Costa Rica offers the adventurous traveler a stimulating cross-cultural experience in a radiant tropical paradise. On this enlightening adventure, explore the coast, warm rivers, volcanic mountain ranges, and rainforests. Receive the indispensable education that only international travel and cultural exchange can deliver.
Backpacking, Canopy Tour and Homestay – Cordillera Mountains
After your group’s arrival into San Jose, you travel just outside the city to get a taste of the lush rainforest by zip lining through the canopy high above the sights and sounds of San Jose. Next you will head to the central highlands region of Costa Rica to begin your backpacking section in the Cordillera Mountains. Throughout this fascinating region, with wildlife as diverse as its scenery, you will hike through the country’s highest mountains, be intrigued by brilliant waterfalls, delicate orchids, limestone caves, rare birds, and immerse yourself in the Costa Rican culture by living with families settled deep in the rainforest. Learn the basics of technical climbing by climbing up massive rainforest trees and repelling down waterfalls. Practice your Spanish while helping prepare traditional foods or by joining in on local customs such as using a sweat lodge or playing soccer.
Surfing - Tamarindo & Playa Hermosa
Take the scenic drive west all the way to the Pacific where you will spend a few days having fun in the sun on the famous beaches of Tamarindo and Playa Hermosa. In these warm waters you will learn safe surfing techniques and how to read ocean conditions. After paddling into the surf and catching big waves, you will inevitably begin to realize why Costa Rica is an international surfing destination.
Community Service - Protect the bio-diversity of Costa Rica
Having spent a week with the wonderful Fonseca family we will have developed a pretty deep understanding of the Costa Rican culture – and now is the time to give back. We are going to head east to the Caribbean Coast for service project. The Leatherback Sea Turtle is a critically endangered species and our group, teamed up with a program called Ecology Project International will spend the week working to protect the turtles and their nesting areas. We will cruise up and down the Caribbean shorelines looking for Sea Turtle nesting areas. Working alongside locals will give us a truly unique experience.
We will also oversee the reforestation project in Terciopelo as we plant trees to ensure the continuation of the natural beauty in Costa Rica. Rewarded for our efforts with community service certificates, we will wash our hands and reflect on the importance of increasing the longevity of nature in the region, and we will fish for tilapia and feast on our catches of the day! After a long day of community service and fishing, we will Moonup and get a good night’s sleep under the Costa Rican stars. We will awake to find ourselves ambassadors of our own language as we teach english to the locals of El Tigre.
Whitewater rafting - Pacuare and Reventazon Rivers
After a week of volunteer work and cultural immersion, psyche yourself up for an adrenalin-filled few days on two of the most famous rivers running through Costa Rica.
Plunge into the warm waters of both the Pacuare and the Reventazon rivers as you raft the class III-IV rapids through dramatically carved out canyons.
