Hola from Peru for the last time!!!!
We woke up at the crack of dawn in Aguas Calientes, super excited for the long-awaited Machu Picchu tour!!! We had to wake up before sunrise to bus up to the ruins, meet our tour guide, and get checked in. We were super excited this day! Carsyn even had saved up her best outfit for all the pictures we would take. We found our guide and went through the security checkpoint where we had to show our passports and then we were off. Super official! Our guide led us down through the old farmland part of the ruins as we made our way across. He taught us all about the history of the Incan Empire, the building of Machu Picchu, and a million fun facts along the way. Addie loved learning all the history facts and was not afraid to ask him questions. Sydney was impressed with how 60% of Machu Picchu construction is actually underground and only 40% is seen above ground! We looped our way around the ruins, checking out all the rooms. Our guide taught us what each of the rooms meant and how their designs played a role in what they are used for. Eventually, we made our way to a separate building, where we took lots of pictures and videos. Leslie and I tried to take a cute video of swing dancing, but we were quickly informed that dancing at Machu Picchu is not allowed! This helps protect the ruins from too much jumping up and down, which we all found interesting. On our way out, the clouds began to slowly move and we caught a glimpse of the mountains in the distance which were just beautiful. After saying our goodbyes to our new favorite Wonder of the World, we headed back to Aguas Calientes for lunch. We dined on a traditional meal and then packed up to catch the train back to Cusco. We slept, chatted, and read on the train taking in all the beautiful views of the mountains one last time.
We arrived in Cusco, settled into our hotel, and hit the town for dinner! We wrapped up our final night of the trip with a celebratory dinner at a cozy pasta restaurant in town! The group loved trying different kinds of pasta and ravioli, and Leslie was especially excited about the olive oil and balsamic for our bread. She made sure we didn’t miss a drop! Nikki ordered a fun hibiscus passion fruit mocktail that she loved so much that she’s already planning to make it at home. Over dinner, we laughed, shared favorite moments from the trip, and soaked in one last evening together. We ended the night with ice cream and crepes before everyone gathered in Leslie and Sydney’s room for one final hangout filled with giggles and memories.
The next morning, we enjoyed a well-earned sleep-in before starting the day with waffles for breakfast. After that, we headed out for our last adventure around Cusco, starting with a coffee stop at Starbucks as a treat. With drinks in hand, we explored nearby shops. Charlotte picked up a collection of tiny figurines, and Leslie and Katherine each found adorable little llamas to take home. We were on a mission to find a snow globe for Carsyn and were delighted when we finally did. For lunch, we went to Jack’s Café, where the chicken quesadillas were a huge hit (maybe the best of the trip!). Afterward, we made our final walk back to the hotel, finished packing, and made our way to the airport to begin the journey home, starting with our first leg to Lima, hearts full and bags definitely a little heavier!
We had the absolute best two weeks in Peru and are so sad to see the trip come to an end. Thank you so much for giving your children the chance to experience this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with us. We are forever grateful!
With love,
Parker and Lizzy

Our trekking section was nothing short of eventful! We started the day early with a pancake buffet breakfast at our hotel. Then, we made our way to the bus for our ride up to start the Salkantay trail! Once we made it to the start, our LOD’s Carsyn and Addie led us in our morning huddle. We were grateful for legs that work and the insane views around us to start our trekking journey. When we started to hike, Addie led us in a hilarious game that got the whole group laughing. We all took turns greeting people that passed with a slogan that went down the alphabet. Once we made it to our base camp, we got to eat lunch: pumpkin soup with garlic bread! After fueling up, we started our hike to Lake Humantay. Nikki and Charlotte led our group up the hill from the start! We got to see 360 views and fresh snowfall on the mountain. While the hike was difficult, our girls all crushed it!! We were congratulated with an INCREDIBLE view of blue waters and snowy mountains. Once we got to the lake, Leslie ran ahead to capture pictures for us! On the way down, we all chatted about the reward of a hard hike with a great view. We made our way back to our campsite and ate dinner: fish, veggies, and our favorite chocolate pudding!!! Carsyn was so excited she was almost brought to tears. For Moonup, we had a clear view of the moon over the mountain and the stars. We laughed while choosing what animals legs we’d use to trek with instead of our own and shared how we hope to grow into the person we desire to be. Our LOD’s closed the night by selecting our LOD’s for day 2 of trekking: Char and Nikki!
The next morning we woke up so cozy and snug in our tents and sleeping bags. It was COLDDDD this morning so we bundled up and made our way to breakfast. We had bread with spreads, fruits, meats and cheeses and pancakes with chocolate sauce. The chefs made little designs on our pancakes with the chocolate sauce and the mule drawing was the cutest! After breakfast we geared up for our biggest hike of the trekking section where we would be going to our highest elevation! A whopping 15,190 feet!!!!! We started off on our trek with Nikki and Charlotte being our fearless LODs. The hike was pretty much uphill the entire first half with some steep sections and some more gradual inclines. We were LOCKED in and ready to summit this mountain. The views were crazy and Leslie made sure to capture it all on her camera and GoPro. About halfway up, we designated Sydney as the “pacer” because she was walking at the most perfect speed everyone could comfortably keep up with. With her leading us we inched our way up! Lots of mules and horses ran past us which was fun to see and we even had our own horse following us! He was a safety horse in case anyone needed a break, they could opt in to ride the horse up for a little bit. However, all the girls were handling the uphill and high altitude well so we decided to just switch off taking turns riding the horse for fun. Charlotte hopped on the horse first and it was absolutely hilarious to watch her speed ahead of all of us. The rest of the girls took their turns too and it was a great little rest of walking for everybody. We finally made it to the last stretch and the last few hundred steps. It was getting hard to push through at such high elevation, but before we knew it we made it to the highest point!!!!! It started raining so we took some quick pics with the sign and began hustling off the peak towards lunch. We were SO proud of the group for making up the Salkantay Pass!!!! As we sat down for lunch in the grass a little below the peak, it suddenly began SNOWING! This was a complete shock. It was a cold and very snowy lunch for us which is something we will never forget. We scarfed down soup and tea and started hustling down the mountain away from the snow. We finally made it to a lower elevation and the sun began to peak out and we warmed up. The rest of the way down to our campsite, we told stories from back home to entertain everyone. Carsyn was the most entertaining storyteller of all! Finally, after many miles and hours of hiking, we arrived at our camp site! Our chef whipped us some warm tea and these mini quesadilla type snacks for everyone to enjoy. The group loved them and Carsyn and Charlotte couldn’t have been happier to have this snack! We then relaxed and hung out for a while before having stir fry for dinner. Nikki and Charlotte led us in Moonup where we talked about something that happened in our lives that changed our perspective on things. This was a pivotal Moonup for our group, as we deeply opened up with one another. After Moonup, we snuggled up in our tents underneath the stars and fell fast asleep after a long hard day.
We woke up the next day excited for another day of trekking in the beautiful Andean mountains! We had a delicious warm breakfast of eggs, potatoes, bacon, oatmeal, bread, yogurt, etc. and got ready to hit the trail again. This day we were heading down hill mostly to a lower elevation. Sydney and Katherine led us as LODs down our path. We were able to talk and laugh and tell stories a lot better today than yesterday as we were cruising downhill. Carsyn gave us all a good laugh when she slipped in the mud mid hike but thank goodness for Leslie’s baby wipes that cleaned her right off! Meanwhile, Nikki walked with our guide Marco for a while and learned all about his life story which she loved. After several miles of cruising downhill we finally made it to the end of the trek for the day. We loaded up into a van and headed to our campsite. Here, we ate burritos for lunch which included some absolutely fire guacamole. We then threw on our swim suits and hopped back in the van to head to a famous hot spring! The sun had set at this point so we went night swimming! The hot springs had multiple different pools to choose from and we designated Carsyn as our pool selector, testing the temperatures for us. She picked a good one and we hung out there for so long. Katherine wanted to stay near the warm water and relax her muscles after hiking while Sydney was practicing her handstands. We all swam around and relaxed for a while before hopping out and cooling off with an ice cream. We then headed back to camp for some pasta dinner. Katherine and Sydney led us in Moonup where we talked about our biggest achievements. It was so great to hear everyone brag about themselves a little bit! We then of course quickly fell asleep in our tents, sad it was our last night camping.
On our last true day of trekking we woke up to the roosters crowing and started packing up our tents. We’re pro’s at setting up and taking down tents now! We enjoyed a nice warm pancake breakfast before being picked up by van to head to our last trail head. Today our trek consisted of walking alongside the railroad track into Aguas Calientes, which is the town below Machu Picchu! Leslie and Carsyn, our awesome LODs, kept us moving quickly on the trail and kept up group morale. We were intrigued by the new environment we were in, as it was much more of a jungle than before. We strolled through the jungle, noticing the trail was getting busier meaning we must be close! Eventually, we hiked right into town and to the front door of our hotel. We were so relieved to take off our hiking boots and freshen up a bit. We then ventured out into town to grab a late lunch. Katherine and Sydney got these insane looking bagels and everyone was very jealous of their order. After lunch, we strolled through the streets looking for little souvenirs. Nikki kindly found some gifts for her friends back home, while Addie got some beautiful earrings, and Leslie and Sydney got matching shirts. Katherine and I (Parker) jumped up and down at the sight of a good looking coffee so of course we grabbed one of those! After wandering around for a while, we picked up our duffles that had arrived via train and went back to the hotel to shower at last. This was much deserved after 4 days of hiking and 3 nights of camping. After being squeaky clean, we headed back out to grab dinner. We went with a pizza and burger bar and everyone was super content with their orders. Leslie and Carsyn led us in Moonup! We went around the circle and said something we love about the person next to us. Turns out everyone loves Charlotte’s pure heart and Addie’s contagious positivity. We then discussed a wish we had that came true and it was so great hearing how people’s hard work has paid off thus far. After Moonup, we could hardly keep our eyes open so we went straight to bed anticipating our big day of Machu Picchu touring tomorrow!!!!
We have been having the best time ever and are SO excited to see the long awaited Machu Picchu tomorrow. Talk with y’all soon as we wrap up this incredible trip.
Adios!
Parker and Lizzy

It was a blast meeting our group in Atlanta before our overnight flight to Peru! We ate dinner in the airport and Leslie inspired us to get chicken and waffles. Then we boarded the plane to start our big adventure! We all slept on the flight to Lima and before we knew it we were in South America. Once we got settled in the airport before our connecting flight to Cusco, we got Peruvian Starbucks. We all got to try different pastries and breakfast sandwiches and some coffee for needed energy. On our flight to Cusco, we got to see incredible views of the Andes mountains. We made it in no time, and our guide Marco was there to pick us up to take us into town! We got to see a glimpse of city life in Cusco before reaching our hotel to drop off some bags. Then we hit the ground running and started the journey to the river for our rafting section! The drive was GORGEOUS. We had 360 mountain views and we all agreed we’d never seen anything like it. We got to stop in a small Peruvian village to admire the view and stretch our legs. The girls got to chat and get to know more about each other on our bus ride over while we listened to sing alongs. Once we made it to our campsite, we set up camp and our amazing rafting guides cooked us dinner! It was a delicious mix of veggies, chicken, and rice. Our first night on the river was exciting for many reasons, but one big one was that it was Nikki’s first time camping! We were so lucky to have our camping location right by the river and have breath-taking views of the stars. We learned how to start a fire from one of our guides, Nico. Charlotte and Leslie tended to our fire and made sure it kept burning — they did a great job! After dinner and settling in by the fire, we had our first Moonup! It was a sweet moment for us as a group to set intentions for our next 2 weeks together and hear the whys behind choosing Moondance. We ended the night howling at the moon and laughing by the fire.
We woke up with the sunrise to start our beautiful first day of rafting in the canyon! We had mountain views all around that we didn’t get to see in the dark the night before— they were stunning. For breakfast, our rafting guides cooked us oatmeal and we got to eat papaya and bananas. Once we were fueled up we had our morning huddle led by our first LOD’s: Leslie and Katherine! We had our quote of the day, “shake it off,” by Taylor swift and all danced around. We got to answer what we are grateful for and what our intention was of the day. After, we packed up camp and hit the river! Parker, Carsyn, Sydney, and Leslie were on a raft, and Lizzy, Addie, Nikki, Katherine, and Charlotte took the other. We had hilarious guides for our journey, Santi and Caesar. It was Sydney and Nikki’s first time rafting! Talk about a cool place to raft. Caesar told us the river was called “god speaks” because of the beautiful views all around. We started rafting with a safety lesson from the river guides to prepare for the rapids. We all made jokes and practiced Spanish on our rafts. We got to learn a lot about each other and played games like wavelength! We saw lots of animals, even an otter eating a fish! We all giggled at Caesar calling all the birds “penguins.” We also learned how to all be in sync and chanted “ONE, TWO” each time we paddled. Katherine and Nikki took the front of Cesar’s raft while Sydney and Parker took the front of Santi’s. After a couple hours of hitting class 3 and 4 rapids, we got to stop on the beach for lunch. Lunch was a huge hit! It was sandwiches with avocado, cucumber, tuna, onions, cheeses, peppers, and tomatoes. We got to try Peruvian spicy mayo, as well. We had great lunch chats and got to teach the importance of sunscreen and hydration before hopping back on the raft for more rapids. Our rafting guides kept us laughing with jokes as we continued down the river. We laughed while we all made animal noises at each other and splashed water when we passed each another. We were so proud of the girls for their strength rowing and for keeping positivity up even when the water was cold! Once we got to our awesome second camp site, we organized our tents and duffels and then had snacks. We got popcorn, cookies, jam, crackers, and hot chocolate. It was so fun sitting together and reflecting on our amazing first day of rafting. We laughed and got to know each other better as we answered random questions about each of our lives. Our little group of 9 was starting to mesh very well. Our guides, once again, cooked us such a yummy dinner. We got to eat pasta with a bit of an Asian twist. It had veggies and tasted similar to stir-fry. Over dinner we got to sit by the fire and chat about what sports we all do and we guessed everyone’s middle name. Charlotte guessed Addie and Sydney’s middle names on the first guess! After chatting for a while, we got ready for Moonup led by our incredible leaders of the day, Leslie and Katherine. We got to hear everyone’s serenity song and discussed what we were happy to leave behind at home during these two weeks. We ended the night with a group namaste and got ready for bed to be energized for our second day on the river!
The next we woke up by the beautiful Ampurimac River at our cozy camp site. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast of eggs, toast with jams and spreads, fruits, oatmeal, and teas. There’s just nothing like having breakfast right by the river and surrounded by such beautiful mountains! We then packed up our camping equipment and got prepped for our second day of rafting! We threw on our helmets and lifejackets and jumped into our boats. We split into our two teams in Santi and Ceaser’s boats and headed out down the river. This day we were conquering our most intense rapid of the trip- the Ed Sheeran rapid. Our raft guides nicknamed this rapid the Ed Sheeran rapid because he rafted it a couple years back and flipped out of the boat. So naturally we sang Ed Sheeran down the river as we geared up to conquer this massive rapid! Once the guides scouted out our route we were off! My boat (Parker’s) went first. Sydney and Leslie took up the front of the boat bracing the big waves, while Carsyn and I paddled strong in the back. We flew down the rapids and landed in the calm water at the bottom. We watched the other boat come down behind us cheering them on with each paddle. Both boats made it down without anyone falling out (meaning we must be better paddlers than Ed Sheeran). We continued on our rafting journey, completing rapid after rapid. This day was very fast paced so we were all full of energy and good vibes. Towards the end of the river, the guides pulled the boats over to a perfect rock jumping spot. With Lizzy and I going first, the rest of the group followed behind! Charlotte was eager to climb up to the top and leap off! Nikki was slightly scared of the height but overcame her fear and went flying off the rock. It was amazing to see her challenge herself! I noticed Katherine hadn’t jumped in yet so I leapt from my boat to her boat attempting to pull her into the water. Unfortunately, Caesar the raft guide had her back and I lost this fight terribly ending up in the water myself thanks to Ceaser. After our rock jumping, we rafted the final part of the river before pulling off the shore. Our guides prepared a delicious corn, veggies, and lentil dish for lunch while we packed up our rafting gear and changed into dry clothes. We loaded up into the van and headed back to Cusco where we would be for the night. We arrived at our adorable hotel in Cusco and threw on warm clothes because it was getting cold and hit the town for dinner! Lizzy and I took the group to a delicious pizza restaurant. This pizza restaurant was legit – wood fire ovens in the dining area and everywhere in the kitchen so we had a feeling it was going to be delicious. Leslie and Carsyn ordered the biggest pizza you’ve ever seen with a total of 16 slices. It took up the entire table. Addie went with the Margarita pizza, Sydney settled on cheese, Nikki got the meat lovers, and Charlotte got pepperoni. Meanwhile, Katherine switched things up and got a yummy looking calzones. After absolutely devouring the best pizza ever we of course were on the hunt for dessert. We stopped into an ice cream shop and each grabbed a scoop of ice cream. On the way back, we saw a market with Peruvian snacks and drinks so stopped in there and everyone bought a few good looking snacks to have for the next couple days. The group got cookies, chips, wafers, and candy to try! We made our way back to our hotel where we did Moonup. Nikki and Sydney were our LODs and got the group talking about the best piece of advice they’ve ever been given. Addie’s advice of “only handle it once” was a group favorite. After Moonup, we were thrilled to shower and sleep in real beds for the first time this trip!
We woke up bright and early after a good nights sleep in our hotel. For breakfast, we had a variety of options at the buffet. Toast, eggs, yogurt, cereal, fruit, and much more! We had our morning huddle led by LOD’s: Carsyn and Addie. Next, we packed up and headed down to the bus. It was our first day of service in the Ccorca village! When we arrived, we were greeted with more mountainous views and one of our kind new guides Daniel! He showed us around where we would be sleeping for the next 2 nights. After we settled in, we went to the town square to take our van to the corn field. There, we spent lots of time shucking corn that would be used for the new school. We had great bonding conversations in each shucking group and filled 7 bags of corn! The corn field was centered in the middle of the mountains and we got to learn how to shuck corn from the locals that own the farm. After many hours on the farm, we traveled back to our house for lunch. We started with soup that tasted similar to miso then we got chicken, salad, and potato’s. After lunch, we hung out and played BS to chill out for a bit, and then went on a walk to explore town. Every step we took provided a different view! Daniel got very creative with poses and we took lots of photos. Leslie, Carsyn, Addie, and Katherine practiced their Spanish greeting locals in town. Once we finished exploring, we hiked back up to our house and prepared for our cooking class! Our chef, Leandro, got us started in the kitchen with different tasks. Charlotte and Nikki deboned fish, Sydney and Leslie peeled Lima beans, Katherine snapped peas, Carsyn cut cucumbers, and Addie cut squash. The meal we prepared was called “Trucha”. As dinner was cooking, we all sat around the dinner table and made bracelets with string Charlotte shared! Dinner was served shortly after. Our cut up veggies, beans, and deboned fish made up salad, soup, and breaded fish! It was delicious. After we finished dinner, we got to sip on tea while LOD’s Addie and Carsyn prepped for Moonup. We got to laugh over everyone’s favorite animal they’ve seen on our trip and share hard moments of the past year paired with what we’ve learned from them. Our trip has been incredible so far and we’re so excited to see what is discovered in our next days of service and trekking!
We woke up in our cozy beds for our first full day in Ccorca. We enjoyed some toast and spreads, avocado, cheese, fruits, eggs, sausage, etc. for breakfast. We then got ready for our full day of activities ahead! We walked down to the town square and hopped in a cattle car to drive to a scared area. After one of the most beautiful drives through the gorgeous mountains we arrived at the sacred Incan ritual site. Here, our guide Marco led us in a traditional Incan cave ritual where we prepared a gift for the Pachamama (aka Mother Earth). Katherine was our main decorator but we each contributed to the gift’s design. We added spices, beans, grains, corn, sparkles, glitter, candies, cookies, a chocolate frog and more. We then each made a wish into our gift and Leslie tied it up with a colorful string! In the next part of the ceremony, we burned our gift in a fire. This was nothing like any of us had ever seen and it was super special to be a part of it! After preparing and giving our gift to the Pachamama, Marco then led us through a cave. While this cave was much smaller and narrower than we expected, we made it out the other side! Carsyn and Katherine particularly conquered their fears and successfully crawled through the cave. Although we were very outside of our comfort zones in the cave, we came out the other side laughing. After wrapping up our cave ceremony, we headed back to our place, again admiring the beautiful views on the way back. We gathered around for lunch where we had soup, garlic bread, mashed potatoes, and meatloaf. We then had some free time after lunch where the group played cards, read, and chilled. After our relaxing time, we grabbed our water bottles and headed out for an afternoon walk. The first part of our walk was picking up trash along the road for community service. Addie really took charge and was finding every hidden piece of trash others couldn’t see! We made our way along the road to where we then cut off to check out some Pre-Inca ruins. We saw old drawings and murals painted on rocks, skulls, tombs, etc. It was so cool to see such ancient ruins from Pre-Incan civilization. Nikki was especially invested in the history nestled among these rocks and made sure to capture everything on her camera! We meandered through the old ruins for a while before popping back out on the road. We made the trek back home continuing our trash collection. Upon arriving back at home, we laid in the grass and looked at the stars before circling up for dinner. We had soup, chicken, veggies, and potatoes for dinner and an insane chocolate pudding like dessert. Charlotte and Sydney then led us in Moonup where we talked about who we would want to be for a day if we could choose and the person who has had the biggest impact on our lives. Many of you were mentioned! We then fell fast asleep after a super busy day.
We woke up in Ccorca for our 3rd and final day of community service. We dined on oatmeal, fruits, toasts with spreads, eggs, sausage, etc. for breakfast and then headed out for our final corn shucking shift. We split up into teams and began tackling the corn shucks again. The farm owner’s little boy tagged along this time and he quickly befriended Leslie! She practiced her Spanish with him and it was adorable to watch. After shucking all the corn, we tried a traditional preparation of Peruvian potatoes the farm owner made us. It was basically like a baked potato without the toppings. After wrapping up our corn shucking time, we headed back to our lodge for lunch. We devoured lunch and packed up our bags to head back to Cusco. We were sad to leave such a beautiful place behind, but were excited for the fun days to come. We meandered around Cusco in the afternoon checking out some stores before stopping for dinner. We had a delicious American dinner full of burgers and mac and cheese and afterwards we of course had to stop for crepes! They were AMAZING! We got back to the hotel and circled up for Moonup where we talked about our deepest fears in life, led by Katherine and Leslie. After a meaningful conversation, we headed off to our rooms to prepare for trekking and get a good night’s sleep. We are sooooo excited to start our trekking part of the trip tomorrow!!!!
Talk to y’all soon!!!
Adios!!!
