far. Will, Roxie, and I want to thank you so much for sharing your amazing kids with us. Even though it is only the fifth day we know each one of these kids is so special. We can not wait to spend the rest of the time on this trip with them and get to watch them learn and grow! Our group is amazing and it would not be the same without every kid! We are so proud of the kids for all they have accomplished in these first days and can’t wait to see all they do in the rest of the trip!
Will, Roxie, and I have had a fabulous time getting to know your kids more and really getting the chance to bond with them. We have had the most amazing days full of laughter love and joy. The kids have really pushed themselves out of their comfort zones in activities and demonstrate kindness and selflessness in the group. We continue to be so proud of every one of these kids as well as so fortunate to get the chance to spend some of our summer with them! We are looking forward to our last couple days and enjoying every second!

Cookies + Campfires in Canada!

We were so glad everyone’s flights got in on time, and no one had any issues! As the kids arrived we hung out at the airport playing games, eating snacks, and beginning to get to know each other. Once everyone arrived we got our stuff together and headed in the van. We drove up to northern Washington where we camped for the night. The van ride there was full of cheerful get-to-know-you chatter. We could tell right off the bat that this was going to be an amazing group and we already felt so lucky! We stopped on the drive to pick up some pizza for dinner and drove to a beautiful park to eat it. The kids were able to run around and get some energy out before we all sat down tighter to enjoy our first meal of the trip. After everyone was full on pizza and veggies we hopped back in the car and finished our short way to go left to our campsite. We arrived and the kids did an awesome job setting up tents and getting the stuff they needed together. We did our first moon-up and eveyone was tired from a long day of travel so we headed to bed, excited to start our Canadian adventure tomorrow!
We woke the kids up early and helped them pack up their stuff so we could get a head start on our travel day. We had yogurt, nectarines, and muffins for breakfast before we headed in the van and began our travel day. Se has a seamless crossing across the border and into Cannada! We had a good amount of driving today but it makes for a perfect activity because the kids really get to know each other! By the time we got to our campsite, everyone had become fast friends you would never have guessed that they met the day before! We got to our campsite for the next couple of nights and the kids set up their tents and we got to cooking dinner. Tonight we had a build your own quesadilla bar with beans, onions, peppers and chicken. The kids all picked what they wanted on theirs and we cooked them up! We sat in a circle eating dinner and talking about what we were excited for about our trip! Before we knew it it was getting dark so we cleaned up dinner and headed down to the beach. It was a beautiful sunset and we all sat taking in the view and skipping rocks. Jack M was especially skilled at skipping rocks and was teaching his skills to others. When everyone was ready we setterled down for moon up lead which was led by our wonderful LODs (leader of the day) who were chosen last night, Jane and Coleman. They did an amazing job and really set the tone for all the other kids to follow in their moon ups! We headed to bed, excited to start our first activity tomorrow!
The kids woke up full of energy for our first activity of rock climbing. For breakfast we had English muffins, sausage, eggs, yogurt, and oranges ready when the kids woke up. They got ready for the day, ate breakfast and we got in the van to head to our rock climbing spot. We met our awesome guides and started the quick hike up to the climbing rock. The kids eagerly started climbing the rock and right away they were doing an amazing job. Fitz and Evelyn were crushing it off the bat! The kids had so much fun climbing and belaying for each other. After a day of climbing we headed back down to our van. Our guides were so knowledgeable about the forest we were in and were able to tell us so much about the plants around us and even got some found some wild berries for us to eat! We headed back to camp and the kids showered while we got some more snacks ready. Once everyone was clean and full we all sat around playing games. The group’s favorite was Fishbowl, where Jack O had us all dying laughing with his acting skills. For dinner tonight we had fried rice which was a fan favorite for the kids. Vaunne and Mac were so helpful doing the dishes and helping clean up. We got ready for bed and moon-up. Our amazing LODs Sophia and Michael, led us in moon up and they did a great job! Everyone was tired from our first activity and we headed to bed.
The kids slept great and we woke up excited for another great day of climbing. Today we were going to do a 75-foot repel and some harder climbs! The kids were all super excited. We had English muffins with sausage and eggs before getting ready for the day and heading to our rock climbing spot. Half the group started on the repel while the other group started climbing before we switched. The first repel crew was awesome! Michael and Elle were especially killing it. The kids climbing also did amazingly. Sophia impressed us all by completing the hardest climb. Even our guides were impressed and couldn’t believe she wasn’t a seasoned climber. Sloan was so awesome and completed some awesome climbs even though heights aren’t her favorite thing! The kids continued to climb and repel having a blast! We were so proud of Evelyn for her determination on these climbs, not giving up until she got them down! After we headed back to camp the kids showered again while we got a surprise ready for them! We surprised them with Coke floats to celebrate how amazing they did on rock climbing. The kids ran around tossing the football getting some of that sugar energy out before we all sat in a circle laughing and telling stories. Before we knew it it was time to cook dinner, we had burgers, fries, mac n cheese, corn, and watermelon! The kids loved this meal especially Mac! After dinner we headed into Moon Up led by our incredible LODs Sloan and Mac. Everyone headed to bed, proud of themselves for all they had accomplished during our first activity.
Today was a more flexible day so the kids were able to sleep in more! When they woke up we had chocolate chip and sprinkle pancakes along with fresh strawberries, sausage bacon, and of course authentic Canadian maple syrup! Coleman was sure to load his pancakes up with maple syrup to get the best flavor possible! After everyone was full we packed up camp and got in the car to head to our next campsite. It was a super drive along with a very short ferry. Instead of going straight to our campsite we went to our trailhead for our hike today. Jane and Sophia were killing it in front of the group! When we got to the top no one could believe the view. It was so incredible. We sat up there eating our lunch, chatting and just taking in the view. After the hike, we headed to our campsite. It is a beautiful campsite right on the water so of course as soon as camp was set up we went to the beach. Jack O was quite brave being the first to jump into the chilly but very refreshing water! We all hung out on the beach until it was time for dinner. Tonight we had protein pasta with red sauce and meatballs and for sides we had green beans and garlic bread. It was a great meal and everyone was stuffed! Since it was such a beautiful evening and we were on the water we decided we had to go for a swim! Everyone got in which was so awesome. The water was chilly but it did feel good especially on our legs after today’s hike. Jack M and Michael were especially bracing the cold as they swam all around! We continued to play around in the water and Elle and Vaunne led the group in a “dunk wave” where we all held hands and one by one dunked under the water. It ended with lots of laughter and what a cool opportunity to swim in the ocean off of Canada! We hopped out of the water, changed into dry clothes and made some tea to warm us up. Apparently the swim had gotten the kids’ appetites up again so we suprised the a ith a skillet cookie for dessert! The kids all dug in and were in agreement that it was quite delicious. We headed to the beach to do moon up, tonight our spectacular LODs were Evelyn and Fitz and they did an amazing job! Everyone was tired from a big day of fun so we headed to bed. About half of the kids headed back to their tent while the other half decided to sleep in Enos tonight!

We heard from our leaders that the group has landed safely! The trip is off to a great start, and we cannot wait to hear more stories from their adventure.
