As the final leg of our two-week California adventure began, we said goodbye to the towering presence of Mount Shasta and drove south, bound for the American River. Spirits were high in the van as some kids napped, others DJ’d, and everyone was buzzing with excitement for the rafting that lay ahead. The winding drive through Northern California’s forests eventually led us to our next campsite, tucked near the river, where the energy only grew stronger. That night, we added a tasty twist to our travels: a cooking competition.
With burners fired up and teams ready, the campsite turned into a field kitchen. Teams brought their best game, and no dish disappointed. Ava, Reese, and Alex led their groups with creativity and skill, producing standout dishes: flavorful Korean noodles, juicy chicken sliders, and hearty spaghetti and meatballs. Judges (your lovely leaders) had a tough time picking a favorite because everything was genuinely delicious. The evening ended with full bellies and proud chefs. It was one of those meals where the food was amazing, but the shared laughter and teamwork made it even better.
The next morning, we woke early and geared up for our first day on the water, the South Fork of the American River. This stretch, filled with Class II and III rapids, was the perfect setting to learn the ropes of rafting. Everyone got a chance to paddle, fall into rhythm with their crew, and understand how to navigate the currents. It was thrilling, wet, and the ideal warm-up for the bigger rapids waiting for us the next day. The day also gave us a chance to build deeper trust in our boats and with each other.
Back at camp that evening, energy levels were still sky-high. What started as a casual toss of a ball quickly escalated into an epic volleyball game led by Laurel. What followed was a friendly, but fiercely, competitive match that somehow turned into a 200-point game, with the entire group getting involved. Players were cheering and diving in the grass as the sun set behind the trees. The game was less about scorekeeping and more about soaking up one of our last nights together with nonstop action and laughter.
To cap off the night, we launched into some of our favorite evening games, beginning with a high-energy round of “Ninja,” the fast-paced reflex game that brought out everyone’s inner warrior. Bennett, Chloe, and Cooper were the standouts, dodging and striking with expert precision, and earning plenty of wins and laughs. Next came the dancing challenge, “Shake and Pop,” where everyone showed off their best (and silliest) moves. Colleen stole the show with her bold, enthusiastic dancing that had everyone clapping and joining in. By the end of the night, it felt like our campsite had turned into a dance floor.
The following morning, we faced the grand finale of our rafting experience: the Middle Fork of the American River. Known for its steep canyon and powerful rapids, this 16-mile stretch featured intense Class III and IV sections, including the famous Tunnel Chute. Our guides led us through a mix of roaring rapids and calm stretches where we could take in the awe-inspiring granite walls and clear mountain water. Everyone rose to the challenge. working as tight teams, paddling with determination, and cheering each other through the wildest sections. By the time we reached the take-out point, we were tired, soaked, and glowing with pride.
With our river days behind us, we headed to Sacramento for our final night. The car wash experience was led by Hunter manning the hose with authority—and mischief. What started as a practical chore quickly turned into a water war, with Hunter gleefully soaking unsuspecting friends. Soon, everyone was laughing, dripping wet, and feeling the kind of carefree happiness that comes with being outside, together, after two incredible weeks.
As the sun dipped low, Lawson sparked one more spontaneous burst of fun by organizing a lively game of ultimate frisbee in the parking lot. Shoes came off, teams were picked, and the game was on. Even though we were only hours from leaving, the energy hadn’t faded a bit. The frisbee flew across the asphalt as players sprinted, passed, and dove with the same excitement they’d had on day one. It was another one of those beautiful, unscripted moments where the group just clicked.
That next evening, we all came together for our final send-off: a banquet dinner at a Mexican restaurant, made even better by our wild Goodwill outfits. Each person had picked something ridiculous, colorful, or over-the-top, and the results were hilarious. Griffin won unofficial “Best Dressed” for his ultra-relaxed, vacation-ready ensemble that perfectly captured the laid-back vibe of the evening. With tacos and enchiladas on the table and music in the background, the night turned into a celebration of everything we’d shared.
After dinner, we gathered in our final Moon Up, a circle filled with reflection, gratitude, and heartfelt words. Hayes and Kati led us beautifully—guiding the group into a space of open compliments and deeper conversations. It was a powerful ending: sincere, emotional, and meaningful. People spoke about new friendships, personal growth, favorite memories, and what the trip had meant to them.
As we packed our bags the next morning and said our goodbyes, it was clear that this trip had been so much more than just a tour of California. It had been a journey of adventure, challenge, friendship, and fun. What an amazing group you guys were, we miss and love all y’all already!!!

Our Mt. Shasta adventure began with a scenic drive from Yosemite National Park to Northern California. The transition from Yosemite’s iconic granite walls to the towering peak of Mt. Shasta gave us a renewed sense of anticipation for what lay ahead. As we neared the base of the mountain, the air cooled, and the summit of Shasta, draped in patches of snow and cloud, loomed ever larger on the horizon.
The next morning, we parked the van and began our ascent toward base camp. Packs loaded with gear and food, we hiked roughly three miles in, gaining elevation steadily until we reached our campsite at 8,500 feet. The terrain gradually shifted from dirt trails to rocky alpine slopes, and each step brought us closer to the towering giant above. Spirits were high, and everyone felt the thrill of being out in the wilderness, surrounded by friends and the looming promise of a summit attempt.
We reached base camp in the early evening and quickly set up tents. As the sun dipped lower we gathered for an early dinner, sharing stories and laughter as we fueled up for what was to come. With full stomachs and heavy eyelids, we slipped into our sleeping bags. Everyone knew what the next day had in store, and the 2:00 AM wake-up call lingered in the back of our minds as we drifted off to sleep.
At 2:00 AM, headlamps flickered on like fireflies in the dark. We layered up against the cold, strapped on crampons, and began the long, grueling ascent up Mt. Shasta’s slopes. The early hours were quiet, filled with only the crunch of snow beneath our boots and the occasional murmur of encouragement. As we climbed, the world slowly transformed around us. Between 10,000 and 11,000 feet, the first signs of dawn painted the sky in shades of orange and pink. Reese, Ava, and Colleen found a stunning rock outcropping to pause at, enjoying the sunrise with candy bars in hand — a small but memorable moment of joy amid the challenge.
The mountain seemed to stretch endlessly upward, but we kept moving, fueled by determination and camaraderie. After nearly eight hours of climbing, the summit finally came into view. Chloe, Laurel, Alex, Hayes, Cooper, and Bennett were among the group to reach the top. The wind was biting, but the sense of achievement was overwhelming. At over 14,000 feet, the view was nothing short of spectacular, a 360-degree panorama of Northern California, dotted with lakes, forests, and distant peaks.
The descent began with a brief rest near 13,000 feet, where a few of us grabbed a much-needed nap sprawled out on warm rocks under the sun. The way down was significantly faster thanks to some adventurous boot skiing down the glaciers, laughter echoing across the slopes as we slid our way back toward base camp.
The following morning, after a deep sleep under the stars, we packed up camp and made the final hike back to the van. Though our legs were sore and our packs still heavy, there was a lightness to our steps, a satisfaction that came from achieving something physically and mentally demanding.
Back in the little town of Mt. Shasta, we transitioned from alpine adventurers to relaxed tourists. The afternoon was spent browsing local gift shops, picking out stickers, souvenirs, and snacks. Later, we made our way to Lake Siskiyou for one last dip before the journey home. The water was refreshingly cold, and the surrounding pines and views of Mt. Shasta made for a perfect setting to unwind.
Of course, the lake fun wouldn’t have been complete without a bit of competition. Griffin and Hunter took the lead in a spontaneous log rolling contest, drawing cheers and laughter from everyone watching. Not to be outdone, Lawson and Katie got a beach volleyball game going by the water, rounding up players and showing off some serious team spirit.
As the sun began to set, we wrapped up our trip with a relaxed dinner in town. Ice cream cones in hand, we sat outside and watched the last light fade from the sky, tired but happy. The trip thus far has been a mix of challenge and play, wilderness and bonding. The kind of adventure that stays with you.
Looking back, the Mt. Shasta expedition wasn’t just about reaching the summit. It was about the team effort, the early morning starts, the shared candy bars at 11,000 feet, and the post-hike swims. It was about the little things: the inside jokes, the frozen fingers, the moments of silence under the stars, and the bursts of laughter echoing off the slopes. Most importantly, it was about the people who made it all unforgettable.

Our four-day adventure through Yosemite’s Hetch Hetchy Loop began with a sense of excitement and anticipation that could hardly be contained. We packed up our backpacks, loaded the vans, and hit the road, ready to immerse ourselves in the beauty and challenge of the backcountry. Spirits were high from the very beginning, and as we entered the park, it was clear this trip would be something special.
On Day 1, Laurel and Bennett stepped up as our fearless Leaders of the Day (LODs). They confidently navigated our group through the initial stretch of the loop, setting a strong tone of leadership and enthusiasm. Though we arrived to our first campsite later than planned, the energy never wavered. Our cook crew, headed by Laurel, whipped up a delicious dinner of taco bowls, fueling our tired bodies and lifting everyone’s mood even more. Meanwhile, Cooper took the initiative to start a fire, and soon we were all gathered around the crackling flames. Our first Moonup of the trip was held under the stars, with everyone sharing their thoughts and excitement for what was to come.
Day 2 began with another round of packing and preparation as we set out for Lake Vernon. Our LODs for the day were the dynamic twin duo, Cooper and Chloe, whose leadership brought a fun and energetic pace to the hike. The trail was filled with scenic vistas and the promise of cool water ahead. After a rewarding trek, we arrived at the pristine shores of Lake Vernon—a true backcountry gem. The group wasted no time diving into the refreshing water, swimming around, playing in the river, and basking like lizards on sun-warmed rocks. Bennet and Lawson led an exploratory group along the riverbanks, discovering hidden spots and leading impromptu adventures through the shallows.
That night, Katie and Colleen transformed our campsite into a festive feast, serving a creative backcountry version of Thanksgiving dinner. The meal featured mashed potatoes, corn, chicken, and gravy. This was a delight that left everyone full and satisfied. A warm fire followed, complete with s’mores, laughter, and another meaningful Moonup. We celebrated the success of our day and the camaraderie forming between us all.
Day 3 brought our biggest physical challenge yet: a 10-mile trek to Rancheria Falls. The group rose to the occasion, energized and determined. Katie and Hunter took the reins as LODs and kept morale high, even as the terrain grew steeper and the sun beat down. Hunter led us confidently through valleys, up inclines, and down switchbacks, with unwavering energy. Along the way, Ava and Reese took time to pause and admire the stunning wildflower meadows—a well-earned reminder to slow down and soak in the surroundings.
When we finally arrived at Rancheria Falls, the reward was immediate. Cascading water thundered down smooth granite, forming perfect swimming holes beneath. The scene was almost too good to be true. Without hesitation, Hayes and Griffin leaped into the water, going straight under the falls and setting the tone for everyone else to follow. The afternoon was spent swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the pure, simple joy of a cold dip after a long day’s hike.
Dinner that night came courtesy of the boys—Hayes, Griffin, Lawson, Cooper, and Hunter—who cooked up their now-infamous creation: “Murder Mac.” Cooked over the fire with energy and enthusiasm, it was a cheesy, hearty pasta dish that quickly disappeared as hungry hikers devoured every bite. It was the perfect end to a tough but deeply rewarding day. We closed the night with a Moonup led by our LODs, reflecting on the beauty of the day and the strength of the team.
Day 4 began before the sun was even up. We had an early wake-up call and hit the trail under a star-filled sky. The world was quiet, and our boots crunched softly along the path as we began the final leg of our journey. Our LODs, Alex and Lawson, brought calm and steady leadership to the group as we hiked through the cool morning air. A breathtaking sunrise painted the sky as we trekked out,
casting golden light on granite peaks and illuminating the final miles of our loop.
Alex took the lead and brought us all safely back to the car, completing our backpacking journey with strength and grace. The sense of accomplishment was real. Four days of hiking, swimming, laughing, and growing together had bonded us in ways we didn’t expect.
After packing up and celebrating a successful loop, we drove into Yosemite Valley to take in the iconic landmarks: the towering face of El Capitan, the thundering cascade of Yosemite Falls, and the majestic dome of Half Dome watching over the valley. Though our bodies were tired, our hearts were full. The sheer magnitude of the landscape we’d explored left a lasting impression.
From leadership roles to cook crews, from trail conversations to river swims, every person contributed something unique to the experience. We learned from each other, supported one another through the tough climbs, and celebrated every moment of joy together. The Hetch Hetchy Loop challenged us physically and mentally, but it also gave us the chance to step outside our comfort zones, to reconnect with nature, and to truly live in the moment.
