Missing Everyone Already!

July 7, 2025

As our journey through South Africa and Mozambique has come to a close, we’re left with full hearts and memories we’ll carry for a lifetime! Our final days at Little Mongena have been a perfect way to reflect on everything we’ve experienced together and filled with service, culture, wildlife, and so much laughter.

Each morning, we traveled to Kekana to continue our service-learning project, led by Ana, a kind and passionate community leader. With her guidance, we worked to sand and paint a local preschool building, transforming the space into a brighter, more welcoming environment for young learners. It was hands-on and rewarding work, made all the more fun by our trip playlist, SAF 2BEATS, which kept the energy high and the vibes great. August was a vital part of the painting crew, climbing ladders and covering every hard-to-reach spot with precision and care. During breaks, Warren connected with some of the local kids and introduced them to a fun hand game called “Taps,” which quickly turned into a favorite among the group.

Afternoons were filled with game drives through the Mongena reserve, where we encountered everything from elephants and zebras to beautiful birds and giraffes. These drives gave us time to take in the incredible landscapes and feel deeply connected to the wildlife around us.

Our evenings were just as special. On our first night, we gathered for a drum circle using handmade drums from Ghana, made of goat skin. The rhythm was contagious, and the group quickly got into the groove. Sara and Eli especially stood out. They danced and played with so much spirit, and they helped bring the whole group together in celebration.

The following night, we rolled up our sleeves for a traditional South African cooking experience-a Potjie cook-off. The group split into two teams, each led by a head chef: Tipton and Lee. Both teams brought creativity, teamwork, and culinary talent to the table. The judges were torn, and a last-minute tie-breaker was brought in to make the final call. In the end, Tipton’s team came out on top, but the real win was sharing the delicious meal together!

One of the most memorable parts of our trip was the bush walk to our overnight campsite. We hiked through the wild terrain, encountering giraffes along the way, which was an unforgettable experience for everyone, especially Reese, who has always said that giraffes are her spirit animal. Seeing her walk so close to one was a moment none of us will forget. That evening, we gathered around the campfire for dinner, music, and stargazing. Emilia had us all captivated with her scary stories, which added a fun thrill to the night. It was definitely cold, but it was absolutely magical!

Our final evening together was spent enjoying a traditional Braai dinner-a South African BBQ filled with amazing food and great company. We closed the night with our final Moonup, a reflective tradition that gave us a chance to share what we’ve learned, how we’ve grown, and what we’ll take with us. Katie, one of our Leaders of the Day (LOD), wrapped up the evening by giving everyone personalized superlatives. It was a kind and thoughtful way to honor each person in the group. Her words were heartfelt and left everyone feeling appreciated and seen.

And of course, no recap would be complete without mentioning safari karaoke. Gioia made sure every game drive had the perfect soundtrack, choosing songs that had everyone singing their hearts out. Whether we were belting out throwbacks or current hits, those drives became some of the most joyful moments of the trip.

As we ate our final breakfast at Little Mongena and later shared one last meal at the airport, it was clear how close this group had become. The friendships, laughter, and shared experiences have built a community we’ll always cherish.

Thank you for trusting us with your amazing kids. They brought energy, kindness, curiosity, and openness to every moment. We are so grateful for the time we’ve had together and for the chance to see them grow.

With love and gratitude,

George and Eliza

Savannah Sunsets and Safari Dreams

July 1, 2025

Hello again from Africa!

Since our last update, we’ve made our way back to South Africa for the next leg of our adventure, and what a time it’s been. Our days have been filled with wildlife, vast savannahs, and moments that none of us will ever forget.

We began in Johannesburg by fueling up with breakfast before heading north to our new home, the incredible Kwafubesi bush camp. Tucked into the Mabula Game Reserve, Kwaf instantly became a group favorite with its cozy tents, delicious meals, and complete access to some of South Africa’s most iconic wildlife.

After a quick safety briefing, we kicked things off with our very first game drive. Within minutes, we were spotting zebra, impala, giraffes, and more. It felt like stepping into a nature documentary. The group was all in, especially Sara, who could barely sit still as she scanned the trees, waiting for elephants to emerge from the bush.

The next morning, we set out on foot for a cheetah tracking walk. Though the elusive cats stayed hidden that day, we hiked along the river near a pod of hippos and enjoyed a peaceful picnic lunch overlooking a dam. Between drives, Gioia kept the group entertained by teaching new card games, adding some extra fun and competition to our free time.

Soon enough, we were back on the road for more wildlife viewing, and this time… the big cats delivered. During one of our drives, we spotted a full pride of lions laying in a field. Emilia, always quick with the camera, managed to capture what might be the best lion photos we’ve ever seen on a Moondance trip. They’re stunning.

Back at Kwaf, we soaked in the peaceful setting, shared meals around the table, and kept the vibes strong with our group playlist that we put together over the course of the first few days. Warren in particular has been loving the Hank Williams Jr tunes, and we now can’t imagine breakfast without a little music in the background.

One of the biggest highlights of the trip came during our cheetah darting experience. Originally, we thought we’d be working with rhinos, which had August fired up, but when we found out we’d actually be darting an even rarer animal, a cheetah, his excitement somehow got even stronger. It was a once in a lifetime kind of afternoon.

Each student had a role in the process. Tipton carefully placed the new tracking collar, Reese administered fluids while the cheetah was under anesthesia, and Eli and Katie both helped check for a microchip which is a crucial step in tracking and research. The entire group moved with care and focus, fully aware of how special and meaningful the moment was.

The next morning, we shifted gears a bit and visited the Ground Hornbill Project, where we learned about conservation efforts to protect this endangered species. Lee came in already knowing the facts because he’d read the educational materials beforehand and became our honorary hornbill expert for the day.

That afternoon, we hand-fed rhinos which was part of a local initiative to keep them healthy during the dry winter months when nutrients are scarce. It was surreal to be so close to such powerful animals, and even more meaningful knowing we were helping in a small but impactful way.

We ended that day with a traditional boma dinner, a South African barbecue held under the stars. We sat around the fire, reflected on our favorite memories so far, and soaked in the sounds of the bush. It was one of those perfect moments that make Moondance trips so wholesome.

This group continues to amaze us. They’re curious, respectful, and all-in. Whether we’re learning about wildlife, taking on new challenges, or laughing over card games, we’re doing it with the amazing people around us. We’re so proud of how far they’ve come and can’t wait for the next adventure together.

Thanks again for sharing your incredible kids with us. We’ll be back soon with more stories, but for now, we’re off to spot some more animals and make a few more memories.

With love and gratitude,

George & Eliza

Having a Blast!

June 28, 2025

HELLO FROM SOUTH AFRICA!

We are so excited to start our second session of Moondance this summer! It’s been a true pleasure to get to know all of these kids and watch them grow even in just this first week. We feel incredibly grateful to be part of this experience with such a thoughtful and energetic group.

We’re checking in after an incredible first few days on the beautiful coast of Mozambique. This group brought such strong energy from the start, and we’ve truly hit the ground running. From our very first moments together, it was clear that this crew was ready to dive in, support one another, and make the most of every experience. Even after a long journey, the group came together quickly, and we’re already feeling like a tight-knit team.

After landing in Johannesburg on Sunday night and getting a good night’s rest, we flew to Tofo Beach the next morning. We didn’t waste any time getting into the swing of things. On our first evening, we set out on a sunset cruise aboard a traditional Dhow boat. It was a beautiful and peaceful experience!

Since then, the days have been full and fun. Mornings began with ocean safaris, where the students helped launch the boat into the surf. This was no small task! Once we were out past the break, we cruised along the coast scanning for sea life, and one morning we got the rare and incredible opportunity to swim alongside dolphins. It was a moment that left everyone in awe!

Afternoons have been all about catching waves. Surf lessons have been a favorite so far, with everyone making big progress. Emilia was standing up and riding waves by herself on day two, and Tipton showed off his body surfing skills with consistent, powerful rides nearly to the beach. When we weren’t in the water, we were playing volleyball on the sand, where Eli and Reese impressed everyone with their solid serves and quick reactions.

One afternoon, we took a trip to the local market in downtown Tofo Beach. Gioia impressed everyone by confidently haggling with the vendors in Portuguese, quickly earning the respect and smiles of both our group and the locals. Her enthusiasm and language skills really brought the market to life and added an authentic cultural connection to our visit.

The group has also been really thoughtful about caring for our surroundings. As we walk to and from our beach activities, we carry trash bags and clean up along the way. Sara has gone above and beyond here, always scanning the sand for anything left behind and setting a great example for the rest of us.

One afternoon, we had the chance to learn more about Mozambican culture through a cooking class. We prepared Matapa, a traditional dish made with Matapa leaves, peanuts, and coconut. Everyone jumped in to help, and Lee took the lead in grinding the fresh coconut using traditional tools. We even got to sip coconut water straight from the tree, which was a fun and refreshing treat!

With warm days and plenty of sun, staying hydrated has been a top priority, and August has led the charge with unmatched water-chugging speed. He’s unofficially earned the title of hydration champion and continues to remind us (in very entertaining fashion) to keep our water bottles full.

Each evening, we close the day with Moonup, a special group reflection time that’s quickly become a favorite part of our routine. Katie and Warren led our first Moonup and helped create a thoughtful, welcoming atmosphere right from the beginning. The conversations since then have only deepened our sense of connection as a group.

We feel lucky to be with this crew. They’re curious, engaged, and full of positivity. Whether trying something new, encouraging each other, or simply laughing together between activities, they’ve already created a supportive and fun environment for everyone.

We’re now back in South Africa for the next chapter of our trip! We are so excited to explore game reserves and see more of this incredible part of the world. We can’t wait to see what’s next and to keep growing together as a group.

Thanks again for sharing your amazing kids with us. We’re having a great time and we’re just getting started.

With love and gratitude,

George and Eliza
