James has been a teacher of ninth and tenth graders at The Cottage School in Atlanta. Between teaching English, kayaking, and organic gardening and coaching soccer and baseball, James still finds enough energy and time to be an active member of Sierra Club’s Georgia Chapter Executive Committee. Growing up on St. Simon’s Island, GA, James explored the Georgia coastline and developed an interest in the history of the region and in outdoor pursuits. James was part of Sea Island’s Junior Staff, a summer teen program that afforded him the opportunity to teach kayaking and lead nature walks on Georgia’s barrier islands. While in school at the University of Georgia, James paddled the familiar landscape of Southeast Georgia on multiple trips to Cumberland Island, biked the trails in and around Athens, rafted the Ocoee River, hiked in the Smokies whenever he got the chance, and explored Costa Rica and Austria by foot and in boat.
