Friends and family,
It seems impossible that it was just two weeks ago that we all met. The kindness and love within this group has truly overwhelmed us. We already find ourselves missing them all so much and are incredibly sad to be saying goodbye! We know from the bottom of our hearts that we were all meant to meet and every person added something extremely special to our group. We feel so lucky that these people stepped into our lives and we’ll always cherish our friendships and priceless memories together. We cannot express enough how much we have learned from them and how much we are better off by knowing them. We are so grateful, beyond measure, for the opportunity to encourage your kids to be unapologetically themselves and to illuminate the beauty of life through their eyes.
Our last few days together have been amazing. We’ve been having so much fun since we last checked in! Our final activity of the trip was white water rafting. On Monday morning we had a delicious breakfast of doughnuts, yogurt, cereal and fresh berries for a full day on the river! Once we arrived at our rafting outfitters, we got geared up and piled into a bus to head towards our put in. The morning was the perfect warm up, mostly class 2s with a few class 3s. The girls named our boat Gorjana, in part after our favorite jewelry brand but also because we are rafting on the Royal Gorge! This section of the Arkansas River is absolutely stunning. It is a canyon that drops nearly 65 feet per mile, lasts 10 miles and features over 20 rapids! We stopped for lunch along the river made by our wonderful guides, Sam and Chris. After lunch we were ready to enter the Gorge, where we spent the afternoon paddling through class 4 rapids! The boys boat made sure to hit all the most intense sections and got some BIG splashes, especially in the front. Austin, Liam and Reed were soaked! A huge congratulations to the girls boat for making it through the Wall Slammer Rapid without hitting the wall at all. We have some super strong paddlers! After a really fun day on the water, we went into town to get an ice cream treat at Dairy Queen. While we were eating ice cream, Harrison started a game of “out of the loop” while Scarlett, Mia and McKinley played wavelength. Once we were back at camp Emily and Ansley made burgers for dinner with the help of their sous chefs, Charlotte and MT. We devoured a whole watermelon, too! And to finish off the day, Will started a fire for us to roast s’mores. Henry invented his “perfect s’more”– first, you burn the marshmallow, peel off the outer layer, and then roast the inside. You also have to melt the chocolate and toast the graham cracker. It truly is delectable! We did Moonup around the fire, which is always a perfect way to end the day.
Banquet day! We can hardly believe it! Liam, Harrison and Emily all woke up extra early this morning and watched the sunrise while drinking hot coffee. It was such a memorable way to start the day! The boys woke up the rest of the kids for chocolate chip pancakes. After packing up camp we started on our drive towards Denver. Per usual, we made a couple of gas station stops along the way where we splurged on plenty of candy and car snacks. Our van rides usually start out slow, sometimes the kids fall asleep and we listen to chill music. But by the end, we were blasting Bruno Mars, their favorite artist, and screaming at the top of our lungs! We arrived at our super cool, huge campsite with a pavilion. The boys decided to sleep under the pavilion and created a fort-like arrangement by putting their sleeping bags under the counter. It looked just like bunk beds! They even brought a tent inside so that everyone could sleep all right next to each other. They are pros at coming up with creative, fun ideas to go the extra mile. In the afternoon we cleaned the van at a self-service car wash. Hayes and Avery were especially great at vacuuming and even gave extra attention to the messy floor in the back where the boys usually sit. Gross!! Everyone took turns scrubbing the outside of the van, too, which needed a LOT of cleaning to get all of the paint markers off! Once all of our errands were done, it was finally time for our banquet dinner. The restaurant where we ate is by Washington Park, a super cute area of Denver. The kids went all out-mocktails, personal pizzas, and even gnocchi! For dessert we walked down the street to get ice cream, of course. We hustled back to the campsite afterwards because we had a very important game of poker to start. Instead of rocks, we played with real poker chips this time and even had a prize of Hot Wheels and a keychain stuffed animal! We all got into teams of two and played for several hours. We took an intermission for our final Moonup, which Hayes and MT did a wonderful job leading. Our serious question was about our biggest takeaway from the last two weeks. All of the kids gave such mature responses, remarking that they learned about how to live in the moment and push outside of their comfort zones. For our silly question, we all shared our funniest moments of the trip. This group had SO many laughs it was incredibly difficult to pick just one!
What a remarkable two weeks we’ve had. Thank you so much for the opportunity to spend time with your incredible kids. They all have such big hearts and have formed friendships that will undoubtedly last a lifetime. As we reflect on these last two weeks, our buckets are overflowing with gratitude. NUGS!
Lots of love,
Emily, Ansley and Will

Friends and Family,
We have been having SO much fun with your incredible kids these past few days! Colorado is spectacular at this time of year. The views are breathtaking, wildflowers are in full bloom, and the weather has been nearly perfect. But even more importantly, we are soaking up every single second of our adventure! Jumping right back in from where we last left off…
The sand dunes are unbelievably gorgeous, and the kids all crushed our sunrise hike! It’s not easy walking 8 miles through sand!! We started off early with a 3 AM wakeup call so that we could reach the highest dune in North America by sunrise. Austin was our fearless leader, helping us keep a quick pace. Along the way, we listened to a ton of hype music, and before we knew it, we’d reached our destination. It was so serene, and there was not one other person in sight! MT and Henry were the first to try sandboarding and kindly taught everyone else their technique to avoid falling off the boards. McKinley took some spectacular photos to capture the moment, which I know we will all be so grateful to have as a keepsake for the rest of our lives! We spent a while playing in the sand, enjoying the peaceful morning. The hike back was much easier, in part because we could sandboard down the hills we’d hiked up just a few hours before! Once we got to camp, we made some delicious chocolate chip pancakes that everyone devoured. We packed up and hit the road towards the area we’d be backpacking in the days to come. Today’s drive was one of our most fun yet because we had three stops along the way! 1) Pagosa Springs. In this small town, we found the cutest coffee shop where the kids all got some well-deserved treats. Scarlett and Avery discovered frozen lemonade, which was a huge hit! 2) Durango. Our stop here was less glamorous since we just had to get groceries, but everyone still loved helping shop for backpacking food, especially GORP ingredients! During backpacking, we make GORP bags (Good Ol’ Raisins and Peanuts), but for us, it’s more of a yummy combo of candy and snacks. 3) Ouray. The final, and in our opinion, best stop of the drive. This town is absolutely stunning and nicknamed the Switzerland of America for its beauty. We ate dinner here at a great local restaurant right along Main Street. There was even a singer who played guitar on the patio, making for a truly perfect meal! Before dinner arrived, we played broken telephone and told stories about our friends from home. Spirits were so high! Once we got to our campsite, we had a great Moonup where we talked about what fills our buckets. Many of the kids talked about how special it is to spend time with friends and family. We then took our first showers (finally!) and then quickly went to bed since we were all exhausted after a full day!
Backpacking day 1. Whooo!! After a much-needed sleep-in, we made breakfast and then did the “duffle shuffle” to pack everything into backpacking packs. Ansley and Will helped the kids pack while Emily organized the group cooking gear and food. Once we were all packed up, we hit the road towards the trailhead. Along the way, we stopped at our version of a “fancy” gas station where they have tons of yummy snacks. After enjoying our last touch of civilization for a few days, we wound up into the San Juan Mountains. It was raining, so we waited out the storm by the van and ate lunch. Once it was drizzling, Avery and McKinley started a game of volleyball while Liam, Henry, and Austin played football. Before we knew it, the storm had passed, so we could start our backpacking journey! Today’s hike is just over four miles, with some ups and downs but nothing too crazy. Mia and Henry, our LODs, did an absolutely amazing job setting our pace. The landscapes were spectacular, shifting between thick wooded forest trails to open fields. On the trail, we played wavelength, a group favorite game. It’s a great way to get to know each other better and a fun way to pass time while hiking on the uphill sections. We played music, too (of course), and sang along to our group playlist! It was time for dinner when we reached our campsite, so we whipped up some tortellini, pesto, veggies, and chicken sausage. We’ve been eating well!! The other Moondance group, COT A, was camping nearby, so the kids had fun saying hi to each other, and Ansley, Will, and I loved catching up with the other leaders. During Moonup, we all felt blessed and grateful to be in such a beautiful destination. Our campsite sits at the intersection of TWO waterfalls, making for the perfect white noise background to fall asleep to.
The next morning was incredibly relaxing because it was our first day where we truly had nowhere to be. We all snoozed until late into the morning and felt very well-rested! After eating oatmeal with extra Nutella (these kids reallllyyy love sugar), we got ready for our day hike to a lake. Everyone was happy to ditch the heavy packs at camp and just bring a water bottle for the day! The way there was challenging because it’s mostly uphill, but the kids did an incredible job encouraging each other. I love days spent hiking because it’s such a great opportunity to have deeper conversations and learn about family and friends back at home. Once we were at the lake, Will taught Mia and Austin how to fly fish. Hayes, Scarlett, and Charlotte somehow still had hiking energy, so they went on their own excursion up the rocks beside the lake. You’ll have to ask them all about it in a couple of days—they had quite the adventure! And those of us who were more tired just chilled by the lake, playing poker. Ansley and I tried single-serve drip coffee that we bought in a small town, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Everyone took care of themselves by participating in whatever activity sounded most enjoyable. It was truly perfect. The hike back was so speedy, and the views were breathtaking. It was such a clear day, so as we descended, you could see the mountains with thousands of perfect pine trees in the distance. For dinner, we ate stir fry with tons of fresh veggies. But the big hit of the night was hot chocolate. Harrison used his Nalgene, which he filled to the brim! Our serious question at Moonup was one quality we like about someone else in the group. It was amazing to hear everyone complement each other and share such kind words. We like to close Moonup with a game, so tonight McKinley and Harrison chose to play the very popular wavelength. Y’all will have to play as a family once the kids are back home. It really is so much fun! This group has the best time together. They laugh a LOT and are all best friends. It’s so amazing to witness as a leader.
Day 3 of backpacking was just as incredible as the days prior. We had another slow morning and ate extra chocolatey chocolate chip pancakes. The sun was out, which felt amazing! The girls had a massage train—much needed after so much hiking in the days prior. Meanwhile, the boys played a game called Out of the Loop. It has quickly become a new favorite! After a while of relaxing, we all ventured down to the waterfalls. This spot could easily be straight out of a movie. It seems too beautiful to even be real! Hayes, Harrison, Liam, and Reed were the first to go under the waterfall. The water is cold, but very refreshing. After our adventure, we decided to pack up and hike towards the trailhead to camp so we could get an earlier start in the morning. It was a little rainy, but that certainly did not stop us from having fun. If anything, it made for a more stunning hike as the weather cleared and everything in the forest was slightly damp. We enjoyed especially long breaks since we were in no rush! Some notable trail conversations included fantasy football and debates over our favorite TV shows. When we made it to our destination, everyone was tired but excited for clean clothes and fresh warm layers. Tonight turned out to be one of my favorite nights of the summer. We made pita pizzas after setting up tents and then spent the next couple of hours hanging out while the sun set. Ansley, with the help of Harrison, MT, and Charlotte, taught Mia, McKinley, and Scarlett how to play poker. Will, Austin, Liam, and Reed played football and then proceeded to drink Nalgene’s full of Kool-Aid. After plenty of sugar, we gathered for Moonup under the stars. It was such a special night, and one I will forever cherish. Our buckets were all overflowing with joy and love for one another. Something about being in the backcountry is so special and unifying for the group.
Today has been an exciting day! We spent the morning in Telluride, which most of us agree is our favorite town yet! For breakfast, we went to a spot called Baked in Telluride. It was delectable! Everyone got bagels, and we also devoured some doughnuts and sweets. Since we had some time to kill before shops opened, Harrison led us to the town park. This is no ordinary park—it has everything you could imagine! I played basketball with MT, Reed, Liam, and Henry. The girls created their own game on the playground called Crossey Roads with the swing set. But the real highlight of the morning was shopping! We must’ve gone in at least ten shops. Everyone made great purchases for people they love at home. They are all very excited to give y’all some gifts! This afternoon we’re heading to our campsite for rafting. It can’t be real that we are already entering the final days of our time together. Spending the past many days with your kids has felt like a dream come true.
Thank you so very much for sharing your precious kids with us. We love them all dearly and will be SO sad when we have to say goodbye.
So much love,
Emily, Ansley, and Will

7/18: Trip Update 1
Friends and family,
Greetings from sunny Colorado! It is so hard to believe that we are almost a week into our adventure – time has really flown by!! We are having the most amazing time with your kids. They are impressively mature, kind, and love to take on new challenges. It is especially remarkable to witness their love for one another. In such a short span of time they have become best friends, and we could not be more grateful that we get to spend two weeks together.
We hit the ground running on day 1 and have barely stopped since! After all the kids arrived, we loaded up the van to head towards our first activity destination. On the drive, we jammed out to so many different music genres. To curate the perfect trip playlist we listened to country, rap, pop and everything in between. Hayes, our future singer/songwriter, suggested a ton of hits that the whole group loved. Starships and Party in the U.S.A. have become the theme songs of our trip! On our way into town, we picked up pizza from a local spot and ate at the park. In the cheese vs. pepperoni debate, cheese won but it was a close call! When we finally arrived at our campsite the kids learned how to set up tents. It was so wonderful to see them working together and helping each other. The girls even created a “mega tent” by setting up two tents side by side so that the doors connected. Before bed we had our first of many Moonsups. Moonup is a nightly tradition where we reflect on the day. We laugh a LOT, but also take some much-needed time to slow down and learn more about each other. It is especially comforting to recognize that Moondance groups are gathering for the same ritual all around the world. We elected our first leaders of the day, LODs, who will lead Moonup and help us throughout the day. Henry and Scarlett immediately impressed us with their ability to form quick friendships and step up as leaders, so we chose them to lead us on our first day of rock climbing. Our first Moonup was the perfect closing of day 1. Ansley, Will and I all fell asleep with our buckets full, eager to dive right into the first activity!
Thanks to eastern time, all the kids were up early ready to rock climb! We enjoyed a delicious breakfast of bacon, eggs and bagels to fuel us for a big day. We met our guides at the crag and warmed up with a stretch circle. Everyone absolutely crushed rock climbing and impressed us with their strength and agility! Harrison and Henry set record speeds on the hardest route. In the afternoon, we explored Crested Butte and had our first of many ice cream stops. It is the most beautiful mountain town! McKinley, Scarlett and Avery all bought matching sweatshirts and have barely taken them off since. MT and Austin got Pit Viper sunglasses and look just like true locals. Everyone made such great purchases! Back at camp we headed straight to the lake to cool off and hang out for the rest of our perfect afternoon. The boys played “keep away football” and actually made some new friends who let them hop on their paddle board. Meanwhile, the girls washed their hair, taking advantage of our rare opportunities to shower. It felt so refreshing to jump in the water after being in the heat all day! Before dinner, Ansley and I had a burrito bowl cooking lesson. Everyone mastered the proper technique for cutting bell peppers and learned how to use the Coleman stove. We devoured the bowls and felt super accomplished with the day! Henry and Scarlett led a super special Moonup where we talked about people in our lives who we look up to. Everyone mentioned someone in their family – it is so evident how much they love and adore you all. On behalf of our whole group, we want to thank you and share how grateful we are for all of you.
The next morning the kids were so speedy to pack up camp that we had time to stop in town for coffee and breakfast treats before our second day of rock climbing! It’s so fun and memorable to explore new places and support local businesses. The macaroons were a big hit, especially the coffee flavor. Who would’ve thought Chai lattes would be such a hit for this age group! We all felt extra energized and ready to climb. Today we met our guides at a place called Buddha’s Belly. It’s such a cool spot, featuring three beginner routes and one challenge. Harrison was the first to attempt the challenge and everyone else was quick to follow. MT, McKinley, Mia, and Charlotte learned how to belay and helped cheer their friends on all morning. Reed and Liam even went on their own side quest, exploring the mountain of massive rocks next to our climbing spot. In the afternoon, we stopped for groceries and a Walmart run which the kids all thoroughly enjoyed. Many snacks later, we drove to our campsite along the Arkansas River. Austin and Hayes helped make tortellini for dinner which was a huge hit. Before Moonup, Charlotte, Harrison, Emily, Ansley, and Will played Poker which has become a favorite game. We play with rocks, so everyone is especially risky when it comes to betting! The LODs get to choose how we close up Moonup, and tonight we played broken telephone. Rather than repeating the same message, you use one word and say the first thing that comes to mind. It’s hilarious to see what word we end with compared to the starting word. Our stomachs all hurt from laughing so hard! Exhausted from a busy few days, we headed to bed to rest up for rafting.
We woke up excited for the day ahead! Once arriving at River Runners, our rafting outfitters, we got geared up and packed everything we’d need for the next two days into dry bags. Browns Canyon is a beautiful white water section of the Arkansas River with over ten rapids. Most of them are class three and especially technical at this time of the year. Dom and Split, our awesome guides, gave us a safety briefing and then we were off! The first rapid we encountered had a boat chute that was a group favorite. Between rapids, we conversed about our favorite way to eat potatoes and also brainstormed boat names. Reed and Harrison decided to name one of the boats Kendrick after the rapper Kendrick Lamar. It was an extremely fun-filled morning and the weather couldn’t be more ideal! Before reaching our campsite, we stopped at Jump Rock to (safely) jump in the water. Austin and Henry were the first to launch themselves into the water and everyone else was quick to follow. They even had a cannonball contest. Liam took home the gold, but MT was a close second! At camp, we formed a fire line to unload the gear boat and then put on warm, dry clothes so we could explore the area. It was absolutely gorgeous to be alongside the river at such a remote, private campsite. We were surrounded by mountains made up of large rocks, which the kids all eagerly explored. Ansley and I led Charlotte, McKinley, Mia and Avery up to a viewpoint where we could see Zoom Flume, the first big rapid of our second rafting day. We worked up our appetite by doing a mini workout to a song called Sally Up. We all got this song stuck in our head and made it a goal to try to do it every day just for fun. After a couple of exciting hours exploring, we enjoyed a delicious dinner of Kung Pao chicken prepared by our guides. They also made us a fire so we could roast s’mores for dessert. Hayes and Scarlett took the lead on making a “mega smore” by making a tower of 11! Our guides joined us for a special Moonup led by MT and Mia where we talked about our happy places around the fire. That night, many in our group discovered cowboy camping and slept under the beautiful stars.
Day two of rafting was even more thrilling than the first. We went through so many rapids back to back to back. There’s a rapid called Widow Maker that is very technical and challenging at this time of the season. The kids knocked it out of the park and the moment was EPIC! Once we got to the more chill section of our rafting day, Kendrick’s boat was singing along to some tunes as we floated down the river. Liam and Henry’s boat decided to start a splash war and we all were soaked and smiling uncontrollably. It was truly the perfect summer day! Something that is so awesome to see as leaders is the group going from being nervous for the rapids to beaming ear to ear and congratulating each other with big paddle high fives! After our float came to an end, we played a game like musical chairs but with our paddles, while our guides prepared us delectable Caesar salad wraps which was a great switch up from our sandwich streak. We loaded up our van shortly afterward and headed to a town called Leadville! It was super cute and had phenomenal ice cream. The kids received some advice from a local in the shop who allegedly extracted the negative energy from the ice cream just by looking at it. The three of us leaders coveted “mellies” which are a very prized possession within the Moondance leader community. They are very hard to get and we are very excited if you can’t tell! We ventured into other local shops and enjoyed how unique Leadville is. I mean, it is the highest city in the United States after all! The LODs, Avery and Liam, helped us grocery shop for dinner and chose our next sweet treat. The ride home was filled with arguably the most energy our group has had yet. Everyone was singing at the top of our lungs and dancing to the music. We found some niche covers of popular songs that have become our favorite songs to play in the morning to wake everyone up. To say this group is laughing for more than 90% of the day would be an understatement. When we returned to our magical campsite, Hecla Junction, we cheffed up quesadillas for dinner and played many rounds of Texas Hold Em. Harrison always seems to take home the jackpot (a pile of rocks)! Tonight’s Moonup was very thoughtful and everyone shared a trait that they’re working on within themselves. “Nugs to rafting” was agreed on by the whole group and everyone headed to sleep feeling super accomplished by the day.
Today is a VERY SPECIAL DAY because it is Scarlett’s 12th birthday! We began the celebration with bacon, eggs and breakfast brownie bites. Then we were off to Captain Zipline! For the first few hours of the morning, we all challenged ourselves on different levels of the ropes course. The scenery around the course is insanely gorgeous and everyone was super stoked to cheer each other on. Henry and Emily absolutely crushed the double black diamond. The group was in awe by the speed and agility it takes to conquer this course – it’s no joke!!! We had a special addition join our group today, one of the guides’ dogs named Hela. She didn’t leave our side the entire morning and made sure we all felt very protected. Even Ansley, who safely stayed on the green courses 🙂 Afterward, we all annihilated some sandwiches for lunch before we took on the six different ziplines! The kids love this part to really take in the views and pretend that they are Spiderman (except for Reed who secretly may actually be him)! Hela was still following us zipline to zipline as we blasted music from our speaker, which we make sure to bring with us everywhere we go. I have a feeling there are a few songs that will forever remind this group of our trip and specifically our fun zipping through Colorado. We all had a blast feeling like we were on top of the world! Afterward we visited the cutest town called Salida. If you can’t tell by now, we are big fans of town visits! We’ve been driving through for several days now, so it was especially exciting to finally get the chance to explore. We had to get ice cream, of course, and shop in the local stores for souvenirs. There is also a super cool viewing area in town with a wave in the river that people can surf on. It made for ideal people watching and we especially loved Max, the husky who we spent at least 20 minutes petting at the park. We then headed towards our campsite next to the sand dunes for an early bedtime in preparation for our sunrise hike. But before ending the day we had more celebrating to do, so we all sang to Scarlett, ate cookie cake, and concluded our birthday party with a unicorn piñata! The girls even surprised her with some special gifts including earrings, a friendship bracelet, and a card signed by the whole group. The kids also went crazy decorating the van with paint pens. We are definitely going to get some interesting looks during the rest of our drives adventuring through Colorado, but that’s all part of the fun!
We are having the BEST time with your amazing kids. Every single day just keeps getting better and better. It’s going by wayyy too fast!!! I feel so beyond grateful for the time we have together. Until next time!
So much love,
Emily, Ansley, and Will
