Update, 7/15
Emily called to check in on the way to the San Juans. On the short ride from Sea-Tac airport to the San Juans the group had already managed to have plenty of laughs. They will be sea kayaking for the next couple of days and then on to start the backpacking section up in the Cascades. We look forward to posting their update as soon as we get it.
Update 7/19/03
We spoke to Taylor today as the group finished up a great few days in the San Juan Islands. Highlights thus far include excellent backcountry cuisine, a circumnavigation of Shaw Island, and a total distance covered of over 25 miles total. A few nights camping on the beach and some phenomenal sunsets have also been favorites. Patton enjoyed playing the didgeridoo and continues to inform the group on the constellations. Grace feels more confident after completing the challenging sea kayaking section and really enjoyed exploring the tidal pools. Bill, complete with his mullet, was the group's 1st Leader of the Day and did a great job. He is keeping the group laughing. Anna did a great job kayaking and learning how to steer the boat. She finished strong. Hailey is a true helper of the group and thoroughly enjoyed herself as she brought smiles to the entire group. Phil is having a blast sleeping outside at night, exploring the tidal pools and making new friends. Maggie is really challenging herself and is an inspiration to the group. Charlie had a great day playing "blob tag" on the water and he is learning a lot through his curious nature. He is really enjoying himself. Martha Burton is continuing to challenge herself on this trip and although she is out of her comfort zone- she is having a great time with the group.
Backpacking update, 7/27/03
Taylor just called to check in with us and he sounded awesome! It was a little hard to hear him because there was so much laughter in the background from the group. All of the members were able to summit Desolation peak and not only that but at sunrise! I'm sure they took advantage of some breathtaking views with their new friends. Here's the update.
Anna: Persevered through first time blisters and was a trooper the whole way. Taylor said she is a true joy to be around.
Hailey: Very encouraging, helped everyone in the group make it to the summit before the sunrise in order to capture the moment.
Martha Burton: Great addition to the group, truly taking advantage of her experience and her time in the backcountry.
Bill: Group Allstar! Huge help to everyone in the group as he is constantly lending a helping hand. Sounds like it was a bit chilly on that summit and Bill was the "human blanket" for the group.
Charlie: Claims that backpacking was his favorite part of the trip thus far. He was always excited for the next adventure.
Patton: Serves as the group comedian. He is a passive leader that helps with group decisions. Sounds like whenever someone is down Patton is there to cheer them up.
Maggie: Taylor described her as "the number one encouragement of the group." She was active in making sure everyone made it to the top of the mountain.
Grace: Received the most improved award from the group. She sounds like she is enjoying the challenges of the outdoors and loves her group and the time spent with them.
Phil: Never complains and very helpful in the kitchen. Apparently he resembled a fireman up on the mountain with his bright orange gaiters and jacket. Very encouraging team member and loves a good laugh.
We look forward to hearing from the group soon. Taylor and Emily are doing great as well and it sounds like the group is doing awesome! More to come soon.
