Hello one last time from South Africa! We are so sad to see our trip come to an end but have cherished the past two weeks we were able to share with your girls. The final leg of our trip at Mabula Game Reserve was an incredible way to spend our last few days together filled with many Big Five sightings, wildlife conservation activities, breathtaking sunsets, and endless laughs around the campsite.
Our first day at Mabula started off strong with a shirley temple welcome drink and sighting of four rhinos (including one baby) right outside the fence!! As the girls went to put their bags away in the tents, Clio was even able to capture an amazing photo of them through their window. After admiring the rhinos and the beautiful camp site, we gathered for lunch– build your own burgers and fries– and chatted about all of the animals we were hoping to see over our next few days. Before leaving for our first game drive, many of the girls prepared by braiding each other’s hair, making sure it would stay picture perfect for all of the photos to come on the safari cart. India showed off her fishtail braid skills while Caroline W, Caroline P, and Stokely got a braiding train going. Finally, we were ready to set off on our drive and after 20 minutes of riding, we spotted 7 lions laying together in the bush!! We watched them sleep for a few minutes when suddenly the big male lion got up and walked right in front of our cars. The girls were speechless as each lion followed their leader past our vehicle. Once we were finished with the sighting, we had a quick briefing from Nicky, Greater Mabula assistant manager, to learn more about the portion of Mabula that contains the lions and why they are controlling the population. Curious about the reserve, Zoe, Stokely, and Virginia all asked the reserve manager questions about his work and the history of the lions there.
We did not think the day could get any better when we were just about to pull over for our sunset stop, and our guides got word of an elephant sighting. Quickly, we sped through the savannah, hoping to catch the elephants before the sun went down. As we got close to the sound of falling trees, the cars pulled off to the side and we waited patiently for the elephants to come out of hiding. Finally, right as the sun set, the elephants crossed the road right in front of our carts, and we were amazed yet again by the breathtaking animals. After the long day, we drove back to camp for dinner and MJ’s safari car sang the entire way home. We were welcomed back with hot chocolate and soon after ate bolognese pasta for dinner. Our LODs India and Meredith ended our night with Moonup and we all went to bed tired from the long, exciting day we just had.
After our first night at Mabula, our group had a full slate of activities ahead. Caroline W. had a hot chocolate and coffee combination to start off her day as we set off to track cheetahs! After some searching, we saw a pair walking across a dam but could not get a close enough look at them, so we decided to try for later. We stopped for a brief break, where Kiersi awed us with a walking handstand and a back walkover. Virginia kept her energy up by inventing her own workout class, which gathered onlookers but no participants. That afternoon, we stopped by another dam for a picnic lunch, but not before we saw a savannah full of giraffes, white rhinos, and impalas! It truly looked like a scene straight out of “The Lion King.” At lunch, we enjoyed chicken and beef wraps with fresh fruit, potatoes, and mini lemon tarts and apple pastries to finish. Shortly after wrapping up lunch, we set back out for the cheetahs, but this time with more success. We had the opportunity to walk over to them, standing about 100 feet from where they rested. It was truly amazing to watch these magnificent animals from such a close spot.
After spotting the cheetahs, we began another game drive. On this one, we spotted many of the various antelope South Africa has to offer – impala, wildebeest, blessbucks, oryx, and kudu. We stopped again for some snacks, which consisted of sausage roll-ups and some of the best banana bread we have ever tasted. Just before sunset, Helen’s car rolled up on a pack of wild dogs – the first sighting of the trip! Some of the girls in their cart discussed jobs they want in the future, and the group brainstormed ideas for Virginia’s eventual entrepreneurial endeavours. Meanwhile in Luke’s cart, Lucy decided a blast from the past was necessary and requested “Baby” by Justin Bieber to be played on our way back to camp. That night, we ate pasta with either chicken or beef with a side of salad and rolls. At Moonup, we discussed some of the recent shows we have been watching and some of our nerves about returning home, and went to bed shortly after to cap-off our action-packed day.
We woke up early on the 4th of July to Caroline P, Stokely, and Lucy belting “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen as we moved from tent to tent making sure everyone was awake. Although we are not able to traditionally celebrate the American holiday, their musical number got spirits high for the day! After a quick breakfast, we set out for our first activity, the hornbill experience, and learned all about the endangered animal and their ideal habitat conditions. As we were leaving, we were surprised by a giraffe which brought energy levels back up after the very early morning. Once back at the lodge, the camp manager gave us some red, white, and blue face paint so that we could dress up for the rhino darting and afternoon game drive. Caroline W mastered a firework design while India meticulously painted American flags on many of the girls’ cheeks. After an hour of painting and taking pictures with our new looks, we finally set out for one of our most exciting adventures yet: rhino darting! We drove quickly through the bush to catch the rhino right as it came down and were amazed by the speed of the veterinarian’s work. Zoe and Caroline W placed chips into the horn after Meredith drilled a hole for them and Stokely and Lucy got to help replace the tracking device on the rhino. On top of that, we were able to perform different injections, disinfect some of the ticks on the rhino, and measure oxygen levels. It was an amazing experience and we were so proud of the initiative each girl took to participate in some way! We finished our night with another sunset game drive, followed by a quick snack stop where dried mango was devoured by our group. One back at camp, we enjoyed a lovely buffet dinner followed by Moonup led by our LODs Panthea and Zoe.
Following our darting day, we continued to interact with the rhinos as we had the chance to feed them up close! The girls piled into a truck a few at a time and tossed out hay for these beautiful beasts. After the rhinos were good and fed, it was time to feed ourselves as we stopped for a brunch picnic upon a hill. Stokely spotted a Mozambican spitting cobra from a safe distance after we wrapped up lunch, then we headed back to camp for some downtime. After giving the girls some time to reflect on the trip, we went off for our final evening game drive. Meredith cleverly spotted the rhino we had darted from the day before by noting its markings on its left side! Additionally, we came across three ground hornbills! It was fascinating to witness these magnificent birds that we had talked so much about. Following our game drive, we arrived back at our lodging to find another surprise: boma dinner! We ate braai, a traditional South African barbecue, and sat around a campfire. After a dessert of chocolate cake, we enjoyed a Moonup led by Meredith and Kiersi where we discussed some of our favorite parts of the trip and the areas we have grown throughout. Instead of going to bed, the girls sat around the fire for a while where India played a few songs on guitar, strumming out “By and By” by Caamp and “Yellow” by Coldplay. It was a beautiful way to close out our final night all together underneath a beautiful African sky full of stars.
In order to make the most of our final day in South Africa, we woke up extra early in order to find the lions once more. Luckily, we spotted all seven peacefully sleeping and were able to end our safari on a high note! Our guides then took us to a lookout spot for some coffee and hot chocolate before heading back to the lodge for breakfast. Again, all of the dried mango was taken down and many of the girls mentioned how they were going to buy more in the airport. At camp, we had our final meal in the bush– a delicious brunch with french toast, pancakes, eggs, hashbrowns, avocado toast, and more. Full from our meal, we finished packing up, said our final goodbyes to Mabula, the camp manager, and our guides Kamo and MJ, and set off for the airport. We arrived at the airport and had our final meal together where it all started: the City Lodge. Afterwards, we stopped for gelato and had our final Moonup led by Luke and Helen. We discussed our biggest takeaways from this trip and said some very heartfelt goodbyes before the girls made their way through security.
To conclude, we would like to express our gratitude for the joy your girls have brought into our lives. We are proud of the growth we have witnessed over the last several weeks. Though none of the girls knew each other prior to this trip, they all formed some of the most beautiful friendships we have ever seen. They have truly changed our lives with the joy and experiences they brought to this trip. We end our trip in sadness because of all the smiles and wonderful memories we have made along the way. Thank you all so much for sharing your girls with us, and we cannot wait to see all the great things they will accomplish!
Best, Helen and Luke

Hello again!!! We just arrived back in South Africa and are SO excited to share with you all of the amazing things we have done these past few days! We started our journey to Mozambique bright and early, leaving Little Mongena while the stars were still out and shining. Thankfully, we had a few hours in the car ride to the airport to catch up on a little sleep and prepare for the travel day ahead. Once at the airport, we checked in, went through security, and had some time to grab some food before the flight. While most chose a muffin or croissant from a bakery close to our gate, Meredeith went the route of pizza for breakfast! After the first leg of our flight path, we landed in Maputo with only 45 minutes to get onto the next plane, which was stressful, but all of the girls efficiently got through customs and security and onto the plane! Relieved to be settled on the flight, a few more power naps were taken to rest up for our first beach day!
We arrived at Tofo beach, met our outfitter Brodie, and got settled into our bunk rooms! We looked around the lodge, walked down to the ocean, and then met up for hamburgers and fries at the pool– a meal many were craving. Full from our delicious meal, we embarked on our first Mozambique activity: a dhow sunset cruise!! Thanks to Virginia, Clio, and Panthea’s cameras, we were able to capture endless photos of the beautiful sunset and many candids of us all laughing at the many jokes being told. After a few hours of riding through the calm waves, enjoying fresh pineapple and oranges, and admiring the birds and flamingos along the way, we went back to the lodge for dinner. Tired from the long day, Caroline W. and Kiersi led us in an early Moonup and we went to bed excited for the activities to come!
For our first full day of activities, the first group to go surfing got right to it on the waves. Stokely and India showed off their veteran surfing skills and caught their own waves after a few test runs. Caroline P. somehow spotted the family we sat next to on our plane ride over here – small world! Meanwhile, the other group got after it with a game of beach volleyball, where Panthea showed us all how to bump, set, and spike. Shortly after we all wrapped up our various beach activities, we made our way to a local Tofo community for a cooking class put together by Big Toni, one of the locals working with our group. The girls got to work on a local dish simply known as matapa, named after the leaves from which the sauce is made. Virginia and Kiersi scraped the inside of some coconuts, while Caroline W. and Zoe crushed peanuts to add to the matapa sauce. Once the coconuts were scraped, Lucy and Caroline P. added hot water to the coconut meat and squeezed it out to make coconut milk, which was also added to the sauce. The girls also got to make their own bread, and Clio formed her dough into the shapes of the United States and the continent of Africa for an added spark. While the meal was cooking, Kiersi and Stokely played soccer with several local kids while Virginia held Big Toni’s 3-month-old son, Freddie. After some final preparations, the meal was ready. On our plates, we had fish kebabs, rice, matapa sauce, bread, passionfruit, pineapple, and apples, and the girls enjoyed every last bite.
After our cooking class, the groups made their way back to the beach for some more surfing and other activities. Despite not surfing before, Meredith mounted her board on her first try and rode the wave all the way in! Everyone was able to get up on their surfboards that day thanks to the help of our experienced but whimsical guides, Cleiton and Osvaldo. Once we arrived back at our lodge, Panthea and Caroline P. decided that a full day at the beach was not enough and jumped into the freezing cold pool for an evening swim! We ate chicken and pasta for dinner that night, then Panthea and India led the way at Moonup where we discussed some of our happiest memories and elected Caroline P. and Zoe as our next LODs!
At breakfast, the girls enjoyed crepes with their choice of chocolate, cinnamon sugar, or honey on top. Shortly after, we set off for our activities of the day, with one group surfing at 8 while the other hung around the beach. This time, Meredith and Caroline W. locked hands while riding a wave! On the other side of the beach, Caroline P., Stokely, Zoe, and Luke played a game of beach volleyball while Clio and India walked the beach to take some photos. After our morning activities wrapped up, we embarked on our first ocean safari! As we zigzagged along the coastline, Clio kept the group entertained by singing her rendition of “Waves” by Robin Shulz. Additionally, the girls enjoyed some fresh coconut bits while we rode the waves. Though we did not find any whale sharks on our safari, we snorkeled along a reef and spotted some smaller fish recognizable from “Nemo.” In the afternoon, Zoe and Luke caught a wave together, nearly touching boards the entire time! After some down time, we enjoyed a dinner of burger and fries again followed by a dessert of passionfruit cheesecake. At Moonup, we discussed some of our life goals and selected Stokely and Lucy as our next LODs!
The entire group started off the morning by watching the sunrise on the beach which was definitely a highlight throughout our time in Mozambique. Stokely, India, Caroline W, Meredith, and Virginia decided to take it one step further by braving the cold and jumping in the ocean right as the sun came up. After our perfect morning enjoying the sunrise and a scrambled egg breakfast, we did a quick beach clean up before setting off on our second ocean safari. While everyone did a great job, huge shoutout to Meredith, Clio, and India for staying out on the beach the longest, making sure they got every piece of trash in sight! Once we arrived at Tofo Scuba with bags full of plastic, rubber, and other debris, we grabbed our snorkel gear, loaded the boat, and went off on our ocean safari. As we drove off, our captain, Litosh, sang “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, which motivated the girls to start singing their favorite disney classics. “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana was a hit and kept us distracted as we went up and down massive waves. Although we did not have any whale shark sightings, we were able to snorkel and found many starfish! On the way back to the beach, Caroline P. sat in the front of the boat despite the continuous splashes, taking each wave like a champ.
Once back at Tofo Scuba, we had fish and salad for lunch, followed by an intense volleyball game. Kiersi impressed us all by how frequently she dove for the ball. Although she ended up with her hands and feet in the sand the majority of the time, she really showed her dedication to the team. After a long, competitive game, we finally started to lose count of the score and decided it was time to move on to our next stop of the day: the Mozambique market! Lined with souvenirs, artwork, woven bags, and more, everyone found something special to bring back home. Stokely and Lucy bought matching elephant shorts, many got wooden animals, but Panthea somehow ended up selling beaded bracelets for one of the vendors. We were having so much fun bargaining at the market and finding the perfect mementos to bring home, we practically had to drag the girls back to the lodge. At dinner, we laughed about all of our interesting encounters and favorite memories during our time together in Mozambique. We ended the night with Moonup, where Stokely and Lucy led us in a conversation about some of the best advice we have received.
In order to savor our last few hours here, Clio, Virginia, and Stokely woke up again for the sunrise and collected some shells on the beach and Caroline W and India joined Helen for a quick beach pilates session before breakfast. After, we quickly ate in order to soak up the last bit of sun before traveling back to South Africa. Although sad to leave the beach, we are all so excited for the safaris and fun activities at Mabula Game Reserve! Thank you all so much for sharing your girls with us, we have had the absolute best time getting to know them on our trip so far!! They miss you and have some big thanks to give as well!!

We are so excited to share the first leg of our trip in South Africa with you all!! We have spent the most amazing past few days working on our service project, exploring the bush, and marking the beginning of lifelong friendships! We have loved getting to know your girls and feel so grateful for the moments we have already had and pumped for the remainder of the trip. The inside jokes are piling up and we have already been starstruck by a few animal sightings including lions, zebras, and giraffes.
While most of the group flew in from Atlanta (props to Caroline W. for sending us a group photo before departing ATL), Clio arrived a few hours early and was able to help us pick out snacks for the group. After a quick gelato stop, we went over to the arrivals section and played hacky sack with some of the other group leaders while we all anxiously awaited for the flight to land. Once we had everyone together, we checked into our hotel and sat down for our first meal together– pizza!! Tired from the long day of travel, we called it a night after dinner, and let everyone get some rest before starting our first full day in South Africa.
On our first full day, Caroline P. and Kiersi wasted no time in the morning, beating everyone to the breakfast table. Our first stop on the trip was Little Mongena in Dinokeng Game Reserve. On our way there, Meredith, Caroline W., and India whipped out some flashcards and studied for the ACT, perhaps making them the first Moondance students to ever do so. We arrived in Little Mongena and soon after enjoyed a sunset cruise, where we saw many of Africa’s water-loving animals, including crocodiles and hippos! Panthea, Clio, and Virginia demonstrated their photography skills, snapping many photos right before sunset. After we arrived back on dry land, the girls were greeted with another surprise: drum lessons! Panthea showed her rhythmic aptitude when she guessed the drum leader’s beat correctly. For our dinner, we enjoyed a delicious dinner of steak or pasta (depending on choice) and then surprised Zoe with a belated birthday celebration! At our nightly Moonup meeting, we discussed some of the nerves we have about the trip, but also our excitement for the next few weeks.
After an exciting welcome night at Little Mongena, the girls were very excited to jump into our first day working with a local community. Caroline P. and Zoe were the early birds of the morning and therefore got first pick at the wide variety of fruits and pastries offered at breakfast. As the rest of the girls joined us, many tried passionfruit for the first time and loved it! Feeling full and ready for the day, we wrapped up our meal and drove to the town for our service project. Right upon arrival, a 6-year-old girl named Ona quickly became obsessed with Caroline W. and followed her lead throughout our painting project. Ona’s grandmother, Ana (community service organizer for the town), then familiarized us with our plan and goals over the next few days and we were ready to get rolling! After a few hours of painting the outside of a school classroom, we had a quick lunch and then joined the kindergarteners for their recess period which resulted into a dance party. The girls and the kids showed off their moves in a dance circle that was then followed by a groupwide conga line– definitely a trip highlight so far. After lots of silly dance moves it was time to head back for our first sunset game drive, an activity many of the girls were looking forward to. Not only was the sunset breathtaking, but both safari carts we rode in had a Big 5 sighting: cape buffalo and elephants! Although the carts were separated, we met up to enjoy snacks and drinks overlooking the savannah, sharing the excitement of our lucky animal sightings.
Although tired from the hard work we put into painting, we were surprised with hot chocolate back at Little Mongena which brought everyone’s energy back up for our next surprise… a cooking competition! We were divided into two groups, each cooking their own potjie (traditional African stew) from a set of ingredients and instructions. While we had some help, many of the girls showed off their cooking skills, impressing the main chef. Virginia took the reins for one group, making sure each vegetable was perfectly diced and that each ingredient was placed in the stew at the perfect moment. Because you can’t have too many cooks in the kitchen, some of the girls took a more hands off approach focusing on entertaining and encouraging their teammates. Stokely and Lucy did so by showing off their favorite TikTok moves, which was potentially distracting, but added loads of laughs to an already very fun competition. Both groups made amazing dishes, which were then taste tested and tweaked by the chefs in order to perfect for dinner. Finally we enjoyed the food we made along with some fish, rice, and veggies– so yum!! Tired from our long day, we had Moonup by the campfire, and went to bed ready for another day of community service.
The next morning, Meredith discovered her new favorite breakfast: charcuterie! Afterwards, we departed for our second day of community service, where we continued painting the inside of the school building. Innovation struck Kiersi as she began using her fingers as a paint brush to fill in the tiny gaps in the walls. After our service project, we informed the girls of another surprise for the day: the bush sleepout! We split up in two groups as we stealthily crept through the bush. Lucy spotted zebra tracks on the road, using her knowledge of horses to correctly identify an equine hoof print. Along the way, one of the groups showcased their impala poop-spitting talents in a game of bokdrol spoeg. It is much more sanitary than it sounds, and Stokely arose victorious! We arrived at our campsite, where we ate dinner and sat around the fire. India impressed us with her guitar skills, performing Cigarette Daydreams by Cage the Elephant. Meredith grilled one of our guides, Maritz, with loads of questions about his life and South Africa. Virginia almost convinced him that she was originally from Australia, but her failure to identify the capital city blew her cover. At Moonup, Stokely and Virginia asked us to discuss places we wished to live and some of the best decisions we have ever made.
After our night in the bush, Zoe remarked to the group that she thought she could hear wildebeest near our camp, but it turned out to be Luke’s snoring. Though we did not get much sleep, everyone continued to work hard the next day to complete our service project. Kiersi again filled in the holes with her fingers, speeding up our completion time a great deal. After we completed our work, we enjoyed a dance party with the kids and their teachers. The teachers chose Stokely to teach them a dance because they noticed her moves from our previous dance party. Clio and Zoe shared some of the spotlight as many of the kids gathered to play with their hair. Though it was a difficult goodbye to this school and community we came to know, we all felt grateful for the experience and satisfied with our work. To reward our hard work, our gracious hosts provided us with milkshakes before our gamedrive! Although most of the girls settled for the strawberry flavor, Panthea branched out to try the bubblegum flavor and ended up loving it. On our final game drive, one of the carts came across a group of ostriches – a rare sighting on the reserve. Both groups encountered another member of the Big Five as we studied two lionesses walking through the bush! For dinner, we enjoyed Braii, which is a traditional South African barbecue-style meal. For dessert, the girls tried Malva pudding and loved this new treat. At Moonup, the girls shared one word describing themselves and explained why, and Caroline P. and Kiersi were selected as our travel-day LODs!
We have had the best time so far and cannot wait to update you all after our time in Mozambique! Thank you for sharing your girls with us, they have brought so much joy into our lives and the quick friendship they are forming has been amazing to see!
