Final Days in Cali!

July 27, 2024

Salutations everyone! Monday morning was sad, as we realized that we only have a few more nights with these sweet kids. We could not have been blessed with a better session and a more enthusiastic group.

We woke up at Point Reyes Monday morning. We love this campsite so much because it gives us such a break from the California heat! The cool weather, green grass, and coastal air feel like a luxury after days and days in the sun. For breakfast, we ate super fast. We had a busy day planned for the students and did not want to waste a moment of precious time. We ate croissants, cereal, and crêpes. As we packed up our tents, the girls reminisced at how far we have come this session. Sophie could not believe how quickly the time had past. She has become best friends with every girl in our group and they love each other like sisters. Ellie helped everyone clean up camp and went above and beyond to assist her friends. We left Point Reyes and headed to our final campsite at Pacifica. This was our last lengthy car ride and made this most of it! Westy suggested the most fun songs and had all of us singing together. One of our favorites to belt out is “Drift Away”! As we sang in unison, we drove across the Golden Gate bridge. Our group could hardly believe it – the mix of clear sky and fog created the most beautiful scene. Olivia was in awe! It was our group’s first time ever seeing it. Once we arrived at our campsite, we set up camp and had a quick lunch. Cole and Westy have recently become obsessed with our instant oatmeal. You would think it was gourmet by the excitement over the simple staple. Once we ate, Cole also got the group engaged in game. We were fortunate to have a ping pong table and lacrosse sticks at this campsite. Cole had the whole group wanting to play! After a couple hours, we hopped back in the car and headed for our town day in Sausalito. Knox was especially excited to walk around with everyone! His smile was a mile wide as we drove into the beautiful Bay-Area town. Our group had loved doing activities together. Even walking around town, all 12 enjoyed shopping in unity. It made us smile to watch them all sit crowded at a table together eating pizza and laughing. Crammed together, they looked like they had known each other forever. Rosie and Ella offered to throw away everyone’s trash and clear the table. This is only one small example of leadership we have seen in these sweet girls. After a delicious pizza dinner, we walked around some more. We could not stop the fun there, though. We decided to take the group for ice cream and to watch the sunset at Baker Beach. The weather was breezy with a small chill. At the beach, Chad and George made teams to play football. Halsey and Willy loved running around and working up a sweat! It may have been foggy and a little cool, but the students hardly noticed because they were so busy playing. Exhausted from a long day, we drove back to Pacifica to sleep in our tents. Hayes had the entire group’s stomachs hurting with laughter on the drive back.

Goooooood Morning, Tuesday! It may be our last day together in California, but the students had the same energy as day 1. Since becoming closer on the trip, we have found that everyday brings a new found burst of excitement and liveliness. The girls could spend hours talking to each other. Even after long days and technical activities, our kids still seek out time to play and run around. We woke up and had our final breakfast together of eggs, cereal, sausage, and croissants. Talk about a buffet! We played more games at the campsite until it was time to head down to the beach for a fun surprise: Taco Bell. But not just any Taco Bell, the most scenic Taco Bell in the world. Seriously, you may wanna look it up. And boy, we went crazy!!! Baja Blasts and tacos for everyone. Hayes and Knox were pumped! Knox even got some fun merchandise from the taco bell. Mathes dug into her food with no hesitation. With full stomachs, we hit the waves for our last surfing lesson. The surf instructors were as wonderful as we remembered. They patiently demonstrated everything for the students, giving guidance that allowed everyone to stand on their surf board. Hayes and Halsey killed it on their boards! However, this session has maintained a constant enthusiasm for every activity. They’ve blown away every instructor we have had the last two weeks because of their dedication. Olivia and Ella looked like professionals running around on the shore and climbing onto their boards. It was a treat just to watch them! After hours on the beach, we put up our wetsuits and headed onwards. We took the students to the thrift store where everyone got a fun outfit for our banquet dinner. Rosie, Sophie, Ella, and Olivia looked like Adam Sandler in their new clothes! Willy rocked a fez hat and Hayes seriously looked like a cowboy. Their new outfits were surely worthy of the red carpet. After a long time spent shopping, we headed over to Taqueria La Gallina for our banquet dinner. Man, it was good! We had tacos, burgers, fried, quesadillas, and anything you can imagine! What a treat for everyone to sit at dinner together one last time. After a long dinner, we moseyed over to our campsite to have some sparkling Martinelli’s and s’mores! We found a campfire and plenty of sparkling juice to feed an army. Ella had Sophie could hardly be pulled away from the warm fire! Afterwards, we went to bed to prepare for a busy airport day.

And now, as this last session boards their flights and heads home, we cannot help but feel grateful. This group gave us the most wonderful two weeks. Their ability to live in the moment and make the most of their experience has made a profound impact on us. We truly loved spending time with these kids. We are also incredibly grateful for the opportunity that Moondance and y’all have given us to lead here. Thank you to everyone who has made this summer possible for us, but more important for them. We have loved every moment with these kids.

Update from California!

July 24, 2024

Once upon a midnight dreary, while Cal 3A traversed the golden state all warm and cheery…

Jk, no poetry here folks! Last time we left you with a cliffhanger as we were leaving the mighty Yosemite and pointing our van towards the Nevada Border and Lake Tahoe. We’re reporting live here today to update y’all on all that we have done since then. Buckle up, because the only pace we’ve maintained is blistering!

Our arrival in Tahoe was glorious as we were greeted with sunny skies and warm weather. It truly looked like something out of a fairy tale, so we wasted no time setting up camp before going to explore the water. At this point the group was coming into its own as evidenced by our LODs, Willy and Olivia, and their attention to detail as they took charge and diligently delegated tasks to get everyone organized, leaving the three of us feeling very proud. However, after a relaxing afternoon came the evening’s adventure. You see, adventures don’t just come in the form of hikes and surfing…there are also adventures of the culinary variety. Henceforth, the students of Cal 3A will divide time as before SPAM and after SPAM. Yep, that’s right! For dinner our crew tried their hands at preparing and eating the camp classic which proved to be a resounding success. Knox might have even discovered a new favorite dish as he scarfed down an impressive 23 pieces! Talk about commitment! Later, after an excellent Moonup we all retired to our tents for some much needed rest before kayaking tomorrow.

The day’s surprises weren’t over though. At some point during the night, we heard movement outside of the tents and determined that an old friend of Moondance had come to welcome us to Tahoe: it was Mr. Bear! We were elated by his greeting and it left us feeling even more excited to hit the water.

When morning arrived, everyone hopped out of their tents and prepared for the day of kayaking ahead. We paired up the kids into groups of two and it made us proud to see their teamwork. Each group paddled in sync, allowing them to move at a blistering speed and leave whitewater in their wake. But because this group has become full blown adventurers, we tried our hand at hiking the Basalt Overlook and we’re rewarded with perhaps the coolest view from the entire trip.

Our final day in Tahoe saw us embarking on a Paddleboarding excursion, an activity that has proven itself as a crowd pleaser. As soon as we hit the water, the boys wasted no time hoisting the Black Flag. Westy and Cole commanded a legion of pirates and before long they had commandeered nearly all 15 paddle boards. Piracy is tiring, however, and eventually we had worked up a hankering for a treat, so we made our way to get ice cream before hitting the road.

Our arrival to our rafting destination gave us the gift of a chill day, but let’s be real, this is Moondance: no chill days here. We enjoyed a slow morning before us three leaders enacted our master plan. Under the guise of a bonus day of rafting, we loaded up the van and set off to explore an American icon. Authenticity was of the utmost importance in this operation, however, so we needed to keep up appearances. We passed out liquid IVs and demanded hydration. We truly believe that we had the kids convinced, so I would like you to take a minute and close your eyes and imagine their surprise when we arrived not at rafting, but instead, at In-N-Out Burger! Cheers erupted from throughout the van and the excitement was contagious. After our well-deserved feast, Mathes, a newcomer to the In-N-Out experience, cited it as the best burger she’d ever had!

The day’s good eats were far from over, though. That night saw us partaking in a heated competition that would determine who was Cal 3A’s IRON CHEF. The group was divided into two teams and each effort was spearheaded by Hayes and Halsay respectively as they showed off their grilling skills. On the menu was homemade street tacos and steak fried rice. Both dishes were out of this world, but in a competition as cutthroat as iron chef, there can only be one winner. In the end, the street tacos proved victorious.

The next day arrived after much anticipation. Not only was it our first day of rafting, it was also Ella’s birthday!!!! We gorged ourselves on anything but a balanced breakfast before heading out to the river. When we met up with our raft guides, their expertise and calm demeanor put everyone at ease ahead of an activity that can be daunting. After a quick safety demonstration we hit the river. Rosie and Ellie absolutely killed it! They proved to be naturals; with their help on George’s raft the group was able to attack the strong rapids. On Catharine and Chad’s raft, Sophie was a fun and dynamic member. She held a steady position in front, laughing and jumping in the water whenever he had the chance. We stopped and had lunch on the river. Our guides proved one can be both a master of the current and a great cook! After lunch, we finished the upper fork and returned to camp. At camp, we had a three course dinner made by our guides. They made homemade dip with veggies and crackers, pasta with different sauces, chicken, steak, salad, AND dessert! We were stuffed. It was early night after a long day on the river.

The next day came early, and after yet another great meal from the raft guides we were ready to go! The upper leg of the America River offered more intense rapids than we’d seen the day before. We were particularly anxious for our title bout against the notorious Class 3: Troublemaker. With precise paddle strokes and deft movements we came out victorious. Mathes helped her group take on the challenge. Eventually, arrived at Point Reyes in the Bay Area. It is easy to say we were exhausted after a crazy last few days. The chill of the coast was a shock compared to the hot temperatures we experienced further inland. We set up camp and then settled down for yet another Iron Chef face off: this time it was burgers vs chicken parm! We have some talented chefs in our crew.

This trip has flown by and it’s so bittersweet.

Climbing our Way through California!

July 17, 2024

Howdy Folks! Although we have been in California for over a month there is still nothing more exciting than a new session! Session 3 is no exception! Airport day brought a new wave of excitement. We waited anxiously at SFO for our 12 new best friends to arrive. Once everyone arrived, we knew we were going to have the most special two weeks. And we were not wrong!

Upon leaving SFO, we headed over to Half Moon Bay for the night. The cool air was a relief from the summer heat. It is only natural for the students to have butterflies the first day, but our first night was such a sweet start to the trip. We arrived at our campsite and were met with several new friends. There were baby goats and chickens! Talk about cute! Mathes loved petting them! We never saw the smile on her face leave. After setting up our tents, everyone spent some time together. Rosie fit right in immediately, her sweet personality is easy to love. For dinner, we had to go with the Moondance classic: PIZZA! We picked up from our favorite local spot called Veranazzo’s. Everyone immediately dug in and we wiped those boxes clean! After dinner, we had a campfire and we all sat around together. We had so much fun talking to Westy and Cole. They were hilarious! Being around them felt like talking to old friends from home. We went to bed that night with anticipation for what session 3 would bring.

And then… It was sweet Sophie’s birthday! What a treat that we get to celebrate her birthday together in California! Our first full day together would bring a morning surf lesson and a drive to Yosemite. We had a quick breakfast of cereal and breakfast sausage. All of our kids were excited about surfing. In particular, Sophie was super excited to learn how to master the waves. Halsey was super attentive and anxious to learn from the surf instructors. We were super impressed at how awesome everyone has performed during the activities! After a few hours in the water, we gathered around to have some cake in honor of Sophie’s special day. It was delicious!!! Eating cake while also admiring the California coast was something special. We truly hope she felt special today! After our celebration, we had to hit the road for the long drive to Yosemite. The drive went by super fast. Willy and Halsey read during the drive and it was hard to pull them away from their books. Westy, as always, was engaging the whole group. He was funny and talkative. Before we knew it we were at our Yosemite camp site! We made a camping classic of hotdogs for dinner. Everyone loved it!

Hello Saturday! Saturday came with a packed agenda! We had two awesome hikes planned for the group. We started off the morning with oatmeal, eggs, and cereal. The first was at Horseshoe Lake. We walked around the lake together and found a lunch spot right on the water. We enjoyed watching all the group swim and play together. Everyone got so close so fast. Olivia and Rosie showed no hesitation jumping in. After a few hours at Horseshoe, we headed over to the Dog Lake Trail. We love this hike because although it is challenging, the view and the lake are incredibly rewarding. Cole charged in the front with George and led the group. We were speedy and before we knew it we were at the lake! We spent some time together there; Hayes really enjoyed the lake and it took some convincing to leave! Once back at our campsite we treated ourselves to some mac n cheese, and boy it was good! Everyone wanted seconds. We ended our active day with some s’mores around the campfire. It really is special to sit around the fire together and talk. Halsey and Willy loved the campfire! Tired, but with full hearts, we went to bed.

Sunday marked our first day of climbing. We woke up early to prepare for our busy day. We had a quick bite of oatmeal, fruit, and cereal before hitting the road. However, we were blessed with a little bit of liquid sunshine! Rain! What a relief from the California heat! We waited a little for the rain to leave. Ella passed the time by making the other girls laugh. Before we knew it, the rain was gone. We harnessed up and headed over to the rock wall. Although climbing can be technical and sometimes very difficult, our group was not deterred! Every student killed rock climbing! They were so engaged and up for anything the climbing instructors brought forward. Hayes up the wall before we could even blink. Seriously, we turned away for a split second and Hayes was at the top. Ella was also a rockstar! It was so cool to look up and see her waving down at us! We are so proud of our awesome students. After hours of climbing, we knew we needed a treat. Naturally, that meant some much needed ice-cream. We went to a local shop called Hugs. A smile never left sweet Ellie’s face! We decided to walk around together before heading back to our campsite. Once at our campsite, we relaxed for a while before it was time to make dinner. The girls enjoyed sitting together in their ENOs. Mathes has especially gotten close with everyone. For dinner that night we had carne asada quesadillas. What a feast! Knox seriously stepped up and offered to help. He has never failed to show his appreciation and we just have loved getting to know him. Halsey said it was his favorite dinner he’s ever had! We’ve been so busy it’s nice to have something filling.

Monday brought on our second day of climbing. The climbing guides introduced a new rock wall that was more difficult than the previous day. Our group embraced the challenge and did awesome! The guides were so impressed that they found a new rock wall that no other group of ours had done! Talk about cool! We climbed the new wall all morning and into the afternoon before we set out to tackle another challenge: a hike up the Lembert Dome.

Lembert Dome is quite formidable as it requires a trek up a steep incline if you want to reach the top and enjoy the views. Our crew didn’t bat an eye when facing down this challenging hike and resolved to push up the hill at a blistering speed. It was incredible to see how the group encouraged each other and fed off of one another’s energy in order to persevere. After much huffing and puffing we made it to the top with tired lungs and sore legs, however, Cal 3A is anything but complacent. The boys immediately dropped and began doing push ups atop the granite, and it was epic! They have internalized the David Goggins mindset all trip and have begun calling themselves the Northern California Special Forces Unit. We are excited to see how our platoon challenges themselves in the coming days as we set out for Lake Tahoe!

Even though it has only been a few short days, we already feel like a family and we cannot thank you enough for sharing your children with us this summer.

With warm regards,

George, Chad, Catharine

Moondance has been fun and just as y’all said it would be. We started at this cool ranch with a really nice dude hosting us there. That’s where our group really got to know each other and we played a game of wiffle ball on a wiffle ball field. Then we went to Yosemite and went on hikes and it was really fun. George’s California squad each did 115 pushups on top of a mountain. We are now at Lake Tahoe and having the greatest time, love y’all see you when I get home.
